This was the first time ive connected batteries to this truck and attempted to start it. The truck has been sitting since 2004 according to the man I bought it from in the spring of 2019. Getting this truck running is the first step in the lengthy process of getting her restored and back on the road. make sure you hit the SUBSCRIBE button so you don't miss the future videos of me bringing her back to life!
Follow me on Instagram & Facebook @dieselcreek to see some of what i'm up to before it hits KZbin!

Its a series parallel switch. It does exactly that, For starting, it puts the 4 batteries in series, hense 24 volts. when engine starts and you release the key it switches back to 2 sets of batteries at 12 volts.We had a 58 Autocar . I started out driving on it in 1969 when I was 18. It had a 220 cummins with a R96 10 speed Fuller Roadranger Transmission and a 134C Rear End with 4-11 gears.Our 58 A Car was a GOOD Truck. I put a Turbo on it and made it a 262. Be careful how you jump those batteries, that switch is probably hard ti find if you short something out, John R.

John Rodino. You seem to know about the Cummins engines. Did they have the 220 in 1957 and the turbo version is as you say 262hp a rating I read about in the ''Overdrive'' magazine when I was a kid. There was a 275hp that I think was supercharged. I've read of a 195hp 6cyl not sure what block that was JRT or something. The 4.11 Rockwell ratio was good for it's time. My father had a 6-71 powered single drive COE truck that had an RTO910 with that diff ratio and did an easy 70 miles an hour, climbed grades good as well. Happy new year

That one Handel you called a shut down is the decompression ..pull it and as your cranking the engine it will spin free and then release it slowly and the engine will start ...may have to turn in the manual on the fuel soilod to get her to start ...dad had a old style 220 Cummins in a old dump truck I learned on it was a old white
@greenearth2009
@greenearth2009 4 жыл бұрын
Mr Hair is right about the decompression handle in your cab, use to help spin your engine over to start, release it should fire-up. First be sure clean fuel and filter, prime the system, see that fuel will flow-out at injector pump, any air in lines and it will not start. As mention by someone if you can tow it to start will be easy on your starter, have a friend help you, best to you. Make her run and have fun! After you have your truck running real good please come and start my old 1963 White cabover, been parked for over 30 years.

Yes I agree turn that engine over for a while to get oil pressure and get oil spread throughout the whole engine. Get rid of every drop of old fuel, new filters too. Be ready for the engine to run away, if this engine is anything like a GM with a stuck injector, just cut off the air and it will have to stop. You need a driver to start this truck, free the rear end, push it with the doser, much easier on the starter. That is what I would try first AFTER READING THE MANUALS MAYBE. I started out wrecching with out any kind of manuals but I soon found out to get the work done and stop playing around so as to move on to the next project like a cold beer. The manual was really a friend as it gave me time for beer sooner lol

Cummins injection system won't run away, unlike greenleakers, the throttle does not connect to the injectors. If it tries to run away from some other reason, pull and hold compression release.
@northmanlogging2769
@northmanlogging2769 4 жыл бұрын
Destroit diesels run away as a rule... thats why many of them have a runaway valve that cuts the air built in, Cummins while they can run away, its more likely from bad rings or valve seasl so it runs off crank case oil
@darrelfuhrman8217
@darrelfuhrman8217 4 жыл бұрын
northman logging Usually when a Cummins runs away, it is because the intake side oil slinger or seal went haywire in the turbocharger. Some times if an air compressor gets it’s air from the intake manifold, the air filter is really plugged, the Cummins will suck the oil from the compressor, doing a short run away.

@@darrelfuhrman8217 180-220 doesn't have turbo. This is last leftover from Rolls-Royce with ten head bolts per. Just a little before the 855 all new, all Cummins was introduced, up to 250, without turbo, I've seen a few old style at 300-320 with supercharger. Most notable difference, is the 14 bolt heads and the internal fuel rail.

It has a ‘Series - Parallel’ switch, not a transformer. There are many videos on this old system - put some good batteries in it, fix the terminals, repair or replace the S-P switch as needed (you can disassemble them and service the contacts in them). Then it might turn over if it isn’t seized 🤞

A few comments.. Positive ground, possibly, I know old Macks were. The starter..24 volt. The thing on the end of the battery box was a @4 volt/ 12 volt parallel switch. Feeds 24 volts to the starter, then shifts the rest of the system to 12 when the starter is disengaged. The pump is the classic Cummins "PT" pump, the lever is the throttle, fuel is controlled by the fuel solenoid on top of the pump. there is a little screw on top of the solenoid that is the Manuel override. turn it in and the unit is bypassed, but then if the engin runs, you can't turn it foff electrically, just a warning. Check that the engine is not locked up,, a big wrench on the front pully works, and I would recomend that you hook up a fresh supply to the pump, just to try to start is. 'Axe

My buddy bought an old Mt. Ranier plow truck. Don't know what kind of diesel it was, but it had a 10yd dump bed and 2000lbs of weight plates on the front end (no plow blade though :( ). Same type of electrical setup, but my buddy figured we could get it started with his minuscule VW Rabbit battery (brand new), and the battery from my old BMW wired together. We fought that thing for a week, but couldn't figure out the problem... It would just wind up the flywheel, and you could watch the oil pressure come up, and it would suck down some fuel that he was pre-loading the fuel filter with, but no fire. He was sitting on the fender messing with loading the filter again, and I was sitting in the cab, and I saw there was a shallow depression in the grass ahead, and I figured I'd freak him out a little and take the parking brake off and let it roll a few feet. So I put the giant lever in the cab that I thought was the parking brake down, and it didn't go anywhere to my dismay, but my buddy DID freak out: Him: "WHAT DID YOU JUST DO!?" Me: Took the parking brake off...?" Him: NO! That wasn't the parking brake... try the key now..." And when I hit the key, even with both batteries, it barely turned over. But it cranked fast enough to start, and we did a little dance. It was a compression release! So we left it for the day, saying I would return the next day to help him start it again to move it to his house, but when I called the next day, he said he had already moved it. And when I asked how he did it without both batteries, I asked if he had spent the money on a new, real battery (which was about $600). But he said nope, got her done with just the Rabbit battery! So I went over to see, and he wound it up on just the flywheel on that little battery, and when the oil pressure got up high enough, he just slammed that compression release closed, and that thing fired to life with some real authority! Another one of the cool things on that truck, it had some type of venetian blinds in front of the grill which wouldn't open until the truck was up to operating temp. You wouldn't want to stick your fingers in there when they closed though, you'd pull back stumps! Had a 10 speed Allison transmission too. Fun experience, but he didn't own it long, the city wouldn't let him park it on the street out front of his apartment. xD

Here's a story from back in my early days. One night my buddy invited me to make a short run in his (company truck) 1948 International dump truck pulling a pup trailer. He would haul clay to the brick plant about 40 miles away, continue on to a coal mine another 70 or 80 miles away, then dump at the power plant, then go do it again. Anyway, this was my first time in this very old, raggedy Corn Binder. It was dark, so I couldn't see much inside, but the tops of the twin sticks. As we rolled along, it looked for all the world like the gear levers were moving by themselves. I asked, "Have you got this smbitch trained or what?" He just smiled and said he did. For a long time I didn't know what the heck was going on with it. One day we made a daytime run in that truck. I caught him putting his other foot over and flopping the levers at the bottom of their sticks. "Course I did wonder about this guy, he could drive down a curvy road with one hand on a gal's lap, the other playing with the knee of a gal in the back seat. drink a beer and smoke a cigarette all while keeping the car right where it should be. I had to wonder what the hell he was using to steer with. I have more stories about this guy, but that's enough for now.

@@DieselCreek well there was a good reason I hung with him. We'd go into a dimly lit bar and without him saying anything to anybody, he'd have women flocking around. I'd hang around for the leftovers... lol I got him one night though. We kinda knew this one gal that had a hot road runner car with a 383 and all the works... but she was ugly as hell. A nice gal, but not my buddy's style. So she had two good looking gals with her this one night, we talked to them downtown on Main Street, they were to meet us out a a particular bar a ways out of town. Well they did, but one gal was only 19, couldn't get in the bar (I was only 19, but had an ID that said different) anyway as we walked away from the bar, the ugly chick grabbed onto my buddy, took him to her car, the other two grabbed me and went to my car with me. Well at 19, I wouldn't have known how to handle two women, that skill came later. anyway another guy I knew was just getting off work on the second shift. So I got hold of him on the CB radio (just so happened the bar was close to where he worked.) Anyway, this guy was the always prepared for anything type. Hoever when I told him I had a couple of ladies that wanted to meet him, he didn't believe me, so I put them on the squawk box with him while we rode back to town. We met him... somewhere and went in his car, nicer and newer than mine. He showed up with a case of beer on ice, blankets and a large box of condoms, that's how prepared he always was. What happened from there, well you don't need to know. Anyway, the ugly broad that latched onto my buddy must have had a great time, she was like in love with him from then on. Eventually he tried to run her off with a shotgun, even that didn't work. I met her again years later, she'd blossomed into a beautiful woman. Anyways, I never did let my buddy live that down.

I cut my teeth on an old red AUTOCAR it started out with a LeRioy V8 gas engine . I bought it used for $500.00 from ESSO Oil to haul steel out of the mills around Pittsburgh , Pa. it lasted 2 trips to Dayton,Ohio. Hauled it back to Pittsburgh Cummins and had a 200 single disc. pump put in and ran it for 9 yrs. You have to watch out some old Cummins with the old style pumps they did'nt have a fuel return line to help keep the fuel warm and would runaway when out of fuel or if it gelled up,had it happen in real cold weather going down a long hill a couple times, luckily I caught it in time. Sold it and bought a new 1965 AutoCAR I quit driving in 1975. I went to running heavy equipment. I'm now 85 yrs.young. This video gave me goose bumps when I watched it. I am sure you probably already know but be careful when you put power to anything that old. Use your nose so if you smell anything wierd better unhook it. Real easy to start a fire. Varmints like to knaw on wires.Think I would put a bar to the flywheel to make sure it isn't froze up. Oil looked black but good. No milky stuff. Oil and water are seperate like they are supposed to be. Use a little patience and change the fuel filter and set up a small container (5 gal fuel container works good)with new fuel going to pump. If the rack is stuck you will know it quickly. Have someone with you when you start it so if it runs away close off the air intake to stop it. Keep us posted and good luck.

It looks like an H series probably a 185 or 220 HP . The fuel shut off is on the top of the fuel pump and it has a wire going to it . There is a nob on the front that you can turn in to open the solenoid manually. It is probably frozen up . The oil filter is a bag type filter with an aluminum spool that you wrap the cloth bag around. These were pretty reliable engines until they jacked up the horse power put turbos and superchargers on em . Not enough bolts to hold the head still even at 450-500 ft lbs of torque and they would leak like hell. Worked on many of them but they were pretty much obsolete when I started working at Cummins in 1972 . God bless you for wanting to even mess around with this old dinosaur. There should be a big old knob under the dash to pull for the compression release . Get the engine spinning in cold weather and slowly release it . It was a great feature .

It wasn't a lack of available current that prevented the starter from engaging the flywheel when you jumped across it.. The solenoid does two jobs.. It mechanically engages a large disk (usually a disk) that makes the electrical connection across the two large wires which engages the motor, and the solenoid magnetic coil also pivots out the gear to engage the flywheel as well. One mechanical action, two tasks. Another potential problem is that if you have the polarity backward going to the solenoid, the magnetic field will try to pull the plunger in the wrong direction not allowing either task to complete.
@darrelfuhrman8217

Fred Flintstone Wrong! A magnet will work no matter the polarity of the magnet. The polarity of the magnet will matter on a reversible motor, another magnet. Polarity does not matter to a solenoid!

The problem was that he bypassed the solenoid completely when he jumped across the two big studs. He should have jumped from the hot stud to the start terminal and that would engage the starter motor.

Your AutoCar has a series-parallel switch, I think that it is in one box behind the batteries. Before you disconnect ANY wires, make a drawing of any & all wires & cables connected to the batteries. Be sure to mark the positive and negative battery cables. Be sure that you map any & ALL cables & wires on your series-parallel switch. Always park the truck in neutral, some systems will start cranking when some wires are grounded. There are 12 main ways to wire a 24v-12v series-parallel switch, with 4 minor ways, with means almost 50 ways to hook up your system. I know I had to wire a truck up that some one disconnected the batteries & series-parallel switch. You have it cut down to 24 ways now that you know that it has positive ground. Be careful there are 24-12 systems that use 24v starting with one side 12 volt negative ground, the other side is 12 volt positive ground. The starter is 24 volt isolated! 2 cables! No ground! Look at a John Deere 4010, 4020, 5010, 5020 early design diesel. It is called a split load system. Good luck. You will need it with this truck. On a John Deere WA-17 I converted it from a series-parallel 24v 12v to a straight 12 volt system. I had to change the starter to the current Cummins 12v. And had to remove the generator and installed an alternator. Good luck. From north east Montana.

Sounds like an interesting thing to see. Electric isn't as difficult as you might think but be careful like was said before make sure you have the gearbox or gearboxes in neutral. My father had driven a twin stick Autocar in the early 50's and I have a picture of him standing next to it. I hear about Autocars and I think of him. One thing that I remember my father telling me is that the Cummins diesels of the day had a compression release on them as well.

Wow the memories that old beast brings back! I am the oldest son of a wonderful man who fathered six of us, who owned a smallish Mom&Pop type trucking company back from 1933, 1981. For the first 40 years all they hauled was meats, with Grandfather Rights from The Boston Meat Markets into Rhode Island, with a small fleet of 10 International Straight Jobs with Thermo-King Refer Units in 18-22’ insulated bodies. Later on in the mid-late 70’s the International’s were replaced with a fleet of GMC 6500-9500 gas powered 351-401 V6’s, with a couple Mack R 190 Models, with 24’ bodies, 160 hp Scania Varbus Straight 6 Diesel with Twin Stick 10 speeds to do the heavy lifting. Then the business was forced to expand into hauling Dry Goods, Groceries in other woods, with the need for Tractor Trailers, in both dry and Refrigerated Trailers. The Tractors were all but one was bought used. They were all single axle White Motor Company Tractors with 180-220 hp Cummins. The one 220 was a Turbo, all the others were NA, all were hooked to a Ten Speed Roadranger. That all looked very similar to the one above in the video, even just about the same color. At one time a nearby trucking company that was a good sized regional carrier that went out of business in the mid 70’s, that helped us buy some much needed inexpensive equipment to help us service our biggest local customer, a local Supermarket Chain, with a warehouse just a few miles from our terminal. So we were able to use old White Motor Co. Mustang Tractors, that were gas powered, with huge straight 6 flat headed engines and 5 speeds that were very hard to shift. I have to say that engine in your Autocar looks just like those in our Whites! Big dumb engines with bulletproof reliability! We had a fantastic Mechanic that spent ten years in The U.S.C.G. as a Master Mechanic. That man taught me so many things! Plus tricks like using automatic transmission fluid to fill the fuel filters when changing them, or using starter fluid that you sprayed into a tire that broke the bead off it’s wheel, then flick a lit match into it to create the pressure needed to instantly blow the tire up onto the wheel bead! Our Cummins powered trucks were all POSS Ground, with 4,6volt batteries on each side, along with the compression release to get them cranking over fast enough to start! But anyways good luck to all your endeavors and stay safe!

@Fatamus

What dose run and park mean? Well the wipers run on air. When you turn them on they start by zipping to across the windshield and then you turn them down to adjust the speed; when you go to turn them off they just stop wherever they happen to be on the windshield so to Park them you just turn the knob a little more.

You AwefulCar used 24 volt starter that was isolated and positive ground if I remember ancient history correctly the box behind the batteries as your thought converted back to 12 volts negative ground if I remember correctly. Dam it been a long time like 30 years since I worked on one with this setup. I highly recommend getting a new fuel filter and pump the use the decayed diesel in the tank to light brush fires and put 10 gallons of fresh fuel in the tank and some algae/fuel treatment in the tank, and repair the battery terminal connects and get batteries for the truck. I would also crack the drain plug fot the oil to see if any water drains out of the engine just to be on the safe side. The lever inside the cab you could pull on is for lack of better description a compression release that you pull when first crank the engine to allow it to spin more easily. Make sure to tape up the intake manifold to keep critters out during its winter slump and good luck.

I'd really consider draining the old fuel out of the tank, draining the system and changing out the fuel filter, then refilling and mixing some of the old fuel back in over time if you want to. That many years sitting might have made a mess of the fuel, lots of condensation cycles. Fresh fuel, prime everything and purge the system with compressed air going into the tank with the fuel lines cracked at the injectors. You can check for leaks and prime fresh diesel right to the injectors in one process. Also might help to throw a can of injector cleaner in, and remember that these older diesels were built for running a much higher sulfur content in the fuel for upper cylinder lubrication - I put upper cylinder lubricant in the tank on my older engines to help keep things smooth.

Something to bare in mind that I’ve seen in other video’s dealing with old Diesel engines that have been sitting for awhile is to first bar the engine over to make sure it isn’t seized up, that way you won’t burn up the starter trying to crank it over, and definitely go through the injectors and the rack to make sure none are stuck open, otherwise you’ll most likely have a run away. With that said looking forward to hearing her fire up 👍
