Fr. Nichols has tapped into an important connection between faith and language. My mentor in neurosurgery, Eben Alexander, a devout Methodist, found that patients that had lost conventional speech often retained hymns and sometimes prayer. They are anatomically related to speech in the brain, and can trigger spontaneous speech. Apparently unresponsive patients can sometimes tell you what you did in their presence when they were “out”.
