Paper cartridges were tapered. Also they rarely used balls. They used conical bullets that had a stepped down base for easier chambering.
@brucemorrison21322 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily true , often the paper cartridges held Round balls , so some had round balls, some held conical bullets. Depends on which armoury made the rounds.

I really like this firearm. There's something about it that sets it apart from other BP firearms of that era. The 9 shots are great and so is the shotgun capability. If they had corrected the weak lever this might have been better received at the time. If they did away with the shotgun feature and just made it a 9 shot revolver it would have become smaller and would have allowed them to put a more standard type of stronger lever mechanism. Definitely a cool firearm.
@bassedtaz Жыл бұрын
I don't think you could retain the 9 shot design whilst removing the shotgun and/or shrinking the overall cylinder diameter, the two kinda go hand in hand and rely on each other which is why its cool and not gimmicky. Think of the geometry of 9 circles in a circle, it can only get so small before you have insufficient wall thickness. And that smallest possible circle, of 9 circles, leaves a mandatory large area in the centre for the shotgun bore. In other words, if you want 9 chambers, you may as well have a big bore as your spindle. I agree the lever is a big issue
@henerymag11 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a ring of lead and it is normal if the ball is the correct size. It keeps the chamber sealed tightly to prevent a chainfire. Lube is also applied on top of the ball, mostly to soften the fouling from the previous shot.

Jeb Stuart of the confederate army was the most popular supporter of the LeMat pistol. The theory was each cavalryman would be armed with at least two of these and they could ride fast and engage the enemy at close range then have two multiple shot pistols and then two shotgun blasts before going to the saber. up to this time mounted cavalry usually fought dismounted with rifles or advanced with sabers to break up infantry lines or prevent flanking of main forces by enemy infantry. The idea of armed fighting from horseback was in its infancy at this time. The Lemat although seemingly good in theory but not as good in reality helped lay the foundation for mounted cavalry tactics to come. A great peace of history. Thanks for the video.

Wow, to be able to potentially fire 10 rounds (one of which being a shotgun loading) from a pistol without a reload, all before 1870. That's pretty impressive! If I was a cowboy back in the day, and if the friggin thing didn't have such a flimsy loading lever, that'd probably be my iron of choice :P Of course you always leave one chamber empty but still, 8 pistol rounds and a shotgun round? I'm down! I wonder how much it weighed. 3lb?

That may be because Mike Beliveau is OVERLOADING Chambers. Dixie Gun Works recommends only 22 grains FFFg black powder in pistol chambers. And 30 grains FFg blackpowder in the shot barrel. He's loading 30 grains in each chamber, and 60 gr in the shotgun barrel ! TWICE THE RECOMMENDED LOAD ! I've shot my LeMat with 25 gr in the chambers, and 40gr in the shot barrel ~ with no loading lever flying a round lose !

@brucemorrison21322 жыл бұрын
Not that I'm aware of. And most likely never will. As arms manufacturers are in business to make money, and the tooling up to make some would be cost prohibitive, plus cost of ammo. Not several thousand customers lining up anxious to buy one, so no point to that. Back in that time there were a few pinfire cartridge LeMats made but very few made it to America before the war ended. There were a few hundred LeMat percussion revolver-carbines made for the war, and a few hundred metal pin-fire cartridge revolver -carbines also. After the war a few thousand center-fire cartridge LeMat revolver-carbines were made for sales to individuals.

On the gun "out of the box", there are machining burrs in the hole of the lever, where the rammer screw is sliding in it. This does the sliding even harder when ramming a ball. The rammer is simpling going out of his guide as you can see in the video. Without these burrs, the rammer is sliding perfectly straight. The main screw of the lever though needs some loctite for staying in place. Those difficulties solved, the lever works "how it should be"...

Pretty sure the theory of this design is that the shotgun works as a "flinch" weapon, i.e. a weapon that has a low likelihood of killing but which will make the target flinch, dodge or otherwise delay their own attack. Primary tactic for this pistol was to draw it immediately upon contact, fire in the general direction of the target (from bouncing horseback) hoping a pellet or two will strike the target (or his horse) and cause a few seconds delay that gives the LeMat wielder time to make an aimed shot with the revolver. Because of the visually closed, rough terrain in which much of the Civil War was fought, cavalry encounters quite often opened when two units blundered into in each at ranges under 50ft(~17m). The first to get shots off could get a winning advantage. The shotgun would have also made a superior weapon for euthanizing horses, a very common need at the time as horses where wounded at about three time the rate of their riders... and the horses were lucky that the vets of the time didn't try to save them the same way they tried to save humans ("He's gunshot, amputate the limb! But Dr. he's shot in the head." or "Only prissy Austrians wash their hands or surgical tools!") Once an animal could no longer move itself, they were put down. A broad shattering of the skull from a shotgun, driving pellets and shards inward over a relatively broad area, kills a horse quicker and more surely than trying to poke a single bullet hole into their relatively small brains.

There is an error in his discription of the cylinder that others down comment may have caught. The hand does not lock the cylinder in place. Note the pin holes in the back of the cylinder. There is a pin in the frame at about the 7 o'clock position (when looked at from the front of the weapon) that engages the cylinder when the hammer is in the full cocked positon. This pin was a weak point in the mechanism and the last 100 pistols for the Confederacy had an improved design (the war ended before they could be delivered). The hand engagement ramps in the cylinder has slots cut at the bottom of the ramp for a locating blade located below the cylinder rotating hand. The late pistol cylinders are not compatible with the early type. Note that the reproduction pistol has the early type pin lock-up for the cylinder.

is the reason that the shotgun bore is a 20 gauge instead of a 16 because the pistol shots are 44 instead of 42 and it keeps the overall cylinder smaller and maybe closer to the original size

Muzzle loading pistols, black-powder , can still be owned . Including revolvers. The shotgun barrel on the LeMat may create a problem for that model. However standard cap and ball , not cartridge, revolvers are fine unless Scotland has some variations from England. You do need to be licensed and a club member unless you own a hell of a lot of land or have your own certified range. You can also shoot cartridge revolvers if they have an elongated barrel and a wrist brace hard-fixed.

For any of you Call of Duty players, this is included in Advanced Warfare as the 'M1 Irons', which is another antique firearm reproduction made by Atlas Corp. In the game, it fires bullets instead, has a six round cylinder, is loaded with a swing-out cylinder and speed loader, is single-action, and due to Exo-skeleton enhancements to soldiers, the action can be cycled at superhuman speeds and can allow fire up to six hundred and twenty five rounds per minute. It will kill in two hits at close range, and will decrease to four shots at long distances. It is extremely accurate as well. The player can also dual wield them at a heavy fire rate cost, and among other upgrades available are an oddly-mounted red dot sight or ACOG scope, laser sight, advanced barrel rifling, a quickdraw pistol grip, an underheld knife and a parabolic microphone. Unfortunately, due to its revolver nature, a silencer can't be put on it. It is also available in some 'Exo zombies' maps, where it can, like reality, be upgraded to hold nine rounds in a cylinder.

Just got mine and those were the two glaring things i need to fix before i can use it. Hope you read this and appreciate any assistance.

would a cartridge conversion be possible for this revolver? I mean it would be nice if Uberti or Pietta made a cartridge version of this pistol. I imagine it would be quite pricey but I would definitely buy it.

Did the plunger for the shotgun come out? I could see the level flopping around on the last couple of shots.
@duelist195412 жыл бұрын
That would not be possible with a working shotgun barrel as the arbor.

Can you fire 8 shots from the pistol cylinder and still have the shotgun charge remain in place? Wondering if that overshot card could hold in the shot charge during the recoil of all the other shots.
@californiacowboy39367 жыл бұрын
Terrill Williams if you pack it tight enough it will hold throughout the recoil

wow what an amazing weapon! quick question, bqck when these were used did they change the type of gun powder like you did for tye shot barrel and for the cylinder itself? or would they just use the same type of powder. also how much do these cost to shoot? let alone own one, i heard you say they only made 3000 models. great video

I'm new to Black Powder.What is the difference between the two powder types you noted?Can one be used for both the balls and the shotgun,albeit a little less effective for one or the other?Thank You
@duelist19548 жыл бұрын
+Bowtie41 Sure, you could use the 3Fg for both. 3Fg isn't as consistent with big powder columns, but that's not a real issue with a snub nosed shotgun
@Bowtie418 жыл бұрын
+duelist1954 Thanks for the reply!What do you mean by inconsistant?Does one burn faster/hotter than the other,or have more power?Thanks.
@duelist19548 жыл бұрын
+Bowtie41 This is a more complicated subject than I care to explain here. You should get a good book on black powder shooting. In a nutshell the higher he number, ie: 3Fg vs 2Fg, the finer the grains of powder are. Finer grains burn faster, and so, if used properly, provide faster velocity than coarser grains. But, in a big powder column, finer grains pack so tightly that they slow the propagation of flame through the powder column. That increases pressure without increasing velocity. So, using 3Fg powder in big charges can give high pressures and inconsistent velocity.
@Bowtie418 жыл бұрын
+duelist1954 That is actually quite clear to me.Too dense and a tall column means not enough O2,among other factors.Thank You!

hi mike, nice vid, do you go farther than taking the barrel and cylinder off to clean the lemat?

If that loading level wasnt so floppy after shooting, I would really want one of these. The pistol looks really interesting.

Damn good Information ! I've been intrigued by the LeMat for years . I knew it was unreliable but still a grand thought by the inventor ! I'll bet old paul would love to know that 149 yrs. after his death , his gun is still a topic of discussion and highly sought after !
@brucemorrison21322 жыл бұрын
That's another mistake Beliveau makes. It was NOT unreliable ! I believe the flapping loading lever was caused by OVER-LOADING the cylinder and/or shotgun barrel ! I only load mine with 22 to 25 grains of FFFg in the chambers ad 30-40 gr FFg in the 16 gauge barrel ~ yes, my Pietta copy of the LeMat has a 16 ga shotgun barrel, and I don't get loading lever flopping ! Also, he is incorrect on the inventor's name. New Orleans Dr. Jean Alexandre Francois LeMat was the inventor, (NO Paul in his name!). Also I believe Girard & Sons of Paris ,France made 3,600-4,000 LeMats, not just 3,000.

Some one commented it was too bad no Metal-cartridge LeMats were made. Actually, there were many made, in metal pin-fire cartridges, many in even centerfire metal cartridges, but not until the war's end, and then shipped to America for individual civilian sales ~ even a few hundred shoulder-stocked ,long barreled LeMat percussion carbines arrived in 1864-65, and metal pinfire cartridge carbines and metal centerfire carbines arrived in the 1866-1870 period.

I wonder if the revolver portion would've loaded easier and faster if .451 balls had been used rather than .454 balls? I noticed quite a large ring of lead being cut off as the .454 ball was rammed down. 3/1000ths of an inch may not seem like much, but it may be enough.

I notes that no one coment on how to keep the caps on. I have a walker colt reproduction and I have found that a little super glue keeps the caps from falling off when you are fireing.
