The kidney I donated was a healthy kidney - I underwent the same standard living kidney donor evaluation as those not living with HIV. I passed all their tests. Some people living with HIV have kidneys removed for clinical reasons (cancer, etc.). My kidney removal was just elective for donation. Also people living with HIV have received kidney transplants since the early 2000s using organs from donors that did not have HIV; with one functioning kidney, these patients have just as good an outcome as transplant recipients not living with HIV.

@@ninamartinez2422 I always assumed that you would need both kidneys because of the medications you were on. Can you take bipolar med's if your taking HIV med's? You look really familiar, were you on Jennifer Vaughn's channel on an interview? She's from 🎅 Cruz CA? 🤔

I'm curious how the doctors did the transplant, wouldn't that be incredibly dangerous for all the surgeons involved? Did they use robots to do everything, or did they just wear extra protective clothing?
@OMGshinyobject
@OMGshinyobject 5 жыл бұрын
Not dangerous. Surgeons don't mix their blood with the patients lol. Also did you know you can be in relationships with hiv+ people and not catch it by taking pre exposure prophylaxis. People with hiv aren't dangerous we understand so much about the disease and it has been cured in two patients via bone marrow transplant. :)
@jscix
@jscix 5 жыл бұрын
@@OMGshinyobject It can happen if you get blood on any skin, and have even an imperceptibly sized cut. If it gets near your nose, eyes, mouth etc. No, I didn't know about "pre-exposure prophylaxis", that's pretty incredible really. I actually didn't even know HIV was as treatable as it is until I saw this video. I pretty much thought it was still a death sentence until last night, and I actually do tend to keep up with current scientific events, so I imagine most people don't know this.

People living with HIV who are in care and treatment and who maintain an undetectable viral load of NO risk of transmitting the virus to their sexual partners. We have come a long way in the care and treatment of HIV and people living with HIV can expect to live a normal life span and to everything anyone else can do as long as they take care of themselves. As a women living with HIV 34 years, I have even had restorative cosmetic surgery. There is no risk to the surgeons or nurses. Providers use universal precautions with all their patients, working with someone who is living with HIV is no different. You cannot get HIV from touching someone. HIV dies when it hits the air. Science rocks.

@@jscix hey dont feel bad for not knowing, I'm a biochemistry research assistant part time and work in pharmaceuticals the other part time so it's tangentially something I would know about more than the average Joe. It's so so important to remove the negative stigma that surrounds HIV, a tream of surgeons on prophalyxis and sterile technique would be exceptionally safe but even the average Joe who sleeps with someone who is HIV+ who keeps up with their treatment is also at extremely low risk. Direct acting antivirals didn't exist in the 80's and 90's which is why the virus was much more serious to have back then.

So not only does all of the organ has to match but the strain has to match That’s intense
@ninamartinez2422
@ninamartinez2422 4 жыл бұрын
Two misconceptions here: 1. paired kidney exchanges and incompatible kidney transplant programs make matching not a requirement in transplantation. 2. In HIV-to-HIV transplantation, the HIV doesn't have to be matched, but donors and recipients are grouped together by their treatment regimen to ensure that the recipient's treatment regimen can control the donor's virus if transmission occurs.
