Just a correction. Luggage less than 160 cm (length x width x height) may be taken on board and placed in the overhead rack or kept at the seat. From 160 cm, a reservation needs to be made. this means reserving seats at the back (last row) of a forward-facing cabin that also has dedicated space between the seat and the wall of the cabin for this luggage. There is NO extra charge for this seat with the allocated luggage space. Some cars also have a luggage rack (with security restraints) close to the bathrooms that can be reserved. Failure to secure prior reservations for "oversized" luggage will result in a small fine. Also note that passengers are allowed 2 pieces of luggage, with a 30 kg (about 66 lbs.) weight limit per piece.

When buying the tickets at the counter, just point out that you have big luggage. When buying from a ticket vending machine, the machine should even just ask you if you have any oversized luggage and will point you to the options of either the last row or, if available, the luggage racks. For those luggage racks, if available, you also need to add it to your reservation. If you have not made a reservation, you are requested to notify the crew while boarding. And yes, I have seen checks where the crew noticed luggage behind the last row while the last row was empty and they were able to identify the passengers they belong to without even asking anyone, so they do look out when boarding for this. Those people were kindly asked to move the luggage (as the cases were not considered oversized). When there is no last row seat available anymore and no luggage rack, and you are bringing oversized luggage? You'll have to wait for a train that has space for you. But with so many trains going between Osaka and Tokyo, that should not be a problem.

We have three trips on Shinkansen this year, the first in March. Really smooth, quick and precisely on time. Stops at station along the way were less than 90 seconds from whoa to go so you make sure you're on the right place on the platform with the doors lining up precisely with the platform guidelines. Plenty of legroom, even in economy. Wifi was quite acceptable. On our Tokyo-Osaka trip Mt Fuji was cloudfree and was a spectacular sight, just as good as any tourist pamphlets! On a side note, what added to our Japanese experience was the general courteousness and politeness of the Japanese people we dealt with. Absolutely no graffiti, no homeless, amazingly clean and (importatntly) absolutely no tipping. We liked Japan it so much we went back for a second trip a few month later. I don't think you will ever see a bullet train in USA - really expensive to establish the right infrastructure and it would need to be done from public funding. No private company would have the funds to do such a project, which would take years to complete. I can't imagine 340,000 Americans giving up their cars to travel on a train.- every day. Anyway, superb video Jeb. Your production quality and commentary keeps improving.

Will have to disagree agree on a couple things. I did see some graffiti (rare) and homeless (really rare) in Tokyo last week. Also Brightline is doing well in Florida and if they do LA to Vegas (that will be more in line with HSR).
@mham13306 ай бұрын
No tipping? The gratuity must be included in the price of the ticket, along with the meals. When Japanese came and stayed in the hotels, at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. They would put a tip underneath the pillow for the person that would be cleaning the room. Very nice of them.

Hi Jeb and Suzanne, once again it was a pleasure to meet the two of you at Shin-Osaka. I must have run into you in the between your filming. In regards to the oversized bags, the sections you highlighted at the back of each carriage are for storage are actually free. You just need to book them in advance (on a 1st come, 1st served basis). But as you found out there is ample storage for bags above your seat. Top tip for travellers in the normal cars. If your route has the 2 -3 seat configuration such as the (Shin-Osaka - Hakata route) and you have a lot of luggage book seats in the 2 seat side of the train as there is more overhead space per seat than the other side.

Having used the Shinkansen frequently over my life, I can attest to how much of a spaceship it feels like. And when you really put it into perspective - how it used to be an 8-12 hour car ride, let alone a 7 day ride by horse 200 years ago - you realize how amazing it is to have such a train available. Houston-Dallas corridor is rumored to be using the N700 Series trains, and when it does come to reality, I hope Texas will be able to experience the glory of the Shinkansen. To anybody interested, the Nozomi is the express service between the biggest cities, but there are cheaper trains that stop at more cities (although they have a similar top speed) - the Hikari (fastest train included in the JR Pass) which follows the Nozomi route, but becomes a local Shinkansen between Nagoya and Osaka; Kodama Shinki which is a local Shinkansen all the way through the line.

Just a few good things I can say about Shinkansen just off the top of my head: 1. You just show up at the station, board and then you're away and there's no need to get to the station 90-120 minutes prior to boarding. This seriously helps travellers save time despite trains are slower than planes 2. Chances of a delay are virtually zero under normal conditions 3. No secrutiy to stop you from bringing whatever you like to eat on board (note: do be courteous and bring food that doesn't have a strong scent like fried foods) 4. When you get there you're (usually) already downtown 5. A perfect safety record 6. Affordable 7. Comfy seats and larger leg room 8. No seatbelts, no turbulenses, and no weird carryon restrictions

JR Passes have increased in price this year, considerable, somewhere between 60 and 70% increase, and no longer allowed to be sold at a discount by travel agencies. The Pass is a great option if you plan to travel far by Shinkansen, but from now on, it is recommended to check beforehand if the pass will be worth it. One advantage is that if you have a pass, you can now also use the ticket machines to make your seat reservation, and if you buy it online, directly from JR, you can even make online seat reservations.

Great video, Jeb and Suzanne. I wish Detroit to Chicago or Atlanta had a true high-speed rail system.

Fantastic video guys!!😸 I think a true high speed connecting San Diego, LA, and the Bay Area would’ve been great!😸

On the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Osaka back in April and the speed in which the train is moving, you can’t feel it. Great reporting Jeb!

You should try high speed rail in the UK - also very very smooth. Not quite as fast but smooth!

My father took a trip to Japan in either 1965 or 66 and rode the original bullet train. I remember him talking about how smooth and quiet even that train was almost 60 years ago. Unfortunately. We still don't have anything like that in this country 60 years later.

Jeb...first, thanks (as always) for a great video. Second, as to your question early in the video, a high speed line connecting major metro areas that are not that far apart would be awesome, e.g., Minneapolis. St Paul to Chicago, or similar major metro areas not too far from each other. Another example, Seattle to Portland, LA to San Fran...you get the idea. Relieve interstate traffic and short air trips. Of course, I'd love coast to coast high speed rail, but being 69 years young, that's not gonna happen in MY lifetime...LOL

Thanks for the memories! Used to live in Niigata, Japan, so if I needed to go to Osaka, I'd often be on that service! The N700 isn't the newest service any more. If you really want to go in style, look out for services with Grand Class (first class plus). However, the Toreiyu Tsubasa is something special...
@Hans-gb4mv Жыл бұрын
But that service doesn't run on the Tokaido Shinkansen line. The N700 Supreme is also a recently upgraded version of the N700A, when you have that, you can feel some difference in ride comfort as well, and if you want the latest and greatest, you'll have to travel to Kyushu and try the newest 800 series to Nagasaki, but also no Gran Class

Great video, as always! As for your bulky luggage, you could use the spaces on both ends of each car for free but you need to make a reservation when you book your reserved seat. If it's mid size or bigger, I would use one of those same-day luggage delivery services, such as Kuroneko, for only $10.00 - 20.00. Remember you may not find escalators or elevators in those otherwise fantastic Japanese train stations.😊

You mentioned it briefly, but when city hopping through Japan be sure to use the luggage shipping services or lockers found in most of the stations.
