26:15 The reason to why the TAS only opens the yellow boxes is because said yellow boxes contribute to the campaign's percentage. There's a couple of boxes hidden in each (non-boss & battle only) level. If you find one, you not only have to open it, you have to also grab the trophy that comes out of it. If you only open the yellow box without grabbing it's trophy, the game doesn't count it as acquired. 1:00:02 Wrong. The true hero of Subspace is Dedede. If you look at the cutscenes, at one point before or during the story, he discovers Ganondorf's plans and sets off to recover as many characters as he can before the inevitable happens. He managed to acquire Luigi by the time we get introduced to him and steals Wario's transport which carried a trophyfied Peach/Zelda and Ness. At his castle, he uses two badges he made to put on the trophies and sacrifices his own to put it on Peach/Zelda. Unfortunately, Bowser raids Dedede's castle, burying him alongside the trophies of Luigi and Ness as Bowser steals Peach/Zelda, unaware of the King's badges on the trophy. The heroes catch on to Bowser but the latter escapes with the kidnapped trophy, and upon inspecting it, Kirby accidentally sucks the badge. Time skipping to the Subspace levels, the badges were ticking timers that, once the area was consumed by Subspace, reached 0 and revived the trophyfied characters. The first ones were Luigi and Ness, who then revived Dedede and went on to save the other characters dispersed around Subspace while the last one, Kirby, is revived by the badge he sucked back at Dedede's castle. Another thing to note is that Sakurai voiced Brawl's Dedede, so technically, Sakurai (using Dedede as a vessel) saved the world of Smash Bros.

32:42 I'm so hyped that character storage was used in this TAS - I documented it years ago and always thought it was a cool trick which wouldn't get used. To explain how it works - by hovering over a level and inputting a direction and A at the same time, the game bypasses character selection screens and so the character list never gets updated in memory. This only works for levels without cutscenes as cutscenes update the character list after they finish. You can see this glitch in action at 31:04 or 32:55 by going frame by frame, and you can see that The Lake is hovered over for a few frames before going back to The Ruins and bringing up the difficulty select screen (something which normally doesn't happen until repeat playthroughs of the stage), indicating that the glitch was performed successfully!

TAS speedruns are my absolute favorite kinda speedrun to watch. They are so much fun and so entertaining. The fact that this is all theoretically possible and isn't cheating is always interesting to think about when watching it. Obviously, there's no human that could ever do this, but it's still "possible." idk it's fascinating to me
@kasagrim7215 Жыл бұрын
Just imagine the type of gamer who would somehow get these chances and become the one and only and was like “I just wanted to play my game”
@duffman18 Жыл бұрын
So so many speedrun TAS techniques that were thought to be "impossible" for humans to achieve, have eventually been achieved by humans. Never underestimate the dedication and obsession of speedrunners. Look at stuff like the 2D mario games for example, the modern human runs of those incorporate so much stuff that was thought impossible to do, and now everyone HAS to do it to even be competitive. We're talking frame perfect inputs time after time after time after time in every level. The stamina required for it is insane, as is the nerves of steel necessary when they reach the end of a run that'll be the new world record and they KNOW it'll be the new world record and they have to somehow keep their cool and continue to do these frame perfect inputs while under immense pressure. The ultimate clutch performance. Kinda reminds me of when Hungrybox won EVO. Cos he was mere frames and pixels away from losing, at multiple points throughout the tournament. And yet somehow he always managed to survive even under the highest pressure. You can see when he wins, just how much relief there is because he was desperately holding on the whole time and had pure focus, the kind that's absolutely exhausting to do, and so he ended up just completely letting go, unclenching, the moment he won, and it was awesome to watch. Speedrunners though at least have literally tens of thousands of chances to succeed. Hbox had basically one chance and still pulled it off. But yeah speedrunners play the games tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of times, just for a few dozen or so runs out of those hundreds of thousands to become world records when they happened, only for new world records to quickly overtake them and so they have to start from the beginning again and do tens of thousands of new runs before they get their next world record. Especially for games like Super Mario Bros, where the any% runs are less than 5 minutes long, it's incredibly easy to reach hundreds of thousands of attempts. And that's outside the time they spend practicing individual sections of individual levels to get all their frame perfect tricks down so they can do them for real in the runs most of the time.

It seems like a common misconception is that rng manipulation, like in the case of getting bombs exactly when you need to, is a TASer using hacks or modifying code or something, but it's actually an extremely calculated thing you can do in many games strictly without modifying anything. Games often have code in place where player input has a direct or indirect effect on rng, and there are several ways in which you can use your inputs to get proper rng. I am not 100% positive what tactic the game designers used, but based on the frequency and perfect timing of getting the bombs, I would imagine that input has a very direct influence on the rng of item drops. One way in which this could have been implemented is that say you hit an enemy with Yoshi's nair and it drops nothing. Now go back and input the nair one frame before you did previously. It dropped a star wand this time, so now you repeat this again until you get a bomb drop, all while hitting the enemy at the exact same frame as you did before, you're just pressing A at a different frame, but this input directly effects rng so there is a different outcome. When I was made tases, sometimes in certain games you can use inputs that do absolutely nothing and it would effect the rng, so in a platforming game like Mario you can be pressing the jump button while already airborne and even though it has no effect on literally anything at all, it has an effect on rng. Maybe he's pressing the d-pad mid-air, or pressing jump after already using his double jump, or moving the joystick one degree differently. My point is that he's not doing any hacking or modifying the game in any way to get perfect rng in order to constantly get bombs when necessary, he's very tediously choosing his inputs wisely in order to get perfect rng. He may be looking at the code itself and determining on a mathematical level what to specifically do in order to manipulate rng rather than brute forcing it like you often have to do, because if he isn't doing something like that then this is one of the most tedious tases of all time.

1:03:15 a seed is only the starting value of the rng sequence, for simplicity's sake lets say there are 384 values (off hand can't remember exactly how many there are). 384 because 1 in 384 is chance of pulling a bob-omb, lets suggest you need value 384 to get a bob-omb, the rest are other items. So you'd start the Seed at 384 and immediately on frame 1 pull a bob-omb. The next frame it generically increases by 1, although this is then changed also by any other thing happening on screen, as frame 384 could also mean a specific mob decides to change direction, this also adds to the rng value, when you land, the amount of particles sent up is defined by the rng, but then the amount of particles also affects the rng so if you made 5 then rng increases by 5 etc. So on frame 2 your rng value may be 8 or 10. Its even more complicated than that as there's more like millions of rng values, some of them have 2x bob-ombs within frames of each other, so being able to pull 2 bob-ombs back to back won't work on a large number of rng values or seeds but possible on others. In short every single bob-omb pull in this run was a grind to find the exact RNG needed by putting in additional inputs which do nothing to gameplay but add to the rng count. The ONLY bob-omb pull which was generated by seed is the very first one, and a "good" seed would have been chosen to get multiple bob-ombs quickly at the very start of the game. To get the next stage to immediately pull a bob-omb would have meant the TAS'er got to the correct RNG value on the last frame of the previous frame so that frame 1 of next stage is a bob-omb pull. Knowing this adds to the insanity of this run. Great stuff

The topic was brought up around an hour and fifteen minutes in, but the backrolling isn't necessarily because brawl characters are slow. My friend and I got curious around the section when they were playing as marth and he was slower than we remembered, so we looked it up and apparently subspace emissary modifies properties of most characters. To quote the wiki, "The physics of many (if not all) characters are also tweaked slightly. In general, characters run slower, fall faster, and jump better than in brawls". I'd be willing to bet that's part of the reason we see rolling instead of just running, though just people being slow in general is a part of it for sure.

51:22, there are several ways to manipulate luck, each time rng is called the rng is advanced, so what TAS can do is generate enough rng calls to get the outcome it needs. Since games use pseudorandom rng, knowing the algoritthm and the current rng value how much rng calling is needed for the desired outcome. There are also brute force methods, call rng, check if outcome, if not outcome load state do something else, try again.
