This has always been my most favorite revolver from the 1800's. The concept is so badass and it looks cool and unique as well. I'd love to see a newer version of the LeMat that fixes the design flaws, updated for newer cased rounds etc but retains it's appearance and the hammer switch for the shotgun. The idea of having a 42.-44. caliber with a 20 gauge shotgun ready to go in one pistol is almost fantasy haha. Just enthralled with this piece of history and the overall ingenuity of this and other firearms back then and even today.
@brucemorrison21322 жыл бұрын
The LeMat comes only in.44, for a good reason. First, because it is so closely made exactly like originals, scammers can "antique" it to look 150 years old, and fraudulently sell it as an original for $15,000 to $35,000 ! (But the Pietta LeMat in 2022 only costs $1,300 ! ) But if it is .44 caliber, you know it is a replica ! Secondly, reenactors and shootists are more used to .44 and .36 cal. and .42 would be very difficult to get lead round balls in that cal., if not actually impossible).

That would be awesome and I would totally buy one... Unfortunately, the center shotgun barrel would have to remain black powder. If it took normal shells, It would be considered an "AOW" (any other weapon) by the ATF and require a $5 tax stamp and a possible year long wait.... TL;DR US federal gun laws suck dick...
@FlipTheAngryAsian10 жыл бұрын
if it was in 410 it wouldnt lol
@YoderTexas10 жыл бұрын
FlipTheAngryAsian I believe that it would actually have to be chambered for 45 long Colt and have a rifled barrel. That would still classify it as pistol round, yet a 410 shell just happens to fit also.
@1guyin1010 жыл бұрын
YoderTexas That is correct. The .410 handguns all have some rifling - in many cases only 1/2 inch or so - to avoid falling into a controlled category. Most of them would probably be better shotguns if they were not rifled, but the rules are what they are.
@cem126810 жыл бұрын
i like the idea a lot too. maybe because i'm a fan of Deckard's double barreled revolver in "Blade Runner". to get past the ATF regs the cylinder barrel could chamber a specialty cartridge like the 12 G. Tazer round or some other "non-lethal" specialty round. the original Thunder 5 was heavily mocked and now the Taurus and S&W 410/45 colt are one of the hottest ticket items in the gun world. thank video games, people like odd firearms these days. i could see this as a top break with an ambidextrous lever to change from cylinder to bore.

Replica's do, originals don't
@Grimmwoldds5 жыл бұрын
LeMat's method of chamber/barrel alignment precluded a safety notch. It does have a half-cock position for the hammer, but I don't know exactly what happens when you pull the trigger at half-cock(every reference I've seen had it as an aid to disassembly rather than an actual carry safety).
@LoremasterYnTaris4 жыл бұрын
@@Grimmwoldds I've never personally handled a LeMat, but from my understanding of how other revolvers of the period were built (which I have handled), pulling the trigger on half cock would do absolutely nothing. You wouldn't even be able to pull the trigger back. There's a catch in place that makes it so the hammer has to be either fully up or fully down.
@luger_Mann3 жыл бұрын
@@LoremasterYnTaris that would be correct the LeMats trigger wouldn’t even move.

YES ! There IS a safety built in. There are beefy "walls" between every firing nipple. The hammer face is inset to fit over these lugs perfectly, so the hammer is resting there and NOT on a loaded and capped chamber, thus you can load and cap all 10 nipples in total safety !

There was a missed opportunity to introduce the LeMat revolver in rdr2 single player. Imagine if the gun you pick up at the slaver guys from Rhodes old house was a LeMat. I am a little miffed that they used a beat up flintlock pistol, they even said revolver!

What about loading that 20 gauge barrel with a single ball? I figure a .60 caliber ball would be devastating at close range.

Ouch
@wynfrithnichtwo84235 жыл бұрын
chapiit08 I would not be surprised if folks who had these in their time used slugs out of the shotgun barrel, but buck & ball would also have been another good choice because at close range both loadings would be lethal.

It's interesting you pointed out in the ball seating, the lead ring proving a tight seal. There are quite a few very popular sites here on KZbin that claim it is vital to grease the front chamber to stop chain fires. Your explanation makes perfect sense to me. The caps are most definitely the weak link in any cap and ball gun, chain fire wise!

What's not being said here Is that the Lemat didn't use a round ball projectile. The. 44 caliber projectile it used looked like a small plumb bob. It was conical tapering to the base then had a small pedestal end. The .44 caliber ball round was used as an expedient substitute because there were no molds for the Lemats regular bullit or the molds for them where extremely limited.
@brucemorrison21322 жыл бұрын
You are totally ignorant. It DID use round balls ! Only in .42 caliber !

A warning from History! Loading black powder on wooden tables. An aside that might intrest you. In the 1850's the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich South London was the British Militarys main supplier of cartridges. The cartridges were made in Building 17 (Which suprisingly still exists) Boys were used to fill and wrap the cartridges sitting at long wooden benches, with some adults to supervise. Over time spilt powder got into the grain of wood , and despite saftey precautions, occasionally the powder would ignite and run along the lines of spilt powder. On one occasion this happned the blast was so bad the workers fled the building. At the end of the building there were large double doors so evacutaion should have worked, except, outside the doors on the walls were mounted lamps either side. This prevented the doors opening flat agaianst the walls and in the ensuing panic a number of men and boys were crushed and killed in the bottle neck caused. The result was the first public enquiry into an industrial accident in UK.
