First Impressions: New Balance SC Trainer V2 | Better or Worse?

I believe most shoe companies are now focusing on daily trainers than can be used as race shoes because of the success of the Saucony ES 3. Which is great news for the runners. It eliminates the need for a 4th pair of shoes in their rotation. It won't stop us from buying more shoes though. 😃

Appreciate your honest review and not just kissing the ring of the manufacturer. I think the irony is soo many shoetubers complained about the weight of the v1, not realizing its purpose wasn't a fast day tempo shoe. Now they get the weight reduction and miss what made the v1 an outlier which was the insane stack height. Maybe ill try v2 next year when its on sale. Thanks again for highlighting what I presumed would have been the case between the 2 shoes.

Hey Emily, I bought the SC Trainer v1 as a birthday gift to myself. As someone with plantar issues, your content influenced this decision. I’m soooooooo stoked! Gotta say though, even if the v2 is different, if you’re comparing it to the Endorphin Speed 3, it may still be an excellent shoe. Might try it next year when I can buy it for much cheaper here in the Philippines lol

Kudos for the honest review! I also love the V1, it's really a magic shoe. V2 looks like a different shoe with the same name. I disagree on aesthetics, the mint green color way of the V1 is beautiful.

great intro, don't need to say a word 😂. I actually really like the v1 upper, just did a 19k long run with two nasty blisters I got when trying a new shoe this week, but the v1 nicely holds my foot without too much pressure on those spots.

Emily you used the perfect word to describe the v1 = MAGIC! There are so few shoes that stand out from the crowded pack of daily trainers. Yes it's not perfect but I advise folks to pick up V1 while you still can so you can experience the magic before they are gone from the market. Keep up the outstanding work.

The V1 was almost perfect but with minor BIG details such as the tongue making contact with the ankle as well as the collar. I really hope they dont screw the shoe.

Thanks for the great video- I tried on the V1 and felt like all the foam was under the heel and was felt pretty flat under the forefoot to me ( as a forefoot striker - was not for me) If I remember correctly that was a critique you had about the Triumph 20. Although the V2 has les foam - I hear there may be more under the forefoot- curiosu to hear your thoughs there... thanks again

I think a little lower to the ground makes it more stable cause I rolled my ankle couple times in the SC V1 can’t wait to get my hands on it! I retired 3 pairs of the SC V1 already 🙈

Agree. And from this video, although Emily still like it, sounds like it has been different. If it’s more like Speed 3, I’d go for Speed 3, which has discount. And PowerRun PB last long than NB form. My rebel die every 10K.

This kind of reminds me of what Saucony did with the Endorphin Speed. Versions 1 and 2 were fantastic, naturally speedy shoes, but in version 3 it lost some of that speedy magic and now is just more of a daily trainer.

Great review! Hot take i totally agree with you, the midsole of v1 is nicer and bouncier but v2 is way more stable and runnable and versatile. I would rather be more stable and have a more versatile shoe. I’m all for less foam in 2023. No one needs more then 34mm in the heel.

My only issue with the v1 was the weight and because of that I only used the v1 for easy days. Upper in the v1 rubbed me wrong as well. The v2 I can use for almost every single one of my workouts ranging from easy to race pace and the upper is more traditional and because of that I like it more.

Nice honest review! I appreciate that. I have the v1 and there's no way i was going to buy into the v2 being the same ride with a significant reduction in midsole. There's just no way this was going to be the same ride if you loved the v1 for that max cushion. I haven't tried the v2 yet but I def feel like I would have a similar experience as you. I bought the v1 for what it was and yes the v2 looks great but it's going to be a different shoe as you say. I didn't mind the v1 weight, the upper I loved and of course the max stack was amazing for the legs. I think they are going to go back to a higher 'illegal' stack next year more like v1 for the people, maybe aiming to find some slight improvements without the significant reduction of midsole goodness.

Whoa, you think the new one looks better? Even with the block-y 'new balance' on the sides looking like it was stamped on the shoe by a quality control agent, with no regard to how it 'blends' with the rest of the shoe? I think the loss of the 'magic' you describe has to do with less drop and less stack on the v2. It dramatically changes the roll of the shoe. Better for speed, I suppose, but worse as a daily trainer.

I can’t deal with heavy shoes so the first version was a no even though my ride or die shoe is the rebel v3- love that fuel cell! I am hoping this shoe will last a bit longer though!

Have you tried V1? I’m just like you and don’t like heavy shoes but V1 is just so magical I’ve never experienced anything like that before. You really forget the weight of shoe as crazy as it sounds.

What if I wanted to get a plated daily trainer for my race days since it's cheaper and more durable and I can also use it for everything, would this shoe work (mostly for marathons and marathon pace), or is it just an easy day shoe that's basically an NB 1080V13 but with a carbon plate (soft recover shoes that can’t go at faster paces, but with a plate). I also love bouncy super plush shoes and don’t like firmer shoes More info: I’m 14, the speed I’m expecting to run is probably 4:30-3:30/km and I weigh around 56 kg Thanks

This shoe would be PERFECT for that. This is definitely not just a 1080v13 with a plate. FuelCell is their performance line of shoes and Fresh Foam is supposed to be more plush. I used this shoe for everything from easy days, to tempo workouts to the nyc marathon and I loved it for everything. I can’t recommend it enough

Question for Canadians, are there any stores that allow returns if the shoes have been worn outside? Reviews are great but the only way to decide on a shoe is to go for a run in it. Personally I don't mind that it 'lost its magic' and glad it lost some stack height. I'm now considering the shoe whereas before V1 felt way too tall, at least when I tried it on in the store.

Just got the V2 and love it. Right out the gate, it's lighter and bouncier that the V1 and the upper is a joy. The toe box is roomier than the sock-like fit of the V1. My only only issue is that it's so roomy that it feels too big and I almost want to drop down a half size. I had to wear a thicker sock for my initial run and will tie the laces tighter/lock heel down for my next run, that should do the trick! I loved the cush of the V1 but this V2 is also cushy, has more spring, more volume and feels great with a little energy return from the carbon plate. It really wants to just go with minimal effort.

I just tried the V2 this morning at my local running store and I had the same experience with the fit of the upper. My foot is rather narrow and it felt loose no matter how tight I made the laces. It would have been too short if I went down a size. I was bummed, because it seemed like a fun shoe with lots of bounce and pop. My husband on the hand, loved the fit and ordered one in his size. I think I'll just go back to the Saucony Speed 3.

First Gen FuelCell in their high performance line was too firm (Rebel 1, RC Elite 1), then Gen 2 was too soft (Rebel 2, RC Elite v2) was too soft even though I loved both shoes. Third Gen FuelCell has been absolutely amazing as they kind of split the difference between the first two iterations of the foam.

I get you love the Trainer... (v1) But I cannot understand why it exists. I mean..., there is the Racer that is absolutely awesome for raceday, and I dont feel like the Trainer is needed or gives any benefits as a specific preparation-shoe for the Racer. But I do know that magic feeling "This Is The Shoe For Me". And that counts for a lot!

honestly for someone like me who cant always handle the super shoes, the sc trainer v2 gives me a nice middle ground (esp with the weight cut) of a shoe that I can train in but is also full capable of racing in!

To me,its a totally diff running shoe compared to V1,it shouldn't even share the name. In a training shoe,a few extra ounces is blown out of proportion by most, V1 didn't feel "heavy" to me and i didn't have stability issues(i came into this shoe after the PrimeX so maybe i became used to a high stack). If NB is exiting the supermax stack height after only 1 iteration,thats cool but dont call it the fuelcell sc trainer V2 when the shoe is stripped of its main ingredient from the V1 that made it marketable

Having looked at this shoe for a long time, I can see how v.2 differs from v.1 but for the discount and purpose of the shoe overall, I think I'd lean towards getting the discounted v.1
