Much more footage to come! This edit was getting very long so I broke it into multiple videos, also because video editing takes so much time & I just want to wrench on this thing! Also don't mind all the "over throttling" during this part, that was just me being dumb, because I'm used to my current daily driver CRX that easily spins 10,000rpm. It actually goes into gear & drives with ZERO throttle pedal & no stalling, which is kind of funny... it's such a tractor haha!

Now, just wait til the first time you put it out on the highway at speed! Looks like you live someplace rural, guessing tags and registration not gonna be an issue. (as much as any project is really "finished")
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
Right! It may sound funny but I'm pretty excited for the highway testing, because the old setup could barely pull itself along at 70mph... & this new setup should easily cruise 70-80 in a nice rpm range too :D The interior shouldn't be a big deal really, honestly just have to toss the dash back in with a plate for the new gauges, then the heater/aircon box I need to make. The hood I have a fun idea for, & full real exhaust I'm waiting on setting up a TIG welder. The windshield could be very expensive though :(

Well mate it runs, good work. FFS finish the exhaust and get it exiting out the back. Diesel oil and soot is a pain to clean off glass and is NOT healthy to breath in, which you will do in its current position. Not to mention the noise factor. A decent filter housing and airbox will save this things engine in the wet or dusty conditions, the filter you have stuck on there only stops large rocks and small children being injested. That and it would add at least 2 more videos to this saga. Ignore if youve only fitted these filters and exhaust to run around the yard. Cheers
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
Thanks & I will! I'm waiting to setup my TIG welder so I can start playing with aluminum & stainless. Building exhaust systems has been kind of fun for me lately, & I've been practicing on my other builds by making full custom systems with my own headers etc. Oh yeah the intake is temporary too, because that goofy looking cone filter is just for the shakedown runs. I have a fancy twin-element Donaldson setup (you may have spotted it in earlier videos) that'll lay right on the passenger fenderwell & shoot thru for a proper snorkel up high. Good looking out though!

@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
For sure, especially for how I'm looking to use it to wander more of North America than I've seen before. I'm pretty confident in my numbers crunching for the ratios, but only real world testing will tell the full story. The old setup was borderline dangerous on the highways here, trying to even cruise 60-65 when everyone's whipping by at +80mph... not ideal.

Well done dude! I've been following your videos about the swap since the 9th video I think It's good seeing it finally move the vehicle! Very happy for you, we can see your excitement haha Hey, soon you will learn it's not even necessary to rise the rpm while declutching, unlike a gasoline engine, those diesels have a good amount of their torque available while idling I bet it has more torque in idle than the original gas engine had at the peak torque RPM haha It's very satisfying to drive in the low 1400 rpm having tons of torque while going up hill haha Congrats
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын

Tinker I really want to see this thing on the trails. How do you think the weight of the 4bt will affect performance, axle reliability and all that? Any future mods planned to support the 4bt? Did you have to get stiffer than stock springs?
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
Same here! It's going to be a fun comparison against that old Rover V8, especially on the more challenging sand dune & Drummond Island trails. I think weight issues like spring rates going all out of whack & the axles becoming the new weak link was something I couldn't avoid, especially with all the added cargo from the camper setup inside. Oh yes, I already have design plans in the works for custom building a 3-link & 4-link long travel suspension, plus custom building a pair of tough Ford 9's or Dana 60 axles.
@williamwhitted24904 жыл бұрын
Tinker I think it’s gonna be a little bit of a dog on the dunes. Diesel is great for overland, but the lack of throttle response/ no boost until it gets moving will hurt you a bit. But on the upside, ALL THE TORQUE! Eagerly awaiting the results as always!

No gearing problem, my daily driver right now is a Honda race car that runs up to 10,000 rpm so I was foolishly getting carried away with the throttle pedal... oops! It doesn't even need any throttle input to move out of gear haha!

Same here, it's been WAY too long! And the last few trips, to sand dunes especially, the old Rover V8 was really struggling to get me around... so I'm very much looking forward to redemption on the trail.

@@Tinker1837 mad idea I've wondered about is turbo blow off valve piped into exhaust side of the turbo so it doesn't lose spooling up speed or lessens lag?
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... not a bad idea, they do have "truck ghillie suits" the military uses to hide things. Anti-lag! I wonder how/if that would work on a diesel with the much higher cylinder pressures?
@jamescunliffe98724 жыл бұрын
@@Tinker1837 it might cut out flutter as the pressure would constantly be fed instead of air spent and the blades sucking on a void,lol like a blockage in a vacuum cleaner that cleared by sticking your hand on the end to cut air completely then taking off,lol seals in turbo might last longer?

Cant wait to see the hood back on it? Just subscribed yesterday. Does it still have factory abs? Ace system?
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
I've got a unique idea for the hood. Thanks! Nope, no ABS at all now & wow was it so much easier to bleed the air from the system without it! No ACE or any stock electrics at all, been removed from front to back so I can build a custom wiring system in military / aircraft style 👍

@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
I think mine was around $70, not sure how much for an original Cummins/Bosch solenoid.
@duenpuen68624 жыл бұрын
Nice does Cummins make a quiet version diesel that’s 4 cylinders
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
Yes actually! They have a new engine called the R2.8 that may be what you're looking for. These old mechanical Cummins are just loud no matter what exhaust or intake you use.

All this time, he was a ginger, theres always something. Also, fucking sweet, thing is gnarly. Two things, make sure that vacume hose for the booster is really rigid, rubber has a bad habbit of collapsing under vacume, hard plastic/pex is a good substitute. Also im sure you did homework but most folks including deboss himself say the he35s are too big, too much lag. Im sure you saw he just ripped apart his 4bt. Cant wait to see this thing crawling.
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
No soul, but a 4BT? Could be worse... ha! Good tip, it's something that I've been thinking was an iffy call maybe by using the silicone hose for that. Oh well that's actually a special unit called a "Super HX30W" which has the quick spooling smaller volume 6cm exhaust housing but still with the large HX35 sized outlet, & it has the biggest wheel you can fit in an H-30 size compressor housing. So all the boost & none of the lag, but I won't say compounds aren't a possibility in the future, made sure to leave plenty of space for more snails 👍
@maxsav0074 жыл бұрын
@@Tinker1837 I think a cummins makes any daywalker tolerable. But ya hard plastic booster lines crack all the time and when folks patch them with hose it usually collapses, even over just 1-2". Well in that case, she gonna rip. Not that ive looked but ive never seen compounds on a 4bt, or a disco.... first ever disco pull truck. Yeee haww

@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
Haha yes for sure! Both ends too: front is down from the engine swap, rear is down from the camper build. I'll probably replace the springs very soon, just to hold me over until I build my custom long travel suspension.
@gaboonviper854 жыл бұрын
@@Tinker1837 can you fab up some spacers in the meantime?
@Tinker18374 жыл бұрын
Probably yeah, but the spring rates are all out of whack on account of the new weight, so even with spacers they'll compress too easy & want to bottom the shocks.
