The jumping off the board is the worst. I have had so many good fish jump off the board and out of the kayak! I wear half gloves with grippers on the palm to help with smallmouth otherwise I get a spine. Also to help with either the mouth closing or to get the tail to sit down, as dumb as this sounds, tickle their belly. A legendary Dale Hollow Lake guide taught me that. At first I though he was joking but he was 100% serious. He does it for photos to get the tail to relax. It seems to work lol but who knows.

thanks for the tips. I was able to find a bit of a better rhythm to it last week. I'll have to try the tickle the belly trick. Sounds preposterous, but I'm willing to try anything lol
