Agreed. The Nissan Z feels like a major compromise based on the reviews I've read and watched so far. The $40k version is very bare bones and is meant to be a headline catcher as a 400hp RWD 6 speed sports car but without the actual sport in it as it lacks a multitude of critical performance upgrades (it's more like a muscle car). The $50k Performance trim is their sports car equivalent to the GR Supra but with the use of older tech/chassis and notably more weight for only $1k less in price. The 9 speed auto offers more speed than the six speed manual but based on the reviews on the auto, the auto shifts and down shifts are extremely lazy. Six speed manual would be the way to go but is more than a half second slower than the auto in the quarter mile.

The first car I bought(after parents help) was an 81 280xz, silver and t-tops,. why dont we have t-tops anymore.. bought a 2003 350, then 2009 370, then 2012 370 nismo and now 2024 manual sport Z. fun as hell. little different from the nismo as far as handling but the turbo boost is impressive. Still getting use to this car but it's a seriously fun ride. I would buy the new nismo but want manual even if I'm not faster

It was to stick to the roots of a inline six that has always been under the hood of every generation supra. Yes making a new inline six from scratch would have made the supra even more expensive than it is. At the time BMW was one of the few who made a inline six agreeable for a supra. The Z looks great, except that grill needs some help. Japan's exclusive split grill should've been general production imo. My only other complaints are the underwhelming exhaust and really bad backup camera. Overall it's a good, fun car for the money with only some minor downsides.

People complain about the price of the z . When the 300zx turbo left the market in 96 it was over 43,000. The new z and the supra are priced right in 50,000 dollar range. That said it's not affordable for everyone.

@@beexiong2995 nonsense. The vr30's main heel is the belt alignment issue which has been mostly resolved in the Qs and I'm sure it has been ironed out in the Z. Stock turbos do 420-450 to the wheels with just downpipe and tune. As far as cooling, AMS makes a direct bolt on heat exchanger that is so good, it's even in partnership with Infiniti. The AMS exchanger can be bought with official Infiniti branding. So maybe 2-2.5k in mods, add a few hundred for labor and you're doing 500+hp conservatively. More if you're doing ethanol blends.

I agree, Supra may win the battle of measurable numbers, (not by a lot) and have a little bit more modern feeling interior, but the Z wins on retro esthetics and what people really want in a personal sports car. Sure some people buy these things to mod and impress their track day bros, but for the vast majority it will be weekend road tripper (for one or two people) or even a cool commuter car thats quite fun when the work week is over. Is it perfect? No..not sure any car fits that bill. However it's not what it isnt, but what it IS. This thing is a near perfect representation of what the original 240Z should have evolved into years ago...not in the waning days of ice. In any case I'm glad it exists, and as an owner of '78 280Z in my early 20's...this is the first Z (and Nissan product period) to make my maybe list in the near future.

So if its pure performance you want, go supra, but if you want a short wheelbased q60 redsport, but still is very much a Z through and through then get a z, getting a manual doesn't matter because the supra comes with that now as well.... If you’re basing your buying decision off of one drag race, that’s your choice , no matter how silly it is. The Z has a double wishbone suspension, which is traditional sports car vs the BMW setup. The Z also has larger brakes all around. So I don’t see how you’re talking about “ pure performance “ just based on 1 drag race. That’s not performance, that’s a drag race. The Z is a low 12 second, manual transmission, rear wheel drive, double wishbone, Japanese sports car. The Supra does not come with a manual NOW either. It has been announced , but none are on the streets. The Z will outsell the BMW , probably 2:1 …. That’s your drag race.

@@restlessyouthproductions I can tell from that race that with good traction the Z and Supra will be close in a quarter mile...Only the auto Z though because the manual is much slower than the Auto z or current auto only supra. Manual Supra is incoming but will also be slower than its Auto counterpart but my guess is also faster than manual Z. Yeah Z has a double wishbone front suspension and thats nice but doesn't mean its an overall package that will out perform the Supra's suspension setup.. Lastly, the Z has always outsold the Supra probably every generation.. The 4th gen supra was the worst selling to date but much more well known and desired over the 300zx of its generation today.

@@cjpp78ytube Nice summary. If I had a choice between the two , it would be the Z all day. I think people really dismiss the " BMW" callout as a troll or a tired put down, but it's not. The Supra is not a JDM. It even hurts to write that because the 2JZ Supra was everything. I LOVED that car. I preferred it over the 300 ZX. The current Supra is fast and looks like it handles very well. But there's no excitement or traditional passion for it. Personally, I think it's over dramatic looking with the fake vents and sharp angles. There's no tradition in the body lines. This Z has elements going all the way back to the Datson 280. So being a few tenths of a second slower than the Supra is irrelevant. I'm not a race car driver. 4.0 0-60 on stock tires is fast enough, especially considering it chirps and spins all the way through 3rd gear. If it puts the power down with better tires, it's under 4 secs. BMW made a monster engine, but at the end of the day.. there's only 1 true kings of the JDM in this price point and that's the Z. it stands alone.

I like everyone trying to hate and say the Supra is better. Performance isn't everything, and Toyota is a little too late with their manual. Not to mention the Supra has those cheesey fake vents and looks terrible, nothing like their FT-1 concept. The fact that it's not all Toyota unsettles some.

Soon tesla will run faster than any gas powered vehicle, speed is pointless in this case. Toyota never gave the looks of the F1 everyone wanted. Nissan stayed loyal to their concept, their roots and heritage, it may not be perfect, Nissan never stated the car was going to be faster than the BMW Supra, but it gave what everyone wanted a manual since release date, kept the original concept, and the looks are timeless, this Z will sell 10x more than the Supra. And it will be seen out in the streets for another 10-30 years. Unlike the Supra it was dead upon release, horrible looks with the fake vents and cup holders being the only thing designed by toyota an already forgotten small ugly Z4 with toyota badges.

Also, the Mustang that beat it as well shares the same engine as the GT a 44k car. Thus, a car that is 7k destroys it off the line.

@@SamCarLegion It was stock vs stock and because Nissan went cheap with the car (like all of it's outdated features) the tires were bridgestone. Who buys a brand new car to have to turn around and spend another 700-1,000 dollars on Michelin tires? Also, the Supra is a rear wheel drive car. And the Mustang is a pretend AWD. So, that statement kind of goes void.

The IS500 is much more nimble than the LC500. They feel about the same to 60mph. The LC500 is fun but is much heavier than the IS500.

@@bigchocolate8547 I've never had them side by side but the IS500 definitely feels quicker and yeap, weight is the reason. The tire sizes are pretty comparable 275/35/21 (LC) vs. 265/35/19(IS). The looks of the LC really help but the Supra or Z should be much quicker. That V8 sounds great though 🎼🎶🎵

Summary: the Z is an awesome car that gets gapped by its competitors in its segment and price point. No, I’m not delusional, the Supra is a better car in every way but I’m going to buy the Z anyways. The hard plastic interior is better and the horrible road noise makes it more in engaging.

Good job on the review. The new Z kills most of it's competition so easily especially the supra - the poor man's batmobile. If Nissan can get these for purchase by July 01 in U.S. they are going to be HOT.
