You probably already know this, but I thought I would say it anyway. The LS is in backwards, and the pan may not be baffled for being backwards, so when you take off or really get into it, it might be oilstarved. Since some of the swap has been a bit kludgey, you may want to verify the pan has been adapted for running backwards.

For the trunk/hood: get a 90deg elbow that goes between the manifold and throttle body - that will give you 3-4" of clearance. If you get a 99-02 Silverado cold air tube kit, it will have a very tight radius 90deg elbow (to clear the clutch fan). That will save 1-2".

Hi Alex, If you install bolts from the top down, if they ever work lose, you will only ever lose the nut. The bolt will stay in the bold hole. Sometimes you can lose the nut and the fact that the bolt is in the hole alone will stop whatever it is to stay in one piece. I have spent over 20 years in the Ductwork industry and it has been a life saver more than once. Love your channel!

Window roll down fix. Someone replaced the window regulator before. The 996 and 986 had the same window regulators, theres a bump stop preventing your drivers side window from going down all the way. Remove the first bump stop(for the 986) by removing the top screw/bracket on the window regulator. Good luck!

Agree... also not sure what kind of person buys $10,000 forged 3 piece wheels and then fits shitty stretched Toyos, hopefully Alex puts some decent rubber on at the same time - not sure what he's going to do though as with that offset, the only way a tyre isn't going to rub is with that stupid stretch - which is probably why they did it.
@Beer_Dad1975
@Beer_Dad1975 6 ай бұрын
@@justinmurphy2227 Yeah, tyre manufacturers typically have a minimum and maximum rim width that a specific tyre width/profile is supposed to work within. When you go with too narrow a tyre, as is clearly the case here, you compromise the design of both the bead and the sidewall - meaning the tyre will not be working within its engineered specifications. Generally a stretch like this will cause the car to have significantly less grip than it should as it will affect the contact patch, will contribute to a very poor ride quality as the sidewall flex will be basically gone, and may even cause the tyre bead to unseat or some other failure point - it's both unsafe and reduces performance. Of course they are shitty Toyo tyres so they aren't much good to start off with.

You absolutely need to wire the fans to the LS ECU. That ECU should already have fan control built into it as it's from an f-body. The wiring is very easy to do and then you can have full control of fan speed and temperature setting not to mention you can compensate the idle when the fans are commanded on so you don't get that stumble when the load of the fans hit the charging system.

For the buttons on the wheel there are some specific parts you need to make the wiring work, it's pretty simple, if you have the right parts. For gauges you can get a pod that sits on the top of the steering column, or put them in the center console. For power steering look into an electric hydraulic pump and mount it the frunk, the MR-S pump is a popular one.

I think fans should be on constant + since the coolant keeps heating up even though you've shut the engine off. Have you noticed that sometimes fans are running even after you shut the engine? for such simple setup, fan never ran with constant +12. if the fan were controlled by DME then yes, constant +12 used. DME controlled fan is usually timed under 1 minute with engine off and it's only when extra cooling really needed. otherwise, fan went off right away

It only makes sense to run the fans on a constant 12 to cool after u shut off if you have a electric water pump so the pum and the fans would run when the engine stops with a manual water pump it wouldn't make sence to have the fans running after the engine turned off because the hot coolant would be sitting still in the engine

To each their own I guess. Since the LS1 engine was not really meant for cars like this Porsche 996 with a rear engine setup. Space is just super tight and no wonder the starter motor heatsoaked with the exhaust pipes being literally next to it without any heat shielding. I wouldn't do it personally, but hey, still excited about possible solutions to these kinds of problems.

The noise and harsh ride would do me in. I'm not 15 anymore. I like quiet, smooth cars. I love Porsches, I've owned a 911 and a 928S and there's not a chance I would ever be interested in an abomination like this. Buy a Corvette if you want something with an angry sounding LS (I've owned 3 vettes too, including a '72 454 4spd roadster).

Alex, you pour out oil on BLACK paper so reflective metal flakes are easier seen. The Panning for gold pan color is black for this reason.

For the starter the best thing would be to fab up a thin metal heat shield that has an insulating layer of air all around it, exactly like an OEM heat shield. Also these look so much better with the rear bumperettes removed like yours has been!

Heat shield will fix it. I had the same issue with an 84 cj that had the 4.3 vortex swap. I kept getting stranded because the starter would get heat soaked. Shield fixed it.

Keep the manual steering. It gives you the ultimate connection to the road. Just make sure to get the car moving before you try to turn the wheel. You get used to it. This would make a great track weapon. Get it out at Road America.

The Porsche purist thing I get, but you didn’t swap it and decided to fix it and make it right. No issues with that, but I would never do it to a car with a stock and working engine as you would devalue it immediately.

The thing is, one of these base model 996 cars aren't worth much do if you need a big engine repair, an LS swap is a great option. It doesn't need to have a huge cam like this car. It can be a nice, smooth LS that compliments the car well.

Sometimes you buy a car for something other than the resale value. For something less than the cost of a used Honda CR-V, Matt has a car that he will enjoy for years, superb performance and great reliability, at a fraction of the maintenance cost of a stock Porsche 996. (Just ask me how I know about Porsche maintenance...)

I used to work for one of the top engine builders in the country (hemis) and he always primed the oil filters...always. Also, I completely agree with doing a fresh oil change with either a new car or salvage car rebuild. Then, you can be certain that nothing is scratching or gunking up the engine. I was thinking that those plugs don't look like they have many miles on them. Interesting that you were once an MB tech. With that big cam, made certain to keep the timing in check. Another good reason for a tune.

Prefill the oil filter gives oil pressure faster to the engine, so much less metal to metal friction on the first start. Good practice indeed!

The hot start problem is caused by the starter solenoid getting hot and needing more current than the tiny wire coming from the starter switch can provide. Back in the 'old days' we'd mount a Ford solenoid near the starter but away from the header and run the starter wire to it...then direct 12V from the battery to that solenoid which then sends full 12V to the starter when engaged.

To see what the oil filter has collected. You need to press the outer smaller holes with small screw driver. As the oil goes from edge to center. The plastic behind those holes is flowback valve. Dirt is behind it.

So, after being a U.S. only auto owner for all my life I became fed up with the boring domestic offerings. (I’m a Pontiac guy so I have my 02 CETA and an 09 Solstice that I both bought brand new) We tried the new JL Wrangler and it let us down so we traded it in on our first Porsche that we ordered to spec, a 2024 Macan T. Now, this experience with Porsche got me thinking maybe I should get a 718 or older 911, but most of my knowledge is from tinkering with my domestics and was kind of worried about the German powertrains, but now…after watching your vids and realizing that I could possibly find a 911 that would be perfect for me if it has an LS1 swap…oh man, it got the juices flowing! Thank you, Alex, for buying this car and spot lighting it on your channel. It’s badass!
