First coat of hemp/lime thermal plaster in family

We bought this stone house in Italy during the pandemic in 2020. The house was a ruin and we saved everything we could, unfortunately that meant only four stone and clay walls 😊 The back wall, against the terrain, was close to collapse; the roof beams were eaten and basically reduced to dust; the inside separation walls were easily taken down and the whole project turned into a heavy renovation/rebuild.

It's been done that way for thousands of years. The first form of plaster was mud and clay. Also that's not sawdust it's Hemp which is a very strong fiber. More and more architects are using it in their builds. It's one of the best insulators for being fire proof and when you make it as a concrete it holds up better then cinder blocks as far as repelling mold and critters. It traps carbon and is biodegradable so it's great for the environment unlike concrete. But best of all a regular built house last 50 to100 years here in the states. A house built with Hemp last from 300 to 500 years..

what made you choose to use plastic mesh? i've seen others do this without it so curious to learn about your thought process!

The fiber glass mesh was imposed to us by the structural engineer. It is indeed more common not to use a mesh under an hemp and lime plaster, but we had no choice on this one ☺️

We use pumice sand in this mix! We describe the mix in details in our video #46! 😉
