@@electric8668 Why always this way of bringing back everything to Hendrix ? Two men changed completely the guitar world : Jimi and Eddie. Hendrix opened a new door in the guitar playing, for sure, but without Eddie Van Halen, the guitar world would absolutely not be the same. Tapping, artificial harmonics, violoning, and so many technics have not been taught to Van Halen by Hendrix...Eddie invented a new way of playing guitar, even if Jimi has influenced him.

This actually started as a warm up exercise before they did their gigs at clubs, backyard school parties. While Van Halen was recording their debut album (1978) they decided to record this solo just in one take. From 1978-2015 Eddie would either add parts to it or take parts away.Never played it the same way.He experimented with different sounds he could get from it.He even built that guitar himself with various guitar parts

Edward Van Halen changed the entire rock guitar scene and turned it on it's ear with the original version of Eruption. It was a 1:42 guitar master piece and was less then 2:00 minute solo. He continued to change guitar playing until his death. R.I.P... His son Wolfgang will continue on from here.

I agree with you on Wolfgang man. He's a whole different flavor of rock talent... it's nice to see the van halen name will be carried on with high level talent but also in a whole new way. Listen to the album version, this live 'for the fans' version is basically an anthology of Eddies most famous guitar licks intertwined into the Eruption solo. On the album Eruption serves as the intro to their cover of the Kinks - You Really Got Me, it's shorter, tighter, and it is amazing, like people remember when they were the first time they heard Eruption (high school parking lot in my '68 firebird).

The first 5 Van Halen studio albums each have a short guitar interlude/solo by Eddie. The first and most popular is Eruption. This live clip is a mixture of those solos. Spanish Fly, Cathedral and Tora! Tora! Among them. EVH revolutionized guitar playing by introducing Rock to classical techniques like hammer-ons and pull-offs. RIP

It's hard to overstate Eddie's influence. When this first came out, every kid I knew who played guitar -- wanted to play THIS. And what's intresting is how much classical music is in this (Bach, mostly) and, at the same time, it's the ultimate in rock music (the swagger, the distortion, the tone and of course -- that shit-eating grin). He was one-of-a-kind!

I grew up a Van halen fan together with all the hard rock and heavy metal from the 80's and 90's. This solo still amazes me every time. He gets so many sounds out of that guitar that he built and continually modified himself. At times it sounds like a guitar, a synth, violins as he taps pulls, picks and beats the guitar. It almost wants to talk at times. Just mind blowing. He invented so many techniques and has been copied over and over. In this solo you hear so much from both eras of Van halen (with David Lee Roth and later with Sammy Hagar- shown here as a singer). There are even parts that sound like classical music on an electric guitar... Crazy good. He's self taught and plays so many instruments.

Everyone under the sun has reacted to this one, which no doubt is a stellar testimony of his guitar prowess over the years. You would have been better served to have reacted to the original "Eruption" from their self titled debut album "Van Halen". It clocked in at 1:47sec. That is what the world first heard in 1978 and it immiediatly went Platinum. At that point no one had ever heard anything like this before. No one since Jimi Hendrix would revolutionize not only the playing of guitar, but how guitars were built, how guitar amplifiers were built. Whole industry trying to recreate his sound from that first album and other periods of his career. How's that for influential?! "I'm The One" is a no brainer for your next Van Halen song from that iconic debut album called Van Halen.

Eddie Van Halen invented the techniques he uses on the guitar. As he said in an interview….”I thought of them. Perhaps someone else did to, or even before me, but I didn’t know about them from anyone else except myself”. Before EVH no one played with both hands. Not just holding the chords with one and picking with the other, but truly picking with BOTH. He changed the way people played guitars.

I feel bad for you kids. I was the first child born into a small family of 60 and over in 1964. So Granny sang Dean Martin, Hank Wms., Roger Miller, and loved Satchmo. Mom sang R&B Black Gold & Elvis, and we watched Soooooouuul Train and The Midnight Special.. And Uncle Al sang "Suwanee River" accompanied by a little bell to amuse me. And Van Halen was our favorite in high school. And P.S. David Lee Roth was wearing chaps with no pants once in a concert here in KC, and we were on the floor, eighth row. Surreal.

Great reaction!! I've seen this countless times, and it still amazes and engages me - RIP Eddie, a master at the axe! Just so you're clear Polo - this solo wasn't just the song Eruption (which you should check in it's own right for context). This was no less than 3 other 'songs' Eddie has done, plus a bunch of other noodling. The first part when he's sitting down is a song called 316 (so named as it's the birthdate of his son Wolfgang, off the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge) - beautiful & calm ditty. Then it goes into a section of Eruption (most of the parts where the tapping technique is involved is from this). The section where he's controlling the volume knob to make he guitar sound like a violin is from a song called Cathedral (off Diver Down). Yes, this is a self-indulgent showcase of most of what made Eddie great - his guitar pyrotechnics was game changing and genre defining! He may not have created all those techniques, but he sure as hell mastered them! Cheers.

Random aside, Pantera is a million times better live than they are on record. More of a hip hop head / Primus / jazz / Aphex fan, heard records was like meh, went and saw Pantera live was like HOT damn that thumps hard.

What was great about Eddie is he could do anything on a guitar. I heard at least 6or7 different instruments. He could make it play anything. He’s up there having the time of his life. RIP and thanks for making my youth just that much more enjoyable. 😁

What you said about re-listenability is why classical guitar albums and even guitar only albums like Satriani don't sell as well as an album with 4-6 min songs on it... But seeing this kind of show case is exactly what I want when I pay to go to a concert.

Someone else has probably already commented this, but to be sure: from about 6:50 'til 8:50 is Cathedral. And from about 11:15 'til about 12:35 is Spanish Fly.
