The problem with the "This is a Little Total War" argument is that CA is charging "Big Total War" prices. This isn't "Big Total War" value, and it's price should reflect that. Which you do note, but it really needs to be driven home. If CA want to charge like they seem to be planning to, they need to start delivering on the value.

Because they are not promoting Pharaoh as Little Total War as if the entire thing with Saga Total War completely dropped out. We all know that Pharaoh is Little Total War but them promoting it as NOT Little Total War gives them courage to price it this high ... which is a nonsense

Except people will buy it anyway and only then will they complain, giving CA no incentive to lower prices. 99% of the "I swear this is the last time I buy a TW title if they don't get bwtter!" crowd never deliver on their promise, and delivering on their promise is the only way to make CA execs care.

I'm sure the reason why the time period is egypt is exactly because it's so familiar to troy. They can just reuse a lot of assets for their "Little Total War" like they done with total war britannia which was basically a reskin of Attila.

Same, the return of native units (as debuted in the Rome II Rise of the Republic DLC, which is up there as one of my favourite TW DLC's, as well as a feature in the DeI mod), the customizable campaign and the return to a more grounded TW is appealing, but CA should really be pulled back to reasonable prices for the content they deliver... I'd not pay more than 40 for this campaign, and I feel that's rather generous compared to other customers... this is essentially going to need to be a 30 bucks campaign for people to try it out.

It almost reminds me of the weird 'beta test' games Paradox put out for EU4 and Crusader Kings 2. March of the Eagles and Sengoku were very basic games that weren't very well received due to being so bare bones, but they put to the test a lot of the new mechanics that Paradox went on to use in much larger titles. Perhaps they wanted this game to provide the bedrock for the next big Total War. The price is insane though. I think CA needs the next big game to work. Shoving out a smaller title with new mechanics to act as a pilot makes a degree of sense in that regard. Find out what works, ditch anything that is hated, and then go great guns with the big project.

What may save Pharaoh is if they decide to follow a bit in the route of the Warhammer series did with Mortal and later Immortal Empires. Troy and Pharaoh are both set around the start of the Bronze Age Collapse. The borders of the campaign maps both meet in the middle of what is now Turkey. They share similar units, and many similar mechanics. I think seeing a Bronze Age Total War where if you have both games then you can play across a combined map with either the much more historical settings of Pharaoh or the more fantastical gods and monsters settings of Troy. That might be the saving grace to this game in the future. But it's a big if of whether they'll even do it. There's a chance I guess, but I'm not holding out for it.

In WH3 my mummified zombie princess riding animated serpent statue can have a battle with 10 meter tall, four armed, pink demon of the god of depravity on an donut shaped atlantis inhabited by ancient and almost immortal race of decadent degenerates. Take Your pick. I know mine.

The campaign side of things look good, the battles... Well, I've been sceptical of them ever since the first battle displays were posted. The fact that the Egyptian armies on display featured an archery contingent of maybe one fifth of the army - when written records tell us the archer was, at the time, the main/most important soldier of the Egyptian army showed that... Yeah, we're not getting armies where they're even trying to diversify the factions. And unless we see a significant diversification between the armies, I doubt I'm getting this. Which is a shame, because with only three "races" I see plenty of potential for making very distinct army compositions between them. The Hittite chariots were described as heavy and made for actually charging the enemy formation - apply this across the entire army. Make the Hittites melee and shock- oriented, dealing massive morale damage. Meanwhile, the Egyptians try to skirmish and use their archery to actually kill rather than break enemy armies. The Caananites of the time have little records of their military - as far as I know - but we could give them the free slot of good defensive infantry supported by primarily slingers and javeliniers. There is potential there. There is to a degree historical evidence to support very different armies for the different "races". And the fact that we don't seem to be getting that is so frustrating. If I were to pick a time period and place, it'd probably be Europe 1500-1700, with a focus on Pike and Shotte and the wars of religion. It's a time period of so much upheaval and so much potential, and I'd love to see it featured in a full scale total war game.

It's shocking how over 10 years after Rome 2 total war they still haven't added any of the most requested features from historical total war fans, far as I can tell You still can't customize provinces, apparently. The building options are still stupidly restricted per settlement, instead of the much deeper building selection available before Rome 2. Instead we seem to be getting a bunch of gimmicky stuff imported from Troy total war. And I wouldn't be surprised if units still burn and hack their way through gates, ruining sieges entirely, instead of just making players and AI build a ram or use siege engines to get into walled settlements. And of course they want to charge the usual price for a campaign map incredibly narrow in scope with very little faction or unit diversity. This entire campaign map was just a tiny corner available in Rome 2. But when it fails like Thrones of Britannia and Troy (and even Three Kingdoms) did, then of course CA will complain that nobody wants their historical total wars anymore. Which isn't true of course, it's just that mods like DEI for the ten year old Rome 2 total war are leagues ahead of anything CA has made since. Will this one even be more moddable, at least?

What I missed in the video is how the battle AI is, given how CA have in the latest Warhammer patches made AI improvements kind of a focus in the patchnotes - but sadly only there, because the "improvements" don't actually exist, in reality they are making the AI only worse and worse with every patch.

You said it feels like a "good old total war", but I'm not so sure about that I recently went back and enjoyed some Medieval 2 TW, honestly the nost refreshing TW experience in ages. No 4-10 slot settlements, no "2-4 settlements regions", cavalry charges are propely devastating One of the big things: you don't play as "King Wilhem the Whatever" who's immortal and is made to stand out, no. You play as Venice, the country. Or Mediolan, or Germany etc. Your king died? What a shame, anyway, next one Despite an awful lot of jankiness it is actually really fun and, again, REFRESHING. This looks like the same game with a reskinned UI, reskinned units and a few "new mechanics" which boil down to "Press x button to get xyz boost"

I wish they'd learn from the Massive success that was Warhammer and try some other fantastical settings. I know there's licensing issues but a LOTR TTW would sell like diesel gas at a trucking convention. A Redwall TTW would be so unique and fun, imagine all these animal warriors clashing, different species having vastly different units/playstyles. An Avatar TTW would make tons of money. You have 4 very distinct factions to choose from. There's a mix of fighers, essentially wizards, and mythical beasts.

CA just made a historical warhammer with this game. The ui is cluttered with tons of text boxes, it looks like a banking program. The province system is still an issue. Building slots should be represented on the map, giving the player real estate to establish their own towns, military outposts, industries and agriculture. Allowing the player to send population around, enslave enemies to add them to your work force, building labor camps and prisons in your remote lands, and local settlements with potential for growth in fertile valleys. The game itself, in theory is actually brilliant, but immediate stat modifiers, rather than letting the player earn titles by physical action kind of limits the players progression. The devs decide how the player has to play, rather than providing the tools and giving the player these freedoms. Battles, i mean to me, that aspect was completely overshadowed. They marketed unit stances so hard, ive yet to see one person mention it. The battles are so small scale with huge banners. Dont even mind blobbing, its the animation assets and unit combat that looks just as bad as empire. Weightless floaty guys swinging and shuffling...nothing from the map translates to battlefield. Feels very table top to me. Drastically missing the total war formula for such a poorly implemented attempt to make a Bronze Age game. Im embarassed for them.

It would be perfect if it was a Shogun 3 or even a Medieval 3 (where you have to become king/queen of a certain country and then expand). Heck, even the egypt setting is cool, but bronze age is meh. Further in the timeline would be cool, with horses and stuff.

@@AbominationalFailure Agreed 100%, I love warhammer 3 total war, but I just want to run around in my feudal experience. Maybe make it so I can create a pagan empire to stand the test of time and perhaps reverse the Cristian tide, instead of always taking orders from the Pope. Also, I hope it expands into the entire timeline of the Middle Ages, not just feudal, but also into the high and late periods just like Med-2. I must have my poleaxes! Hell, they could implement the chaos unit mechanics but with buildings that improve them instead of just instantly creating a whole army of knights. Sort of like how you slowly improve your current recruited rabble in Bannerlord.

Unit diversity is not always the issue. Sometimes your campaign strategy can change massively because you miss a crucial unit type that everyone else has, or that unit type appear in different tech tiers, or your unit have different availability. This can happen in very basic rosters. Byzantine, Egypt and Turks in vanilla M2 all have access to elite horse archers but they play very differently. In Tsardoms 1448 Sicily plays differently because they can train twice as many heavy cavalry as everyone else. Florence lacks a good native pike unit makes it different from all other Italian factions, etc.
