Oh, well, I was visiting Boston a couple of years ago, and walked past a Halal Guys shop at least once a day. I like ethnic food, so I couldn't resist stopping by. I don't know why I thought it was a mom and pop store. A local business with authentic food, ha. Later on I was disappointed to find out it was a chain store... We all have been there. Beautiful cities Boston and London. I'm originally from Buenos Aires btw.

Americans really should explore the other UK cities. Manchester has a vibe to it that will fascinate the senses. It was here where the industrial revolution really got going in early 1800s. Edinburgh is very gothic and unusual. Even Glasgow has its perks. Liverpool home of many pop bands including the Beatles and then there's Oxford, Cambridge, York, Bath and Birmingham. Wales has Aberystwyth which looks out onto the beautiful Cardigan Bay, whilst Cardiff has also undergone some gentrification. Belfast Northern Ireland is the home of the Titanic dockyard.

London is so much better than Paris on so many levels - WiFi, for example. I once walked around Paris and could find only TWO cafes that offered WiFi. One was a German bakery and the other was Starbucks 😂 In London, you cannot walk ten paces without coming across free WiFi. Paris obviously has some spectacular architecture in places like the Louvres, Arc De Triomph and Notre Dame, but London can easily equal that as far as I’m concerned. Stunning architecture is everywhere in London and the city has an unbeatable vibe that Paris just lacks. Paris is good for designer boutiques, but that’s about it.

As someone who has visited family in both cities, I found Paris though having charm was not as clean, and lacked evening entertainment whereas London delivered both. I could spend a month in the British museum (which was free) and still not see it all.

In Germany, there are days were you put old stuff for example chairs, a desks etc on the street and it gets picked up or random people can take it and keep it. It seems to be the exact same thing. Everyone calls it Big Ben but it's actual name is Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben is the name of the bell that strikes the hour. They changed the name from Clock Tower to Elizabeth Tower in 2012 because of the Queen's Diamond jubilee. Why they didn't just officially name it what everyone calls it, Big Ben is beyond my comprehension. Piccadilly name goes back to the early 1600s. When it was open countryside. Someone bought some land there and started making and selling Piccadills, large lace collars. He named the house he built Piccadilly hall. Which is where the name comes from.

Hi Traintin. The comparison with beautiful Paris always stimulates. Paris is smaller, very self-contained and "preserved". London is vast and sprawling: it has the City and Westminster - Town and Court - so is two places in one. Paris is planned and of course was developed by Hausmann. London has just developed and evolved without much planning. There are many more high rise and modernist buildings in London (Paris has the Montparnasse Tower & Pompidou Centre). The City in London was badly blitzed in the war but retains its ancient streets but with contemporary buildings among the old churches. Both cities are supreme and wonderful. I love both equally. But the bread and wine in Paris beats London ales. But they are like beautiful sisters.

Paris is preserved simply because the French capitulated and collaborated with Nazi Germany in 1940, to the everlasting shame of the French people. The British stood firm and paid the price, much of central London including the East End was badly damaged in aerial bombing and many lives lost. London bears all the scars and redevelopment with pride. I doubt whether the French with their effete Baron Haussman architecture can say the same. The French can keep Paris. I'll take London over Paris any time. And I can miss out on the smelly Paris metro as well.

Re your curiosity over the name Piccadilly Circus- 'circus' is an old Roman word for round- that's why circuses ( as in those travelling shows in large round tents, featuring acrobats, clowns and animals, traditionally) are called circuses. Heard of a movie called Ben Hur? It features a famous chariot race around one of the main circuses in Ancient Rome, called the Circo Massimo- the Circus Maximus in English. You can still walk around it today. So, in London, there are two big circular intersections of several streets- hence the names Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus.

I've always preferred London over Paris for one simple reason...its parks. Paris just doesn't have enough of them, and I found it quite a hard place to take time-out in. London can be a surprisingly relaxing place to spend time in with its parks, low density sprawl and its many cosy neighbourhoods which somehow feel detached from the city. Having said that, Paris is more uniformly pretty there is no doubt about that. The perfect city would be Paris' architecture with London's parks.

Interesting perspective on a hot-off-the-press first open-eyed visit. For anyone else about to visit I would just use your normal contact-less payment rather than going through the hassle of getting an additional Oyster card, the prices and uses are exactly the same (trains, underground and buses etc). Both will calculate the cheapest fare for you so you dont need to pre-emptively wonder which price zone you are going to be in and both will automatically apply daily price capping, so dont need to worry about what type of travelcard will be best. The end of day total cost is sent as a single transaction to your contactless payment card/phone so any foreign exchange charges from your bank will by applied at that point. For more of a sense of arrival I would recommend the (now called) Elizabeth line from Heathow to Paddington Station (you can change here for the underground section of the Elizabeth Line into central London or say the Bakerloo line. This is faster than the Piccaddilly Line, but you will pay a small price premium (about £1 on top of the normal underground price to Heathrow) to use the Elizabeth Line train (not as expensive as the business-orientated Heathrow Express service which is about £25 for a single 15 minute journey lol). The street cleaning is done per borough (administrative region fo the city) and it varies depending how much a borough is willing to spend on it. Often you will find busy tourist areas or say street market or even just times when there are not cleaners e.g. Sunday and there will be noticeable litter on the ground. The bin bags on the street are for that days collection as many historical properties do not have space for a large wheelie bin outside. That wall is a lot older than 1800 lol The Large lions were made from melted down captured French Canons. Cafe Nero is jsut a chain coffee place found all over the UK, Costa is similar but older, both are UK based. But you will find better coffee in smaller chains and independent places all over London, just as with big chains they hog the places with big footfall. Might be worth giving "Pret" a try, its another big Sandwich chain but some prefer their coffee to Starbucks etc. Re iced coffee you will find that retail trends from the US hit the UK before Europe generally but not before Japan.

I've been around a lot of big cities in the world, living in London for four years, and I would put it this way - London for business, Paris for pleasure, and New York for breakfast and shopping. London has a lot of huge, beautiful features - Parks, fountains, cathedrals, world leading museums and galleries, and excellent bars and restaurants for every international taste there is. But the city is also VAST and tricky to navigate. It can be hard for tourists to see everything. An American friend of mine now permanently lives in London, and we both tell people that the best advice for London is: wear walking shoes and loose pants. Walk fast. Stand on the right. Carry your wallet inside your jacket. Expect to pay twice as much for everything than you are used to. Also: You can tell you are lost for half of this video, because you are walking around some really quiet/in-between bits of London. But thats cool, reminds me of living there biking around the metropolis.

Hi Traintin, You look like you were lucky with the weather, Yep Central London especially the touristy areas is kept clean but there are plenty of areas where you would find NYC levels of trash blowing about, left on streets, I don't know how much of the rest of London you explored it's a massive city twice the size of NYC with a population of just under 10 million as of 2022 there's so much more to see than just the bits everyone goes to etc, Fun Factoid of the day London is technically a Forest, Yep you heard me right! Because of all the Parks, Green Spaces, Trees etc it qualifies under the U.N & Forestry Commission as an Urban Forest in fact the largest Urban Forest on the planet, Don't know how long you're spending in the U.K but if you get the chance please visit Scotland, Wales, Ireland North & South as well as England there's beautiful Architecture, History, Countryside all over, Other great cities Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Swansea, Birmingham etc All the best on your travels Cheers Jim, Surrey

Paris more dope than London?? No way. London has had more variety in everything from culture, architecture, mood, vibe, music etc. Paris is beautiful but it's one dimensional. Every quarter of Paris is the same. The architecture is monochrome almost all from the 17th/18th century. It's nowhere near as international, multi period or eclectic as London.

Cafe Nero (a chain) will be delighted with your recommendation. The joy of travelling is embracing the new, not trying to find what you have at home and then slag it of as inferior. Be brave and try something unfamiliar. Trust people. Open yourself up, don't squirrel yourself away eating in a park
