advice from someone that has lived in the country, about a half-hour from you guys, for my whole life. Your stove is where it is because it needs to heat the entire house in the winter. Getting a load of logs and cutting them into firewood will save you guys so much money in the long run. Putting it in that corner will mean that a lot of the heat that is generated will be going outside! Love what you're doing with the place and totally think it all makes sense, but i just saw that and wanted to offer the advice! Edit: Also remember that glass lets a lot of cold in and lets a lot of heat out, so the sliding glass door at the foot of your bed, while nice, will make for a freezing bedroom and some cold toes come winter!
@Swimdeep4 жыл бұрын
I concur with your assessment, though instead of a slider in the BR, insulated French doors would be a better choice. That space is pretty small a having doors that op n up onto a deck would go far to make the space more livable.
@tamismile24 жыл бұрын
@@Swimdeep insulated French doors was exactly what I was thinking too! And the maintenance is way easier on them and they are also way prettier than sliding doors! 😊 and you can order screens for them also! So you can enjoy laying in bed with a breeze in the summer! 😊

@TheMyrayundt4 жыл бұрын
I agree a wood stove is more about function so you really should keep it where it does the most good, plus the reason for moving it doesn't ring true, if you're sitting and watching the fire 🔥, it's most likely night time, and therefore you won't have a view out the windows anyways...because it's dark 😜. Other thing to remember is chimney clearance. it needs to be 2 feet above anything within 10 feet on the structure. With where it is now, the interior single wall chimney is acting as a radiant heater in the loft as well. With the pitch of the roof, if you move it to the corner, you'll need to have a very tall and expensive outdoor chimney, because you'll need to get double wall pipe for that length of exhaust.

I love the cabin, amazing potential! Note about the wood stove, when it's your heat source it's usually placed intentionally in the centre or heart of the house allowing it to radiate heat efficiently throughout the house. You'll lose alot of heat placing it in the corner by the window and that means burning, cutting, packing and stacking alot more wood. Your cabin is an amazing find, I look forward to all your upcoming vlogs!
@mightykrum674 жыл бұрын
Hi, wish you the best on this new project. Here's some ideas for winter, which is coming fast, I live in Gatineau, so we are probably gonna have similar weather. Primero: If you have the money, redo the insulation. The whole place doesn't seem to have a vapor barrier to protect it from water damage. #1 Remove current siding and seal the exterior walls & windows with Tyvek (Good air/vapor seal is more important than R60 walls) #2 add 2-4 inches of panel insolation on the exterior. #3 Put back siding #4 Remove all batt insulation inside #5 Install new batt insulation #6 Cover with a vapor barrier (Try to prevent any wholes like a electric plug fixture) Repeat all this for floor and roof if you have the time. Roof would be the most impactful change honestly. This will drastically increase your comfort level and the amount of wood you'll need to burn. Segundo: Change the wood stove for a more efficient furnace(or add) and find a way to circulate the heat in the home (Cheap idea is open concept + fans). Tercero: Change the windows ASAP. Double pane. Triple pane would be a waste of money on an old cabin. Take your time doing the details during installation to prevent water leakage and creating an air tight seal.
@jonap57404 жыл бұрын
I was looking at it thinking how cold it's going to be with just that wood stove, and not much insulation. But doesn't open concept require a main support beam across the ceiling? That's thousands of dollars...
@mightykrum674 жыл бұрын
@@jonap5740 agreed, I would go cheap open concept. Keep the columns. Maybe have some walls go 80% with an opening at the top to encourage air movement and allow natural light in.
@AntiochChristtian4 жыл бұрын
OMG! Beautiful find! Beautiful Property!! However, the best place for your wood stove is in the center of the space to provide as much heat to every room. Moving it to an outside wall causes a great deal of lost heat. Plus it can also cause the wall to sweat and over time creates possible moisture and mold damage. The stove is in a good place. As you sit and look outside, it warms your backside. Enjoy the adventure. God Bless...

These are great ideas but they are really only suited to warm climates. Folding doors and sliding doors, anything with lots of glass, lose so much heat and they leak air. They aren't worth it. So happy for you guys, looks like you're having fun with all of the projects! And such a beautiful place!! Mold remediation! Don't skip it. Mold can make you sick if left to grow. Put a dehumidifier in the basement, one in the main floor near bathroom/kitchen. I think I remember there being a crawl space that was not sealed (soil was exposed to underneath the floor of the cabin) if that is true, you have to seal it off to prevent mold and moisture damage. I'm sure you know it needs a new roof. Basically, owning a house involves keeping it from being damaged by water, avoiding deterioration, decorations, and you're good to go.

Bec--if mosquitoes love you, start taking vitamin B1 every day and it turns your blood less sweet so the mosquitoes don't bite as much. I learned this from a friend years ago when we were in St. John....I had 42 bites and she had 1!!!
@mzzsiia4 жыл бұрын
Me too girl. As a fellow mosquito Ontarian they LOVE me. I don’t know if it’s my addiction to Cola or what bud. BUT I found these steps are my go to: (as an Ontario im aware how weather goes from left to right this season ) 1. Shower with IRISH springs (it smells not the best but mosquitos HATE it ) Johnson’s baby Aloe too but that’s impossible to find 2. MOSIQUITO SPRAAAAAAAY. In Canada we have some ass**** bugs. Organic it doesn’t matters. whatever after a shower spray right on term bug cheeks and ear spray lmao . I SWEAR I even wear the kids coil cereenala bracelets for extra and tbh they work decently. 3. BLACK less cotton clothing for fire pits and white less cottons for dummy days. I’m sure there’s 3847482826 others plans but as a vivid GTA litttle exploder that lives outside but bugs hate me ,who has ultra sensitive skin, these have made me be able to live lnaob

For sure they avoid you in black/dark fabric! (but love white/lighter colors). It's the best trick. Vanilla body spray or lavender essential oil work great to keep them away, without toxicity from other sprays. Make an easy spray: 4 oz/125 mL water (metric 💕) 1 tsp/5mL olive oil 10 drops (lavender, etc) essential oil Shake well & apply; skin, clothing, tent, bed, house, dog, etc. 😊💕

That basement was in better shape than I thought, and all of that reusable cabinetry, wood, etc. Wish I could fast forward 2 years and see the results lol I know the stove in the corner is an aesthetic but I agree with the placement, just add blowers as suggested and re-pipe the exhaust. You can put a couple plug in radiators to heat the upstairs when there are guests. I love the idea of an extra cabin, would that become your main or a guest/Airbnb?? If you are planning a cabin, not sure you need to turn that shed into a tiny home, probably need it more as a shed with grounds maintenance a constant. Create a driveway, fix up the grounds....grow a family there, yes??

To heat the basement using stove heat... Cut a hole in the floor, run a dryer hose down through it with a small fan inside the dryer hose. Pro tip. LOVE the new place, guys. Can't wait to see it transform!
@iamsoaringeagle4 жыл бұрын
But .... most wood stoves of that design have a hole already cut in the bottom of the stove to pull cold air into the stove for burning.
@ryanbewley4 жыл бұрын
@@iamsoaringeagle No more holes required in stove to run the dryer vent hose like I mentioned. It simply sits a few inches off of the stove on any side, typically the back. The little fan in the end of the hose draws the heat from the outside of the stove and pulls it down the hose. Best to have another fan on the other end. Push/pull configuration.
