I'm pretty sure Earth was not largely habitable at the time, as the Earth we know today is different than what it is millions of years ago, which is probably why the Martians' didn't consider relocating to Earth, and only sent their basic lifeform in the form of microscopic bacteria in the slim hopes that it would thrive and develop.

Surely you'd apply a sealant from the inside of the spacecraft, not the outside. Inside is easier for starters, plus the sealant would be forced into the crack under pressure. If you do it on the outside then opposite happens.
