Seeing Oxford UTD mentioned reminded me of when the Mighty Liverpool signed John Aldrige from them to replace Ian Rush. I think they were in the 3rd Division then. He was a great stiker in the 1st division. These days, the top division teams wouldn't even think of a 3rd Division team to buy a a player from.

OK so I did a bit of research. There are quite a few early FA cup winners who no longer exist such as Clapham Rovers and some that play in non league or amateur leagues like Old Etonians. Spurs won their first FA Cup final when still a non-league club and are the only team to do so.

The founding members of The Conference or to be precise the Alliance Premier League 1979-80 were: AP Leamington, Altrincham, Bangor City, Barnet, Barrow, Bath City, Boston UTD, Gravesend and Northfleet, Kettering Town, Maidstone UTD, Northwich Victoria, Nuneaton Borough, Redditch UTD, Scarborough, Stafford Rangers, Telford UTD, Wealdstone, Weymouth, Worcester City, Yeovil Town. Altrincham finished as champions but there was no promotion to the Football League at the time, and Redditch finished bottom of the league and were the only club to be relegated to level 6.
