ANTIQUE SHOW, AT LAST! | SHOP & SCOUT PETOSKEY VINTAGE
It’s been a long dry spell, but antique shows with good safety protocols are being allowed in some more rural parts of the country! Petoskey, Michigan is a vacation paradise whose bi-annual show is a welcome sight for resellers and collectors whose options to enjoy the wonderful in-person experience of the vintage world have been limited.
This show is new to me, and I explore the barns and indoor venues very thoroughly in this episode! Dealers who’ve been idled since March bring a bevy of new finds…modernist chrome lamps and skyline paintings to 1920s Uncle Sam outfits and outboard boat motors.
The diversity and quality of this show really impress me as I take it in for the first time. Huge displays of Victorian Vaseline (uranium glass), mint-in-box Buddy L trucks from the 1960s, California Plein Air art and a stack of electric advertising clocks are on display. Print dealers offering pro-and-anti war posters, early botanicals and Native American depictions offer great variety. From robot fish to giant spectacles, this show has things I’ve never seen anywhere else!
My pass through takes me through a gallery of the last two centuries of human development and production…whether wicker furniture or Danish modern are your gig, you’ll likely find something to enjoy in this montage of valuable vintage and amazing antiques. We’ll look for names, styles and yes, prices that educate me about some new old things, and hopefully teach and tantalize you as well.
Here are some more of the items we see along the way in this tour:
Political memorabilia, movie posters, street signs, foundry molds, oak pew, original paintings, Judaica wall cloth, advertising signs, canes, African chairs, dovetailed crates, Donald Duck, indian baskets, spongeware, Buick uniform, fur coat, psychedelic bikini, Nylint, Studebaker Lark, Seeburg jukebox, Danish modern chairs, quilts, creels, Wavecrest/Nakara/Kelva, overshot glass, Fenton cranberry, scenic lamp, corn casserole, Hitchcock furniture, primitive and folk furniture, fish decoys, Manhattan glass, wicker furniture, Hudson’s Bay blankets, Whiting and Davis purses, etc.

Let’s hope this new generation of “resellers” coming out on KZbin will assume this position as the new antique dealers of tomorrow... I call myself vintage and antique (glass and ceramic) dealer. I’m very niche. But I will make an exception to some textiles, tapestry and MCM lights... it is a pleasure to watch you George.

Hiya George, thank you for the tour, so many beautiful things! It’s hard dating wicker due to its 70s revival, those were stunning pieces! I’ve got a few, one I got at a “junk” shop I really think is Victorian but was updated in the 70s, afraid to try & restore- otoh want it out, no room anymore! Loved the arts & crafts lamp so pretty, as was too much to mention! I hope we see your booth in the next video! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️

Funny, I always thought something printed on a poster that was 57/317, meant the 57th print out of a total of 317 printed, so, for example, if you purchased the very first one, the 1/317, you had the most valuable one.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 2 жыл бұрын
That's true on limited edition prints, but on movie posters it means the original release was 1957

Soon soon I think I'll be able to join..just so grateful to have you and your videos..the caring about the history and treasures and armchair travel of fantastic regions..all the different ways people do this hobby and business and way you do it so wonderful....been an uptight time and it is such a wonderful thing and all the backlog of these I can watch....this gets me to old and new options and eclectic and just going through your grandma's closets feelings and a mix of joy..excitement and relax at same time..not pressure feeling of oh can't get that now and seeing there is always more and just the ups and downs..and things I love are not as big now and just the joy of it all. Thanks for being you and doing this...I just know I am going to find the huge grandma scarf I want sometime..stuff like that.. Loved the Donald duck..my dad and his only sibling had old cartoons that I think were slides mostly that you moved fast but the machine got hot quick they laughed until they cried as adults when we were junior high and grade school looking at them..Donald Duck was a main one. Great antique show! There were several items there that caught my interest. Behind the large glasses, there was a couple of chairs - a rocker and stationary chair - I really liked what I saw of those. I've always liked Buddy L, and those were some super-nice ones. Really liked the Studebaker promo car. Love the peach-blow! Mt. Washington made some really gorgeous pieces, and they can be quite expensive. That vaseline epergne, canoe and Arts and Crafts lamp were fantastic! Really enjoyed this tour! Thanks!!!

I believe the "wall hanging" you pointed out at 36:19 is a "parochet," the curtain that covers the Aron Kodesh (Torah Ark) which contains Torah scrolls in a synagogue. The parochet symbolizes the curtain that covered the Ark of the Covenant. Although this example is decorative, (as most are) it had a definite ceremonial, religious purpose. I am unsure whether I would use it as wall art. I really find your videos informative and fun to watch, as I, myself, am not attending any shows at this time.

Thank you so much for your explanation! My dear friend who was practicing Judaism died and I don't have the background to speak intelligently about it. That makes great sense and I'm not sure using it as it was shown is appropriate from your definition. I really love sharing information and learning, I appreciate your input very much

Oh, I’m dying to go to an antique show! Thanks for showing yours! If you hear of any in Florida let us know! I’m in the SWFL location and so far haven’t heard of any. In September there is suppose to be an outdoor one in Arcadia, FL! Hope they don’t reschedule it again. They usually have it every 3rd or 4th Saturday of every month but since March it’s been postponed till September.

I hope Arcadia can restart in September too! They're hoping to restart the West Palm Beach Antique Fest each month starting in November. I hope to sell there again in November at Renninger's Mt. Dora, then West Palm and St. Petersburg/Venice shows in January

I got burned early on, hastily buying (not inspecting) a huge political button collection at auction. It was a valuable lesson. I got an entire reproduction lot. The earlier buttons should have had markings maybe indicating a specific novelty manufacturer on them. Later ones, I discovered, usually had a microscopic mark on the edge indicating a union made stamp. I also didn’t pay attention to many items that should have had copyright dates, registry marks, numbering, etc. There are some great reproductions out there, missing those tiny marks that authenticate that they are the “real” deal. Live and learn!

Yes, there were a bunch made that have the date of original issue on the rims, which are all reproductions! I was fortunate to be clued in to that early in my career so avoided them

The Antique Nomad unfortunately, my nascent nomadic life is on hold. Due to health issues I’m at a higher risk for C-19 complications, I’m just not ready to get back out. ☹️ I have a Prius caRV. and depend a lot on state rest areas, truck stops, planet fitness and campgrounds. ✌🏽Hope I’ll be up to a nomadic community gathering on an Alabama mountain in October 🌻✌🏾✌🏽✌🏿🦋

So much interesting stuff! Being from Oregon, (not Portland) I enjoyed the Jantzen diving girl. They used to have an ad on the outfield wall of the stadium in Portland featuring a Jantzen diver. Always liked it.

George, when will you be back in Michigan? I think you told me you might be in Battlecreek-for a show?....and while my calendar has been pandemically empty, I would love to have something great to write iin my calendar that I would like to look forward to. And I would like to meet you. Also, I try to find you on eBay and when I type in ‘theantiquenomadebay’ I never get connected. So what am I doing wrong? Ant chance that you could put a direct connection to your e bays etc on your face book? This would make it so easy for those of us who didn’t even have TV in the 50s! Yeah, I am getting older and I really want an Antique Nomad t shirt as I travel a lot and fit the criteria! Just love all your videos!

Hello! I'd very much like to meet as well. I'm not certain when I will be able to get back to Grand Rapids, I expect to have family business there but my late grandfathers' wife is currently unable to have visitors because she's in a nursing home. I'm behind schedule on getting the t-shirts done, I keep having requests and just am slower than I used to be but hope to get that going soon! As for my eBay site, it's just TheAntiqueNomad...I currently only have books and sports cards listed but plan to do more soon, another thing I'm expecting to get going by the 23rd of this month

I bought a hand-carved African (?) chair at the thrift shop. I never knew it was a chair. I bought it for the carvings on it and thought it was a shelf. It's been put aside as we were trying to figure out how it attached to the wall (head slap!) Now I need to fall down the rabbit hole of these type of chairs. I think mine would be made for a child. Any other info or keywords you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.

I think maybe a Google image search would get you in the right direction. I don't know for certain, but the other pieces I've seen were from what is now the Congo. They may be from Yoruba culture but I'm not definite on that.

George why was it illegal to sell theold Native American canoes?
@TheAntiqueNomad

Apparently if they were made before white settlement, they're considered to have been confiscated from their rightful owners and are still tribal property.

Is it? The most recent info I saw said most of the groups most recently were in the Indianapolis area. People are often surprised where the KKK had influence in the past, the town in Kentucky where I am bought a piece of land and tried to form an encampment few miles outside about a decade ago--but the local people hated it and were able to find enough legal reasons to force it out.
