First Great Lakes cruise ship of 2024: Viking Octantis April 28, 2024

The first Great Lakes cruise ship of the 2024 season is the Viking Octantis. She is seen here upbound to Alpena in Port Huron on April 28, 2024 after spending the day in Detroit. She is 665 feet long and was built in 2022. She has been seen on our Great Lakes and New York Harbor cameras since 2022 when she made her debut. She'll be in Duluth towards the end of May, usually the Viking ships don't try Lake Superior until then.

I've never been on a cruise ship. Looks like an awesome awesome ship. Question though. Why would anyone ride a cruise ship in a lake? That'd be like flying in a commercial passenger plane.....in a wind tunnel. Get out on the ocean if you're going to spend what is probably thousands of dollars per person on a ticket. Not sail around in a lake.

My guess is you've never been on any of the Great Lakes! They're like little oceans, especially Lakes Michigan, Huron and definitely Lake Superior. There are also several wonderful destinations around the region that the cruise ships stop at for a day, for the passengers to enjoy, the majority of whom are from other areas of the US or other countries. I've seen interviews with passengers who were from California and Utah, just off the top of my head, and they loved the experience of seeing the Great Lakes.

And Viking definitely would not be offering these cruises if they weren't profitable, either! They're getting plenty of takers, this is their third season, and they actually have two ships in the area once Viking Polaris arrives later this spring.
