The one thing I’ve always wanted in Total War, I wish military victories carried diplomatic weight. Strangely the best that did this was Napoleon, where if you annihilated an enemy army the the point of embarrassment, they wouldn’t just raise another cheap stack and go again. I absolutely love that Three Kingdoms does this. If you obliterate an enemy formation, it’s hardly like the people are going to tolerate the enemy just throwing more troops at you, and his diplomatic standing will take a hit because everyone suddenly sees them as weak.

I feel like naval battles had the potential to be great. I enjoyed Empire Total War's time period & the map was global, I would have to play several naval battles just to stay competitive. Cannon naval battles are easier to control and more enjoyable: bracketing ships, T'ing Ships, sailing with the wind. Swinging broadsides back and forth, etc... I think naval battles need more work in general though. If land battles are sped up already, why not naval ship speed? Here's some tips I found on Shogun II's naval battles though if anyone's interested, an important caveat is increased reload speed and accuracy on Legendary difficulty though: 1. Auto resolve doesn't count your skill or AI deficiencies (bugs). which makes them much easier to fight. 2. Ships on fire is glitched, make sure to turn off fire at will ALWAYS when on fire, otherwise they will continue trying to fire at the enemy, even when being repaired the code tells them to try to fire at the enemy ship. Additionally, by riding into the wind you can put out the fire or you can ride with the wind behind you and put it out. 3. The wind determines the whole battle. Spend the initial part of the battle riding into the wind so then when the AI approaches you can use it to slingshot yourself towards them. You always want to be upstream of the wind than your enemy to win easily. 4. You can capture a ridiculous number of ships if you play it yourself and win, taking minimal casualties as well. 5. The repair feature repairs hull strength as well as fire when you use it. 6. Although it takes longer, spending time building and researching a navy, then using it strategically easily pays dividends when you can hold all the trade nodes, even on legendary. Most players dislike navies since they don't understand the nuances such as wind and fire. Additionally they can be slow if you don't speed them up. Get some practice on battles you know you will win. 7. Like in multiplayer some ships are totally broken, taking out anything it comes across and more. 8. Naval Battles in FoTS are slightly different than Empire (which are really cool btw). Mostly with cannons the priority should be T'ing the enemy ship. This involves keeping them perpendicular to your broadsides. Additionally you want to be upstream in the wind as well. That being the main objective of naval battles. While FoTS has steam engines, many ships still have sails, and these affect your movement speed going into the wind or not. 9. Once your in the Wind on FoTS, vigorously swing your ships sides back and forth to maximize the amount of volleys fired at the enemy ship. While they will T' your ship when firing, this position actually makes you a smaller target. However, it does make your enemy safe from your counter fire if you aren't swaying sides. Additionally, boiler explosions are caused by too much damage to the side hull or where a volley hits similar to black powder storage explosions in Empire or Napoleon. 10. Use the shot types effectively. if vs wooden, always start with explosive which you can select pre- battle. Fires occur frequently and they eviscerate "soft" hull and under hull. You may want to switch to Armor piercing if it's a thick/large wooden ship, then switch to explosive if proving futile. If vs Ironclads, start with armor piercing shells and switch to explosive if they are routing or have a weak hull this then has a chance to start fires or cause surrender unlike previously. 11. Finally, focus on only one ship at a time to maximize morale damage, and get early routes. SHIPS WON'T STOP routing once they start. You want to "use" your naval units, never just press attack and wait for them to do it automatically. 12. (This is out of order), let medium Bunes (i.e. heavier ships) go first and let bow Kobayas catch up. Sending them first will make them get shot to pieces and route early. You want all your forces together to "gang up on" enemy ships. I really enjoyed naval battles in Empire which is why I'm somewhat experienced. It's very fun to swing your ship back and forth.
@machaiping4 жыл бұрын
IMO, wet navy always have a problem in strategy game, especially one that has either supply cap or maintenance cost. Because if you deploy navy in expect of contested water, but then it turned out geography of the future enemy base/city/settlement does not permit navy, or they didn't use navy but focused solely on land army to attack you through land, then you waste a ton of resource and time that could be use to strengthen your land army, and this lack of land troops sometime can screw you over because you can't dismiss the navy and recruit new land units to counter the threat in time. Air units in strategy games usually doesn't have this problem because they're not restricted by terrain like the navy.

I like naval battle in ETW/NTW too, but i dont play naval battle on shogun until i have siege tower bune 🤣
@kingandcountry12424 жыл бұрын
I always abused capture mechanics to build a massive fleet of bow kobayakawa and medium bune that when stacked can swarm any fleet, especially since enemies seem to divide their navies into 2-3 stacks when it isn’t practical. There is virtually no input cost either besides repairing the captured ships, much cheaper than building (and of course upkeep).

I played lot of naval wars on Assasins Creed 5 ( AS Rogue). Compared to that , naval war on all other game seem bit low-tier.
@N1Zer03 жыл бұрын
Here are some of my ovservation on Fots Naval though: I. CAMPAIGN MODE 1. Don't mind the wind direction. All sails and mast are folded in. All ships use steam engines. 2. Solid shots has the fastest reload rate, armor piercing rounds 2nd, explossive shells are the slowest to relaod and has shorter range. Also Solid shots has the most probability of a Magazine explosion(the thing where a warship explodes and split in half). 3. Trapezoid Range Indicator. You can 1 v 10 any attacking AI fleet, and not take any damage. Very time consuming though. As the 1st sentence suggest. Every ship whether bow chasers, or broadside has the longest range on the furthest edge of the trapezoid range indicator. You can use that trapezoid edge to keep distance from enemy ships in a forward line formation. The A.I. ships will always try to catch you on their center of their trapezoid range. You guys will be running in circles with one until 1 enemy ship is left. As long as you find and be in the inner of that circle, which the enemy fleet will dictate(use the map to see where the inner circle is). Suggested ships: Kanrin maru>kaiten>Kaiyu frigate. *Does not matter if wooden hull or iron clad(all ships in this tier have 750 range). Will not work if enemy fleet has warrior/laOcean/roanoke(850 range, never seen AI have these ships), or kotetsu(1k range). Also won't work on narrow/small maps. Also hard to 4. when attacking, use manual broadside and keep the furthest range 750 ranger ships could have. I do not mean the H button. The manual firing of broadsides will fire its shells its furthest possible, further than the trapezoid range indicator. 750 ranger enemy ships will just be sitting ducks. 5. You guys will hate the kanrin maru and the kaiten. Very hardy and cheap ships. Kanrin maru also has the lowest chance of mag explosion and engine overheat problem. 6. a lucky shot on the center of gunboats and torpedo boats will disable all of their 3 only guns. They are already easy to route or explode but torpedo boats are fun defending a destroyed port. II. Multiplayer 1. Wind direction also negligible. 2. LaOcean/Roanoke/Warrior will prolly win againts lower leveled players that has none of these. 1 kotetsu is not enough. 3. Do not let enemy flagship(kotetsu) dictate your range. Should their be an instance that its half way through the battle and enemy has only 1 kotetsu left, and you got an Ocean/roanoke left. Just rush it, forget manuevering, go straight at him. Kotetsu reverse speed is slow. Do not let him get a bunch of shots kiting at you until you sink or explode or route. 4. Narrow/small maps calls for different strategies compared to open sea battles. I think the use of multiple kotetsu kiting is already well known so, won't be pointing it out.

When it comes out in 2055 maybe. They haven't come out with any total war 3 games, and there are total war games that came before Shogun 2. There is just as much chance for medieval 3 or empire 2. Even more of a chance of something new like Troy. I like Shogun 2 also, I just don't see it coming anytime soon. I'd be shocked if we got it before we got a third entry of something else. I don't think shogun 2 was anywhere close to their most popular game. A lot of brainlets think it's bad because of superficial reasons like "not enough units".

Wu Kingdaissance is basically Make Them Unique but does more and better. More characters, more unique abilities. They added about 200+ unique heroes with unique portraits and over half of them have exclusive abilities and skill trees. They even starts to commission artists to make them original arts and 3D models now instead of just Frankensteining the vanilla portraits together to make new heroes. Don't sleep on Wu, seriously, it's probably the best mod on 3K right now and the modders are super responsive and they update frequently, fixing bugs very quickly as soon as they're reported. MTU started out great and their portraits quality are still unmatched til this day, but the modders honestly take way too long to fix major bugs and their update is at a snail's pace. It's slowly losing a lot of its initial luster. I guess one thing you can say about MTU is that it keeps it closer to vanilla than Wu, which added some changes that people might not find appealing (50% of female generic heroes and certain unique are given a new class called "concubine" which makes them squishy but have powerful support abilities instead of a fighter). Another thing is that yes, some of the older portraits that Wu added look pretty bad by today's standard but they're updating the low quality portraits with each update and they're doing a bang-up job at that

i still want to see CA revisit China again, since its history is a beautiful mess.. the Spring & Autumn - Warring States period has many small states fighting to establish the 1st empire, similar to Shogun 2.. the Mongol period has many different cultures and different playstyles like Medieval 2, from the Mongol, the Song, Liao and Xi Xia to their neighbors like Korea, Japan, Tibet, Dai Viet, Champa, Majapahit,.. and then you can have the fall of the Qing, with the once-powerful Qing have to fight against its neighbors, its rebels (Taiping), the Western powers, as well as regional warlords and turncoat generals - it will be a "survive" mode (like 3K's Han start turn up to 11), instead of the traditional "snowballing" style of play..

The explanatory videos you did about the agents, the way to level up characters, build your towns, the Ashigaru wall etc. really helped me a lot, and got me my first victories in Shogun 2, both in Normal then in Hard difficulty! I know it's probably not as fun or profitable as streaming your campaigns, but I hope you do some videos about the gameplay basics for RoTK, since I'm kinda in the same situation with the game now: I have a basic idea of what I'm doing, but I feel like I'm missing on a lot, and some stuff (like the cities' building, or how to balance your army upkeep with your income) confuse me to no end, even after several hours of playing. Maybe that's just me being bad, and surely there are some other explanatory videos out there, but I always felt like yours were perfectly to the point and really educational, and I would love to have more of that!

Playing all settings on legendary really is challenging and you need to be diplomatic or you will get smashed. It's like using masking tape as a band aid. It only sort of helps. It would have been way better if the AI recognized that your army reinforced theirs (or their city) and added a, idk, 50 points diplomacy the first time you do it and diminishing from there. Gotta love it when you reinforce their army, secure the win for them and they still declare war on you in 2 turns.

I would absolutely love a TW game in india set in about 1500 Its such a huge place with so many different cultures and armies and it literally was a battleground for thousands of years I feel like many people underestimate how fun it would be to have a shit ton of elephants against the elite rajapahut(idk how to spell it) units fighting against the mughal invasion or the timurids There´s just so much potential

I want a total war set in India. I think that could be cool. Or one just slightly after the fall of western Rome where you get to choose between Franks, ostrogoths, visigoths, lombards and former roman local governors

@@thewingedserpent5823 I personally don't like Attila. If you like the Kingdom building aspect of TW you probably won't like Attila. It feels more like a survival game where everything is designed to make the game try and fuck you over. Also the time between turns is ridiculous. Like I remember it taking me 14 turns just to convert like a level 2 village. I'll pass on that noise.

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Even though Attila isn’t that far from 476 in the grand scheme of things, with 3K’s personalistic diplomacy, system of ranks, and political offices it could be a very different game. You could be a warlord and gain conquest legitimacy from things like “the western Roman Empire will allow my tribe to settle in Hispania if we fight the suebi.” Or have legitimacy as king of Italy by having the Eastern Emperor declare your character a patrician of the roman senate. Maybe restore the Western Empire as the Warlord state of Sygarius in Gaul or Julius Nepos in Dalmatia.

Same for me. Not my favorite historical era, but it is my favorite Total War title. I hope they one day make a Rome 3 in the style of 3K. Since Roman history is one of my favorites, and Rome 2 kind of.... feels empty and dull compared to 3K.

4:55 i really agree, TW strategic system(you know, "word map mode") using armies with concentrated units and tactical system based on quadrangle formations doesn't fit WW 1 Front lines, hiding behind covers by individuals and trench warfare on west front, ok even east front with more "moving war" still on tactical level rely on soldiers hiding behind cover and finding good shooting position.Because that reasons WW 2 TW game is even worse idea. Victorian era... mayyyyybe could work (Technically Shogun 2 FoS is in Victoria era but i of course full TW game should have bigger scale and longer period so that may cause some problems with integrating historical reality to mechanics)

Scroll down the comments and you’ll see it was mentioned plenty. Doesn’t bother me, for a time 3K was my favourite Total War, I think that was pretty clear from how much I was playing it, but after a while the simple battles started becoming a bit too boring for me, so I switched back to Shogun 2 being my favourite. That’s what makes us human, being able to change opinions as time progresses. People are free to believe what they want, I could’ve made this video about Shogun 2 and be paid the same amount, but Shogun 2 wasn’t my favourite game at the time so I didn’t. Simple as that.

First Total War game that I played was Shogun Total War, not Shogun 2, Shogun. I love strategy games, but the thing that drew me to the first game back then was, CA wanted to created a strategy game based on the principle of the Sun Tzu Art of War, in which was huge for me back then, cause the terrain, morale and other factors finally played a factor. That said, the period I would see the most, is the Chinese Spring and Autumn period in which Sun Tzu was in.

My first TW game was Shogun 1 and it blew my mind at the time, but Medieval 2 Total War is still my favorite and I think the historical events that come up during it and when things where invented (and fun speeches without a terrible long campaign and very unique faction armies) is still unmatched all these years later. That said Rome 1 is the one I had the most fun playing outright all put together. But in the end misses some of the unique interactions that Medieval 2 has that makes for delightful replay value. Both are very close. I'm not sure 3 Kingdoms will touch any of that, if I want to have fun playing in that era I'll just too often be reminded I could be playing Dynasty Warriors instead. It'll be hard for me to separate that legendary series from this era and think of it only in a very slow Total War game way.

If and when I re-do my top 5 Total War games video Three Kingdoms will be at the top as well, even though it won't be a sponsored video.” And “There were about a dozen of us who were sponsored and we all got to choose our own favourite game. PartyElite chose Medieval 2 for example, MonstersAbound chose Empire, etc. So it has nothing to do with promoting the newest installment.”

But between shogun 2 and FOTS I have 600+ I bought Three Kingdoms and was so confused by it in one custom battle that I kind of just dropped it. Having seen you videos I think I’m going to give it a go after I finish my current FOTS campaign. And maybe dream of a new Shogun game that lets me have proper Siege armies. Even my mangonels which can get +50 accuracy from two master fletchers and two hunting lodges are mostly only good for knocking out towers and gates.
Is it me or does three kingdom seems to have a lot of clutter on screen when you are playing it?

What do you guys think about a 1500-1600 era Total War, about Spanish/Portuguese conquistadores againts the Mesoamerican natives. The Dutch colonies and navy. Land battles would be halberds and pikes, muskets, heavy cav and light cav, cannons. The Catholic church could be a mechanic of the world map also, with the inquisition. I would love to see the naval battles with cannons again.

I'm very interested in Japanese history and it's people, but I'm also not a weeb. Lots of people nowadays love to find buzzwords that make them feel smart and then use them without actually bothering to learn what they mean because learning is hard, a weeb is someone who believes they are Japanese, live like a Japanese person, and think everything that isn't Japanese is bad. I don't apply to any of the 3, you can watch anime and like Japanese history and not be a weeb.

Hope they can change it in the next dlc, with more action in thr Southern side if the map

I still prefer shogun 2 instead ; mayhap cause I don't really get how 3 kingdoms works yet or mayhap cause I simply find it to be a better game overall . Regardless , I'm glad your videos made me know about that game years ago and helped me learning how to play it on normal > hard > v hard and then legendary . If there's anything I'm going to say you disagree with feel free to correct me ; as I said my 3 kingdoms experience has been rather limited so far as I don't quite understand the game and this didn't allow me to get into it a lot . The generals . I like Shogun 2's generals system more than I like 3 kingdoms' ; having your generals be more or less on par stats wise and having to protect them as they are the head of your army felt way more realistic and involved more strategy than just sending in Lu Bu and watch him kill a thousand men ( ye , I know how to micromanage them and all but I just don't really like having heroes rather than normal generals , still...not a huge flaw at all ) . The endgame . I like its "realm divide" mechanic more than anything the 3 kingdoms endgame has to offer ; while you could argue that it was indeed a whole hell of a mess surviving realm divide provided a true challenge , you had to prepare your economy , armies , fleets and allies before triggering it and you'd always feel pretty satisfied by winning after going through that hell . Three kingdoms' endgame makes me feel rather bored instead , it doesn't really pose a threat to the player . The armies system . I really liked to be able to move armies without a general and to have any general be able to lead any army . The colours system is just annoying . I can live with it...but I still prefer Shogun two's system . The campaign length . I can finish a shogun 2 campaign within 2-3 days even on legendary , sometimes even less . This isn't the case with 3 kingdoms . When the kingdoms have formed and one of your opponents is on the other side of the map it gets truly painful and boring to try reaching them by having to deal with China's 9999999 provinces vs Japan's 60 ones . It takes too long . The agents system . I really like the old metsuke , monk , ninja system...not so much cause of the way it is but cause they are just so damn useful in Shogun 2 . You can halt armies , make settlements rebel , kill off some army's only general thus making their morale crumble , corrupt entire armies and so on ; agents in 3 kingdoms feel instead rather useless in comparison , they take a long time to be active , they may defect , the services they provide are just...nearly not as good . That said...Three kingdoms indeed deals with diplomacy better , the AI is better , the balancement between unit types is better ( no more yaris dominating the battlefield ) , it deals with sieges better both defensively ( shogun 2's castles were a bit op when defending ; it's harder to protect cities while they still give you an advantage over the aggressor ) and offensively ( shogun 2's siege weapons just suck . ) . The game's nice overall and I hope I'll be able to get more into it when I have some more free time and will .
