You should think about getting a laptop stand and a keyboard for you desk so you don’t have to prop it up on books. It was honestly such a great purchase for me!

Definitely second this! Add a mouse to it as well! The stand can get the camera at your eye level and will also cut down on what they see in the background as well as just make it feel more natural for you, zoom fatigue is real and anything you can do to cut that down helps! Plus a higher laptop means you have room to move and not be seen shuffling anything getting a new pen or turning off a phone if needed etc. helps clear up desk space as well.

Agree on a second monitor! At my current job, I started with just using my laptop for a month (which was totally fine) and then received a monitor for a dual monitor system. Now I can’t go back to just my laptop, game changer and I feel so much more productive!

I recommend a laptop riser and a bluetooth keyboard/mouse for your WFH setup! It's really helpful on your neck and shoulders plus you can type while having the good angle for video calls.

Sounds like you're using Microsoft Teams if you were receiving messages from the meeting you weren't a part of! If so, you'll get accustomed to it pretty quickly. Another tech suggestion, you should get yourself a second monitor so you can take notes on one screen and have your meeting on the other !
