I think the fact that it's a round trip and ONLY two days makes it a bit too excessive for me. I can't stomach the idea of paying that much only to end up right back where I started 48 hours later. Now if it was like 96 to 128 hours total. Absolutely worth it that way.

Jeb and Suzzane, as a fan of Japanese trains since I was 6 years old, I had the biggest grin on my face the entire time watching this video! As awesome as Train Suite Shikishima is, but Japanese trains delight no matter what kind you're riding. What I love best is their uniqueness, the whole experience of using them, the scenery that passes by the window and the unmatched enthusiasm the Japanese people share about trains. It's amazing when you're waved off by the staff at the station, everyone is taking pictures on the platform and the staff are very accommodating to us railfans. I just came back from a 2-week holiday to Japan and I already want to go back. I'm so glad you enjoyed your journey and thanks so much for taking us along for the ride!

Seeing this train is a surprise since I never thought something like that was possible. I have to admit another massive dose of respect for you; since traveling to Antarctica and now this Japanese luxury train. You have given me recollection of one of my unique experiences of visiting and traveling by rail in Japan in the mid 1990s. I visited Fusa, and some small mountain towns in the opposite direction to Tokyo.

Let’s say you rode the train to and from work, that’s counted as two passengers, then you do that 5 times a week and you’re up to 10, times that by 48 weeks (assuming 4 weeks annual leave) and then you’re up to 480. Times that by the population of Japan (125million, and you get to 60billion). Obviously not everyone rides the trains that often, but even if it’s only one in five, that gets you to your supposedly impossible 18 billion.

There used to be "The American Orient Express", which was pretty much the same concept, and one of the coolest aspects was they had managed to acquire historic cars from famously luxurious trains of the past to be the train cars, like the Santa Fe's Super Chief and New York Central's 20th Century Limited. Sadly it didn't take off. They tried to partner with Amtrak, but that only put it on borrowed time. The cars were auctioned off and the train is no more.

I worked for a Japanese company for years and travelled there often. I did a variety of excursions throughout the country. I don't think I could have justified this trip in my mind, even back then when I was discovering and loving the country. That's a lot of money. But, it is beautiful. In 2018, Japan Railways sent out an apology due to a Shinkansen leaving 25 seconds early The operator was misinformed about the time to leave, and so he closed the doors. When he realized the mistake he decided to leave early as opening then closing the doors would take longer than 25 seconds and they'd be late (and no one was on the platform) But as pointed by a few people, with the trains being so specific, someone might of planned to make the train at this particular time but missed it Still... Really?

I used to live near Tokyo. I was waiting for my local train when this one approached. I was confused by it. It's beautiful, but it also looked so out of place. The popularity of air travel during the 60's was really the death knell for US rail travel. Each railroad had their premier passenger trains. Ex: Atlantic Coast Line had The Champion, Seaboard Air Line had The Silver Meteor, Southern Railway had The Crescent, and Norfolk & Western had The Powhatan Arrow. By the late 60's the railroads were losing money on each passenger train they operated. Amtrak would assume nearly all passenger traffic, and equipment in 1971. The Carter deregulation era saw the abandonment of many rail lines nationwide. By the 2000's, several trains were combined with others or abolished altogether. Brightline seems to be proving very successful in Florida. Hopefully, that service could eventually expand across the country.

I believe you could honestly say the Shiki-Shima is the QM2 of Japan. The forward observation cars would be a railfan's dream here in the US! Aside from the Rocky Mountaineer, it's truly unfortunate we don't have this type of classy service here.

Hello Jeb, I was looking forward to this review ever since the teaser to get your perspective. There are not really ANY reviews of the Shiki-shima experience. My wife and I was able to ride this train in December for a 2N/3D Trip to Aomori/Akita/Matsushima. You covered the experience really well, so I only want share some of my anecdotes. We are in our 30's. Like you, we were the only foreign couple (sort of, I'm half-Japanese, half-Caucasian), my Caucasian wife speaks very little Japanese. I was expecting to translate everything, however this was not the case. Though I can speak Japanese fluently, when my wife was present they spoke in English to ensure my wife was included. Were your announcements also done in English? Our announcements were also done in English, but they also included additional descriptions of the areas that we passed through (whether it be castle ruins/famous location). We all knew those English announcements were done "just" for us 😆 Additional notes as a foreign traveler: - Every excursion, we were provided English brochures without asking (I was given both languages). - Every menu was provided additionally in English, and customized for my wife, who also like you, has an allergy. We never had to mention her allergy. They were are all aware of it. - On the bus, we had dedicated staff sit near us *if* I needed help translating for my wife or if I had any questions about the excursions (I had several) The details were incredible, it is difficult to document everything. Every chef came to us to greet us, and really made us feel special. When my wife complimented the food and joked about getting additional pieces. They brought her more. By far the most memorable is - the staff. Each staff member knew our names and made an effort to converse with us. The trip is really dense and intimate so we often had conversations with many of the crew members. Some staff even remembered some of the answers to the questionnaire we answered after we were accepted applicants. I could type a novel on how great the staff was. At the end of the journey, we wanted to get a quick picture with some of the staff that had helped us; not only did we get that picture - the entire 40+ staff members took a group photo with us in the center. This was incredible and we will never forget it. I would have brought pitchforks on behalf of the Shiki-shima crew if anything negative came out of your review🤣 P.S. It took us 4x before we finally got accepted.

Actually there are a few in Japanese, but unfortunately, none (that I know) have English subtitles. This is the first review of Shikishima in English. (There was a Japan Railway Journal segment, but I don't count that as a review).

Back to my favorite; your train videos! My dad was the mechanic on the Turbo train in Providence, RI back in the day. He and my husband, both passed, but my favorite trips with my husband were on trains. Even short trains like North Conway New Hamphire dinner train (food was amazing) and then the train ride to the top of Mount Washington was so much fun!
