Thanks! I’m glad I posted it now. I arrived home with 26%. I wanted to charge at work off the solar system the next day, plus I had some errands to run that night.

On my recent trip from Brisbane to Rockhampton the weather was very hot (temps around 38 degrees) and one thing I noticed immediately after fast DC charging (particularly on a Tesla SC) the Wh/km was VERY high, was sitting around 23 to 25 kWh/100km. I assumed this was because the battery was very warm post charging at due to the hot weather it took a lot of energy to cool the battery back down. After about 30 mins of driving it came back down to about 15 kWh/100km. Not sure if you've ever noticed this while SC in the hot Sydney weather?

Yes definitely but it ends up averaging out over the trip. Tesla is good at recycling heat energy through the system but when everything is super hot you have no choice but to dump it to atmosphere as waste energy. An ICE vehicle does with 70% of the energy it produces on a normal day 😂. When the ambient is also hot it really does rely more on the HVAC/heat pump system to keep the battery cool. When you hear those noisy thermo fans running at the front it usually means wasted energy. Charging sessions will also be less efficient. It’s still not a massive energy loss averaged over a whole trip. Once you are driving and have some air flowing over everything again it will regain some temperature balance reasonably fast. To a motor running at 50deg a 38deg day is a cool breeze. The heat pump system takes advantage of temperature differentials no matter how insignificant you think it is. I’ll look up a video I watched a while back on the Tesla heat pump system. It’s an amazing feat of engineering. The video was made by a university that trains people on EVs. It’s over an hour long but worth it.

Matt,Starting to catch up on all your content? I just wonder if the 20" tyres by Michelin are more efficient to my trouble hankooks and on a side note the supercharger at hollydene is a nice spot with a winery and restaurant which I will give it a go at some stage

Hey Max. Not totally caught up but getting there. I still have a few left to catch up. Yes my brother in law has been to Hollydene a couple of times on the way to Scone and said it’s a nice spot. I’ve been very impressed with the 20” and the Pilot Sport EV tyres. I think they are the best tyres I’ve ever had. The handling is amazing and they are quiet and efficient. I’ll be at 10000km soon so I’ll measure tread depth all round and make a video on it.

Thanks Matt just to share you that upto 70,000km it should be around 141 watt hour per kilometre overall combined drives. We shall see when that comes around Matt. Cheers

Hi are you able to probs create a video of how you setup SMT and worked out your charging schedule to get the max from your battery. Watched the video that you explained something about battery percentage difference that changed. I have a 2 month old model 3 highland RWD. I have a wall connector at home and really like you only charge using that at the moment. I so far have done several charges from 20%, 30% + SOC to 80% and once a week I charge to 100%. I have it set to not charge above 90% weekly and on a Friday to 100%. I don’t do a lot of driving but there is so much info around having car plugged in while at home.

@@petefan1215 I’d be skeptical of most info out there. The best places for honest info are channels that are not trying to maximise views based off myths about battery life. I never call myself an expert I just use my experience with battery electric machinery to present data and share good info I find during research. LFP chemistry is pretty robust so best thing you can do is not over complicate it. At 100% SOC the LFP cells are only at 3.5-3.6v. This is not stressful for a lion-ion cell. They are under more stress if they are unbalanced which LFP cells are more prone to if not charged to 100% where most of the cell voltage balancing happens. I am very lucky to have the best charging situation where I can charge at work anytime I want and this is mostly from solar. My current charging habit is running it down to between 20-30% before I put it on charge. If I need to do an emergency 1000km trip I can stop at a supercharger 😉. I then leave it to charge to 100% while I am working. Most of the time I can get away with charging once a week but lately I have been charging twice a week. My theory is if you put it on charge just let it go to 100% where it will get some cell balancing. Then let it rest and stabilise for an hour or so after. No need to leave it plugged in. Only time you would leave it plugged in is if you want faster battery and cabin precondition. I have my car set to precondition every morning by 730am when I leave for work. This gives me a warm battery and a comfortable cabin. Fully cycling the battery from a lower SOC to 100% helps to maintain an accurate battery capacity measurement by the BMS. The capacity loss I talk about in some of my videos is degradation. No li-ion battery is immune to this. LFP will have a faster initial degradation over the first 50000km than other chemistries but will have less degradation over the whole lifetime. They tend to stabilise after a while. In saying that battery longevity comes down to a number of things, some are within your control like how you drive and not over discharging the battery, others are managed by the BMS like charging curves and thermal management. One of the unknowns is quality of manufacturing and additives to the battery chemistry. This will be proven in time but CATL are one of the best. So to sum up my answer I’d worry more about your driving habits than charging habits. How you discharge the energy can actually cause more damage than how you charge. Flooring the accelerator at every traffic light will not be good for your battery health.

Thanks mate. I appreciate it! I haven't made a vid like that yet for the Y. My accessory videos haven't been that popular. I think because they have been paid promotions. I am about to upload a sunshade comparison video I filmed last year. I dont have much free time for the channel these days so its been hard to get vids finished. Filming them is easy its just editing that is the killer. Feel free to message me through insta or X if you have a specific question about an accessory. I am not taking on any new paid promotions for a while. It's just not worth it. I dont do this for money anyway. I like the guys at HaloBlk but I have bought those products myself. They send me something for free every now and then as a thank you. Accessory videos I have coming are powered frunk and carbon rear view mirror covers. I havent filmed those yet.

But really enjoy your perspective on owning the MY, incl trips and testing the tech in and around NSW too. I'm in South Sydney and can't wait to use autopilot or even just TACC a lot. Another one on home charging could be good too, 👍

I am hoping to get a towing efficiency test done tomorrow 🤞. It depends how busy I get at work. Testing with car trailer and vintage car. When do you get your car?

@@notinthemanual no date locked in yet.. renoing the garage first that's about 30 years over due, and getting the electric looked at and a charger put in. Then hopefully waiting for any kind of hint of a discount or sale. Seems like so many countries have great sales on MYs except ours. Even NZ right now. If I'm impatient I'll just take the plunge come April methinks 🤸

@@ThePantheons Awesome. My car got delayed and got almost $5k cheaper while I waited. Tesla are pretty honest with this. It won’t increase while you wait though. I’d say MY sales will slow down a bit as rumours of the upgraded version increase. That’s when they will discount heavily. I’m so glad I didn’t wait. You just buy when you’re ready with Tesla. There is always something around the corner to wait for and in the meantime you miss out. I do around 90% of my charging at work off the solar system. We have a wall connector here and can charge at 11kW so I only charge 1-2 times a week. I rarely charge at home. Home charging depends on your charging habits and if you have special time based rates. If you have a small window to charge in then install a faster charger, if not then the UMC is good enough. The Tesla wall connector is very good value for money compared to other home charging connectors. I bought a 32a single phase wall socket to install at home to give me 7kW speeds with the UMC but I have never installed it as I have a flat rate plan and never need to charge fast.

It would be good if Teslas mapping had other supercharger vendors so it can help you more so you dont need to use a better route planner. Up in south east queensland there are a few other high speed super charging options. You're right about the ride quality, I'm a bit disappointed with it. And iv got the 19" wheels so I have an extra 2"of sidewall suspension to dampen the ride... It's a bit like a skateboard

Down this way Superchargers are much easier and many times more reliable than the other options. I used ABRP more for demonstration on this trip. It is most useful being able to customise your arrival SOC. It automatically calculates how much you need to charge. A lot more customisation for a trip. It’s also handy to plan a trip beforehand. The Tesla trip planner within the app is getting better though.

You can search for the non-Tesla chargers and navigate to them but it won’t automatically route to them or pre-heat battery.

I find it a little annoying on this particular road. The speed based and navigation based lane changes are not that great. The entry and exit ramp manoeuvres are pretty sketchy too. Until this improves I just don’t see the benefit. I do love the auto lane change though.
