Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. They can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even from plant-based materials (like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum). Or the Polestar 3 e.g. is using pine oil. And even if you still create a leatherette seat the classic way with petroleum base without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is very little in comparison to how much oil is used for other car parts or how much oil is burned for fuel or heating. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en). So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. Another interesting article is here: www.collectivefashionjustice.org/articles/is-vegetable-tanned-leather-sustainable-lets-do-some-leather-myth-busting#:~:text=Often%20listed%20as%20a%20'pro,the%20method%20of%20tanning%20used. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensfin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6G1f56NbtOlqNk New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2qXiouAbJeIiqM More and more natural materials are rising: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIO2pIt7o9x7etE or kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWLEf42bpMano6c Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIHCdKmCocZ5oqs For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpzNdHSjppaSbqc Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. Depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the first misuse case, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the priority use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down or even murdered on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

@@autogefuehl While I fully agree with you that it is completely unnecessary to use animal skin for car seats, I think OP was just pointing out that the kind of rich people that would buy a Maybach want leather seats regardless because it's got a more premium reputation. Maybe that will change with time
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl Жыл бұрын
Gotcha. There are still rich people who don't care, for sure. But there are also a lot that do care, I know some myself. The most important point however is, that a manufacturer has the obligation to just offer products that provide certain ethical standards. E.g. Mercedes won't put crocodile skin on the vehicle even if the customer asks them to do. But they do the same with cow skin. But what's the difference between crocodile and cow skin, ethically? Yeah, cows are mammals and genetically way more related to us...

The hyperscreen looks like a plastic glass in a Rolls Royce. You can't install such cheap-looking controls in a Maybach. Mercedes really doesn't seem to understand that more screen doesn't automatically mean modern technology. Creepy. At least the exterior design is currently the most coherent in the EQ segment.

I don't get the BS about real leather not being sustainable. Leather is a by-product of meat production. It is literally using something that would otherwise just get thrown away. Doesn't really get more sustainable than that. Meanwhile, artificial leather (now rebranded as "vegan leather") is just plastic. It has terrible longevity compared to real leather.

6:25 I respect Thomas for educating on animal welfare and corporate and customer responsibility. Thomas should make same personal passionate argument everytime he steps into a diesel or petrol car for what local tailpipe emissions are doing for localised wildlife who 'by no surprise' breathe the same local toxic air as humans via the combustion of liquid fuels.... and our children too just as a reminder especially outside our schools. But also why lower income families can't afford an EV for a cleaner standard of living. Why stop at what the seats are made of 'every time'??? Animals breathe aswell and our oil changes and oil leaks also cause disastrous localised damage too. Fossil cars are (toxic air composition alteration devices on wheels) Diesel + Air composition = Nox emissions which physically kill life forms and CO2 which traps heat which warms the planet which destroys Animals habitats globally via melting ice and increasing wildfires...... ...... but the seats.

Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIHCdKmCocZ5oqs For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpzNdHSjppaSbqc Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.

But may I have a similar reply specifically on your research passion on how buying petrol and diesel cars effect localised air pollution and climate change? Assuming If your passion extends to how BEVs can make animals and human lives better via localised tailpipe emissions. It's just that this passion does not come across the channel as much despite climate change threatening more animals lives than the leather industry. All I'm suggesting is you may as well advocate for both. Lots of respect for you Thomas and love the channel. You do great work for the transition to non leather.

6:30 if you care about animals, you care about climate. and if care about climate, you want to recycle leather from killed cows, not just bury it in the ground. I'm not that mad towards so-called "green" (I don't really think they care about nature), but when they have such huge holes in logic, I can't stand that. Like, for example, stop eating meat because it's cruel. Bro, that cow wouldn't even have been born without the farmer. And even if that cow would've been born as her wild relative - it would die so brutally in the claws and teeth of the predator, that any farm death would be a God's gift for it. I know it's a propaganda to make people consume less natural expensive products, but this propaganda could be a little more smart, ich glaube.

The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWLEf42bpMano6c). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6G1f56NbtOlqNk And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKe7loOHnsSAd80 New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2qXiouAbJeIiqM More and more natural materials are rising: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIO2pIt7o9x7etE Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIHCdKmCocZ5oqs For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpzNdHSjppaSbqc Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. "That cow wouldnt even been born" I dont know where this argument / ethic comes from, but how can you justify cruelty by that it is better to experience cruelty than not living at all? @@autogefuehl Mein Godt, danke, ich hat nich erwarteret so lang antwort. Es ist schon zu lesen. Du bist gut vorbereitet, oder? I definitely could see some point of agreement - some could find such materials as velours more comfortable than a leather. I drop the argument of irrelevance of such a precise calculation of the impact on nature anywhere outside Western Europe, because we still need to care and someone should set the trend, especially the industry leader. I see your point on financing non-animal productions instead of animal production, but to agree on it I need to agree on your vegan presupposition, which I just don't agree on - it's a part of a bigger discourse. "Hey if you wouldnt be suffering, you wouldnt be alive" - well yes, literally. Otherwise, you praise nonexistence. What are the boundaries of suffering? What is suffering? What is a "good death" and what is "cruel death"? I can't see a proper definition on the exact level of "suffering" that could give someone a right to decide whether some human or some animal should have been born or stay alive. And that's why I bring the point of comparison farm life with a nature life, which looks more "cruel". Anyway it's a very big discourse for comments to a video about cars. Thanks again for your arguments.
