The drug problem is in a few neighborhoods and streets, starting from Omonoia and going north/northwest. Elsewhere it's fine, even like 100 meters from Omonoia square in any other direction. Mind you in the day even those streets are perfectly safe (you can just ignore the ocassional junkie, they don't do anything except ask for a handout in some cases), and tens of thousands of people walk around them, kids, families, etc. The homeless appeared after the financial crisis (2010) and the neoliberal reforms. They were like zero homeless before that.

I visited Athens way back in 2006 when I was a teenager with my younger sister and parents. We stayed in Omonia and I remember it being a bit on the rough side, but it was mainly because it had a more visible homeless population. I don’t remember noticing a really bad drug problem and syringes and things or sex workers (though being with my family we weren’t exactly the ‘target audience’ lol). Never felt unsafe, even at night tbh. I’m thinking things have got worse due to the financial crash, years of austerity and then Covid, which is sad to see but not unexpected I guess. Athens still looks lovely though, and I’d love to go back as I had a really great time the first time I visited! Great video! 👍

Welcome to Greece, Chris! I hope i can help you a bit with your "grocery hunt". The streets vendors you see that sell greens and vegetables is what we call "laiki" (pronounced la-ee-kEE) meaning traditional shopping as they did in older times, so you should expect people selling their crops and produce here at better prices than the bigger market ones! You should know that cash is a must at these places and people there don't really speak English fluently, but more or less you should be able to to manage a hefty grocery spree! 200 euro is kinda too much, 100 euro should be enough if you just take a piece of everything there, but hey better safe than sorry!

I have been to Athens 4 times as part of the Air Transat Package, each time. Air Transat is a tour operator based in Montreal, Canada. We flew with them out of Toronto to Greece (approx. 10-11hours flying time!). Their representatives met us there in the airport and the hotels in Athens. I saw the Acropolis, museum in Athens. AMAZING HISTORICAL SITE!!!. Food is so good especially their desserts like spinach pies, baklavas and so on!! I was there in the late 1990*S and early 2000*s. I like shopping for dresses there. I remember the saleslady gave me a skirt as a gift when I told her where I was from. What a kind hospitality and welcome!!! Time was good back then. Chris, thanks for bringing me back those wonderful memories of Athens!!!

Greece is absolutely amazing, particularly the parts in 38:00 of the video, that entire market area is filled with quality goods. You can easily drive down the price on items with the workers of the shops, the goods are of great quality and I found the linen to be of superb quality at great pricing. Everyone should visit Greece if not for the goods and foods but for the locals - they're spectacularly kind people.

Hello, Athens isn’t particularly dangerous. Around Omonia is probably the worst ghetto in Greece. Even in Omonia if you mind your own business most likely no one will bother you. Crime statistics point toward the fact that it’s actually quite a safe city for travelers-Athens is not included on lengthy lists of the world’s most dangerous cities, and a 2020 crime index from Numbeo put the Greek capital at number 140 on the list, rating it safer than cities such as Tampa, Florida, San Francisco CA, Miami FL , Orlando FL, Philadelphia PA, Washington DC, London UK Manchester UK, Paris France , Brussels Belgium, Rome Italy, Naples Italy and Dublin Ireland. Heavy crimes like murder, rape etc. its pretty low, probably Athens in that aspect is one of the safest cities in the world. Still, there are certain things that travelers to Athens should keep in mind to ensure the safest possible visit. Stay vigilant for pickpockets and other petty thieves, scammers, these are the most common crimes targeting travelers in Athens. Be especially cautious at crowded attractions, on public transportation, and in taxis, where drivers sometimes scam their passengers for higher fees. Generally though they're very helpful and safe. Plus you can use an app (taxi beat or uber) to get a taxi this way you always get the right rate. The most prominent form of crime in Athens is, as you might guess, pickpocketing. By all accounts, pickpocketing, purse snatching, and other forms of petty theft are common, especially at crowded tourist attractions, nightlife destinations, and on buses and trains, where you should take extra care to guard your belongings. Be particularly vigilant if someone seems like they’re trying to distract you; meanwhile, someone else may be reaching into your purse. The rest of Greece is Very safe! Especially the Islands! Enjoy your stay and the food! :)

I went to Athens for the first time solo last summer and also stayed in a hostel in Omonoia. I of course didn't check the area beforehand at all haha. I walked one block deeper from my hostel and saw literally 50 people in a street smoking crack. I walked a little bit away and thought I was in a more chill place and sat on a bench. A woman sat next to me, didn't say anything and just grabbed a crack pipe from her purse and started smoking. I left immediately and didn't go deeper to the hood again :D. In daytime the area wasn't that bad, just a lot of immigrants but most of them were chill. Athens is a nice city but I recommend to check the area to stay carefully. I can recommend Thessaloniki if anyone is looking an alternative city to go to in Greece. Much smaller but not too small so less traffic and stuff, also less tourists and generally speaking people are mostly Greek. Finding a great Greek restaurant there wasn't hard at all like it is in Athens. Only minus is that the beach is far away if you're into that. I really want to go to Athens again as soon as possible. In case anyone had good experiences in hostels let me know!

If Omonoia square reminds you of downtown LA, this is because Omonia is downtown Athens. Also these spoke shaped roads connect the edges of the city to its center of gravity , the square . It is what the place was designed to be. By definition most of the malcontents and all the other sketchy characters are gravitationaly attracted to this place
