There is a giant meme in Hollow Knight speedrunning where none of the runs count because they forgot to talk to elder bug. There is also a mod specifically to make the text that tells you that you enter dirtmouth be replaced with "Elder Bug is a cool dude" There is also Elderbug% where you speedrun giving Elderbug the delicate flower

Personally I like when reactors pause and rewind if they want to. Because I watch reactors for their reactions, and pausing to talk means less chance of you missing something about to happen, or forgetting what you want to talk about by the time the thing is done. So hey, love your reactions style!

The roar you hear when you're beaten up in Deepnest is actually a deleted boss. Deepnest was supposed to have a main boss, like all the other areas, and it was an enormous spider. There are 8 "people" around that bench, and they were supposed to be puppeted by the spider's 8 legs

Also, remember when you go into the Weavers' Den, the small optional building, and when you're on your way out a Weaver is at the exit? If you look at the footage of that and pause to see the weaver, you'll see that the neck skirt thing that Hornet has is actually just Deepnest fashion

They saved Zote for the money Vengfly King provides for Lantern. Also, small mushrooms don't actually hurt you. You've been killing innocents your entire last playthrough. You need to kill Gruz for Lantern from Sly, to get through Deepnest to get Herrah. The Voice Acting thing isn't a competition, it was organized by a KZbinr to make a fully English Voiced Hollow Knight mod. At least that's what it looks like.

actually, they could probably get through deepnest without lantern, but you need it to get into Peaks without dive. but still, great info!

@@laumotan8862 you could do that, my friend did, but it probably wastes more time than just getting lantern since silverfish can randomly spawn. I do a bit of speedrunning myself and by the time I had to go to Herrah I had enough geo for lantern and other things. Ofc I'm not even close to 30 minutes but still, this is where the real margins are. Thanks for the compliment. I like helping other newer players (although they aren't exactly new).

@@fel524 Entry for peaks needs desolate dive or lantern,we know which is faster. I would say deepnest is probably learnable through a long trial and error on the path by you literally exploring it,learning the route then trying it many times dying and again (using the bench in Queen's Gardens as your bench) and then prob skipping lantern (if it wasn't necessary for peaks,i would say it can save 1 minute or so if it was learned,maybe more cuz of relic gathering and lemm)

Falling with the inventory open makes you fall faster and doesn't stagger you when you land (as you noticed). However, there was a patch that prevents you from opening the inventory mid air, hence the older patch. Also you should watch the all major glitches speedrun (doesn't have to be on part). It's hillariously broken.

I always thought that the different languages and whatnot in speedrunning was mostly about how unskipable cutscenes take different amounts of time in different languages, and taking advantage of localization-glitches. Like there was one game that, on a particular platform, the opening cutscene played at double-speed.

The reason most games are ran in Japanese is that since they have characters that represent entire words, there are less characters in total, so therefore faster dialog.

I knew elderbugs initial dialouge would change whether you talk to him before you enter the well or not but that lil detail of him reaching out is amazing

Popping in 10 months late to say I like it when you guys rewind ten seconds to watch something again. It's more fun to watch someone's genuine excitement/incredulity at seeing something cool for the first time than to hear them tell us "the first time I saw this I did a double take." I want to see the double takes!

If you notice, they have 5 geo at the end of the run, just barely enough to finish up, the main reason for saving zote. As for not saving and quiting after the dreamers, it's bc the game saves after completing each one, preventing them from simply leaving with ease

I'd love to see you react to the world record speedrun of just the Pantheon of Hallownest. Unlike in this speedrun, the only thing you can do to go faster is to be better at killing bosses, so it's just pure combat skill for like 30 minutes. Also, I can't wait for the mossbag reaction video!

In regards to skipping Crystal Heart, you either need that item or Isma's Tear to beat the game because of Uumuu. There is actually a way to skip CH and get Isma's, that even got a competitive routing by one player, but not only is it insanely hard, with multiple frame perfect skips, but it's probably slightly slower either way.

You can beat it without c dash or ismas but it's not anything speedrun related

Some speed running tips, there is technique where your soul blast spell hits multiple times. It only works if you are shooting from far away and the enemy either takes knock back or is moving away from you it will hit multiple times, with shaman stone it can hit up to 3 times. In the watcher knights fight they do that as they are rolling away to beat them really fast considering their lack of upgrades. Also most glitches used are still in current patch. I'm 90% sure the crystal dash skip is still in current patch, just really hard. I also recommend seeing the major glitches run be that one is just ridiculous and is an experience

Inventory drop in current patch is no longer working in mid air, only persize while step of the clif. Also e-pogo now harder. And that is all was changed about NMG category, that I know

i believe i watched a video explaining the hollow knight kickstarter and they reasoned that the roar at the beasts den was supposed to be for a boss before you got to herrah, but team cherry ran out of time/the goal wasnt reached. if you think about it though, both lurien and monomon are prefaced by their own guardian bosses (watcher knights and uumuu respectively) so it makes sense that it would indicate that there should be a boss before herrah. there is also some concept art somewhere of a big spider, which would also add to the validity of that idea.

I dont think the Queens Garden Acid Skip has been patched out, but I havent tried on current patch. It is DUMMY difficult though.

@@oliviapg I don't think so. If you have isma's tear you can't do it, so if you (or others) have been trying it with that, that's why it isn't working (I believe that's because isma's "safe in the water"/swim animation starts higher up than the hitbox of the acid, but I"m not sure)

You might want to watch fireb0rn's reaction of the then world record NMG speedrun. He's a speedrunner who had the world record for a while so he understands the run in-depth and his commentary is very interesting. From that commentary, it seems like the difficulty in this run comes from optimized movement and geo management (having the right amount of geo at the right time). I haven't watched many of your videos, but if you beat all of the bosses radiant and the pantheons with bindings then the fights themselves probably won't be difficult for you, but I imagine you'll have to learn a different style of fighting given how few charms and upgrades you have and given that the goal isn't to beat the bosses, but to beat them as quickly as possible (for example, it's not enough to use vengeful spirit, but you want to maximize the number of times you hit the bosses with each use of the spell).

Just to note, this run will have been done on an older patch of the game. Lots of these skips were patched in current patch and it's accepted that the older patch is the "speedrun" patch where QGAC, shadeskip and the explosion skip are still not patched out.

when you cast vengeful spirit and there's an enemy running away from you it will get hit multiple times cause of the active hurtbox the spell has while it's moving also, some bosses' hp scale when you upgrade your nail, so they don't do it

It's an old video, so you might have already seen it, but few speedrun categories has dark Deepnest. Yes. Speedrunners can't see anything, yet they just do it anyway. Also btw, if you take any hazard damage (i.e. spikes etc) in dark, you are respawned back to the beginning of the room, unlike when you actually have lantern. That's because if you were in the middle of the dark room as a casual player, it would be hard to navigate. So, basically if a speedrunner takes hit in dark room, they don't just get a respawn near the spikes and lose few seconds. They lose A LOT, because if they hit the spikes at the end of the room, they are transported to the beginning. Also I really recommend watching TAS as well, if you haven't already. Either Jarlyk or Constructive Cynicism. They both have great TASes.

Just for information, you can't save and quit from dreamers, because save will be near the dreamer, not on the bench. That is why they did not save-quit

You are correct. Kanji based text is often faster. There are many speedruns where playing in Japanese will save you a few seconds over the run over playing in English.

There are a lot of cool sequence breaks in this game that dont appear in yhis speedrun bc they simply arent faster, but you can skip getting vengeful spirit, dash and Crystal dash (Yeee you know this)on top of what we saw here (obviously not in the same playthrough), if I am not missing any

There is a newish TAS that is pretty cool to watch! There's also a new route that is super cool and makes use of quite a few skips that weren't practical before as well as new tech that was found in the last couple months (showcased here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJ6sgGCLeL94bNE). The runs/routes that include dark deepnest are also super impressive, but I'm sure you've seen them by now given that you're interested in the game and watch a few runners. The TAS and new route are just the more "missable" innovations in the speedrun that would definitely be worth watching! I loved the let's play, looking forward to watching the rando series as that's one of my favorite hobbies in hk now that I'm finished with most of base game (last few pantheons and trial 3 are roadblocking me lol)

This is about a year late, BUT, most speedrunners use Chinese because it's much faster than other languages. In long runs it can save MINUTES

Months later, and probably you know already. Why don't get a nail upgrade? Not even the True Ending Speedrun does it. Each time you get a nail upgrade, bosses escalate their maximum health. Their escalation is lower than the nail upgrade, of course, but that means that spells do less damage, because they don't escalate. True Ending has the runner buy Shaman's stone and get the Vengeful Spirit upgrade. Those two combined demolish bosses, because their maximum health remains the lowest

If you guys are already loving this speedrun I’d suggest checking out Fireborn’s KZbin channel. Specifically his hunter vs runner challenges. 1 person is the runner, and they’re trying to beat the game as fast as possible. He has 1 hour and 30 minutes to do it (one of the first speedrun numbers when the game came out) and there are 4 hunters who’s entire goal is to prevent Fireborn from beating the game. There are extra rules like the hunters have around 4 “lifelines” three of their lifelines, they can ask Fireborn where he is while the fourth one is details how many dreamers he has released.

I guess it might be because im not a huge fan of reaction content but the fact that you pause and go back feels more genuine than not because that's what youd do with friends! You miss shit otherwise! Idk im just a big fan of "good friends (in this case of course, couple) have a genuine and stupid good time" so just seeing a video of people saying wow over and over in a formulaic way is so off-putting because it feels scripted and almost disingenuous....
