Tip for new players: Don't take your hand off the throttle during the take off roll... if your friction is not set properly you may get the situation where the throttle vibrates away from the full power setting and towards a lower power setting, you don't want that at the best of times let alone hot and high.
@rhysdinnis35337 ай бұрын
This reminds me of the time I was in a crappy old plane and the throttle friction was rusted and didn’t work. I didn’t notice, and as I took my hand of the power after we took it, it slipped all the way to idle. Let’s just say I won’t let that happen again.

JR you looked like you had a death grip on the yoke on climb out. Use that trim control. If you're having to use more than 3 fingers on the yoke you are out of trim. Notice your CFI's fingers on the yoke at the 7:00 minute mark. Never take your hand off the throttle during climb out to a safe altitude. Just my thoughts. $12K for a Cherokee 180? Ridiculous lol.

CFI here who used to own a flight school. That is a $50k airplane all day long to a flight school. If I were you and didn't have my Private or Instrument, I would put dual G5's, GMA345 and a GNX375 and do all my training in that thing. Vacuum systems suck and in that heat its only a matter of time before it fails. That is a perfect training and you really found a diamond in the ruff.

The avionics is more expensive than the airplane is worth why waste money on this get an airplane that’s already outfitted
@grayhawkflighttraining40442 ай бұрын
@ I’m thinking $24k in equipment and another $10k in installation. As I said, that’s a $50k plane all day long and with another $35k you now have a kick ass trainer to get all of your ratings in. When you’re done, sell it for $$75k and he makes $40k.
@reefkeep22 ай бұрын
@@grayhawkflighttraining4044That might true, but you don't need kickass trainer, you just need a trainer, this is very limited trainer it was never meant to be anything more. An good annual should have made sure all the switches had labels. Check around for a used eyebrow for the instrument panel, plastic trim where it is missing around the windows and change the plexiglas in the storm window. Great deal, and always look for dry country planes.
@tedstriker7547 ай бұрын
I think the paint is fine, polish it up. What needs work is the instrument panel. The first thing I'd do is get a good label maker. Then rearrange the instruments into the basic "T" six pack arrangement. That scattered, smothered, covered, & chunked arrangement it has now would drive me crazy. I had an old Debonair that had that mess of a panel, and I fixed it. So much better.

The Cherokee 180 was a tremendous deal from start to finish! Well done guys JR Aviation, hit the jackpot again. As for the panel and other upgrades, IMHO you should definitely get the avionics upgrades along with a good autopilot and a combination GPS / NAV radio in order to do RNAV and other precision instrument approaches. I'd reccomend the Dynon SkyView HDX family of panels. Finally, I'd spring for new carpets, seat covers and interior upgrades. I wouldn't get a custom interior or anthing excessive. Just stick to simple upgrades and you will make money when you sell it on.

My first airplane was a Piper Colt, built by a AP/IA who taught at a technical school. Paid $7500 for it, put $4000 into it getting it airworthy. Flew it from Hartford CT to Pensacola FL when I sold it to…wait for it… a technical school for AP’s. Thought it was fitting to carry on the prior owners legacy. Used that money to buy a Cherokee 140 and brought it back to life. Sold that and bought my latest Cherokee 140. They’re really easy to work on, cheap to insure and operate and every AP knows how to work on them. You have a great plane there and hope it brings lots of joy!!

Hi guys, what a great 3 part series, and you picked up a nice plane. I'm part owner of a 1964 Cherokee 180. There are a couple of items that have big impact on price paid. I don't recall in the videos hearing about 1. aircraft logbooks...missing history creates a big price discount 2. time until next engine overhaul. If an overhaul potentially costs $40k, and engine is close to needing an overhaul, expect aircraft sale price to reflect this. Did you receive full 60 year history of maintenance logs? How much time until next engine overhaul? Curious if that's why the previous owner was willing to accept under $20k in the first place.

Aviation Troll Kings 🤣 Kidding. Been enjoying this series. What a steal! Personally, I’m not as obsessed about the appearance. Only expense I would add would be some type of GPS. 650 or 750 at this stage. A good engine monitors not a bad idea either. That’s it. Auto pilot if you wanted to make it a cross country plane. Detailing the outside and getting rid of any oxidized paint. Polishing it up. That would give new life. A nice clean panel would be a value ad if you’re doing an avionics and engine monitor upgrade. I would do all those three at the same time.

Don't know if you guys looked into that amp meter to see if it's just a defective gauge or not. But it shouldn't be pinned to +40 amps especially with a new battery! If the amp meter is working right then your cooking your new battery, over charging it. Possibly due to a bad voltage regulator (internal to the alternator or external). If the voltage goes high enough your gonna also start cooking your radio, transponder and who knows what else. Not to be a know it all, but check the charge voltage with engine up at speed, not idle... 2000 RPM there abouts... It might be what's also causing your fuel gauge to bounce around as well... Not something to ignore. Seen a few old 70's / 80's Porsche 911's with bad voltage regulators causing short battery life and other various electrical issues... 40 amps is a ton of power and can even cause a fire...
