AMERICANS EXPLORING LONDON for the FIRST TIME! Hitting the Highlights!!

We are loving London! Today we decide to venture out on foot and see what we can find. I look up what is within walking distance from our hotel (since there is a strike going on for the Underground) and we take off.
We grab a quick bite to eat and then walk to Soho and the Theater District where we see that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is playing... we may just have to see that one!
Next up is Picadilly Circus and then onto Trafalgar Square. From here we walk towards Big Ben which we can see off in the distance. We are able to see the House of Parliament and the Thames River close to the sun going down. We walk over to Westminster Abbey but it was already closed for the day. On the walk back, we are craving Mexican food and found a great spot for dinner. All in all a GREAT day exploring!

Westminster Abbey was built between 960 and 1065, a wee bit older than 500 years…😂😂. Cracking video 👍

I can assure you both that Westminster Abbey is far older than the age you mentioned. It's construction started in 1245, in the reign of Henry III. Westminster Hall, which is next to the Abbey, dates from even earlier, to the reign of William 'Rufus' II, who had it built in 1097.

You must have read about the Lady Chapel at the East End of Westminster Abbey which was a late addition finished in about 1520. For gothic architecture that's LATE! 😆 As Gig said, most of Westminster Abbey was built in the 1200's and 1300's

The first church on the site is known to have been built in 960sAD, but there is some literary and archaeological evidence that suggests it was the site of the massive Roman-Christian Londinium basilica built in the 4th Century AD but then partially destroyed as a kind of punishment for the "barbarica conspiratio" ("great conspiracy" - a nationwide tribal rebellion) in Britain which began around 367AD. The point is - it's a very important place, historically!

Just a note about the National Gallery…yes, there is a National Portrait Gallery just around the corner from where you were standing, The National Gallery houses paintings from most of the famous artists from medieval times to relatively modern. Last time I visited it was free entry. If you like modern art the best place to go is The Tate Modern.

I took it for granted too, when I studied and lived in Richmond. I know, Londoners, it doesn't count as London, but I was in and out of the city all the time. I had a holiday job in the fabric department of Liberty in Regent Street and was offered full time, but turned it down because I didn't fancy the commute in by tube!! It's lovely seeing familiar places with new eyes. I moved to Australia for several years and when I came back I fell madly in love with my old country. many years later I still feel it. There may be difficulties but the core beauty, history, greenness is still there.

@@EECCTravels Due to the KZbin genies, you cropped up today and I have been enjoying your good humoured and guileless appreciation of our wonderful capital city - thus, I shall try not to be too vexed (thereby perversely negating my own enjoyment of your enjoyment!) by an honest, but ever so slightly sloppy mistake - allow me to explain, if you would? By the way, before doing so, we got most of the first video seeing you catch a flight then getting stuck in traffic in the world's most expensive cab. In part 2 we got to see you leave the hotel in the middle of the afternoon and then after blowing through Piccadilly (not Piccadilly Street), Trafalgar Square and Whitehall, see you miss your Parliament and Westminster Abbey tours! Hmmmppphhh! Anyway, so already feeling a little short changed, when you went to visit the Abbey, you correctly identified that St Margaret's is indeed closely associated with Westminster Abbey and that it was "built in 1523". For sure, it was certainly finished that year but even the incredible master masons and builders of the age could not do it in 12 months! I know you only have a limited number of minutes, seconds even, but I feel that the start date of 1486 is just as important, as is the fact a church had previously stood on the site since the 11th Century. But that is a minor quibble which, had my complaint been limited to that, would have passed me by with a shrug and a wry half sigh half smile as I muttered simply "Americans!" My real exasperation, which you will I am sure be happy to hear, I am mostly already over 😏 occurred at the point where, during the mention of that church's already impressive ancientness, you pan your shot up and down the bloody Great North Door of the Abbey proper!!!!! While I was generous enough earlier to acknowledge your identifying not only significant proximity, also much shared religious, cultural and political history with the closely associated St Margaret's - they are nevertheless still different buildings! VERY different buildings! Westminster Abbey is on a site that had already for six hundred years, starting during Saxon times in the 7th Century, seen people worship there by the time King Henry III decided he wanted a more spectacular church to house the remains of Saint King Edward the Confessor with whom he had become a bit obsessed. Edward had already knocked down the previous building of 960 to make way for his own Norman/Romanesque replacement, consecrated about a year before his death in 1066 but not finished til 1090. That "new" building in turn, Henry had demolished in 1245 to make way for the magnificent structure which exists today but which you only "glimpsed momentarily from the outside" while simultaneously referring to it as St Margaret's and mentioning a five hundred year history when in fact a over a thousand is nearer the mark. Whilst there are parts of the Abbey which were not finished until the 18th Century - most notably the mighty twin West Towers by Nicholas Hawksmoor (although in fact it can be argued construction of completely new parts of the Abbey continues to this day and indeed the current Surveyor of the Fabric, Ptolemy Dean, designed and had built in 2015 a small tower to house the lifts enabling wheelchair access to the Eastern Triforium) - the North Door which your shot captured, was probably finished no later than 1260 which makes it nearer 800 than 500 years old and the Pyx Chamber in the crypt is known to have survived from Edward's Romanesque structure, dating from 1060. It is even known with certainty there are still eleventh century tiles on the floor in there. Instead, while everyone watching was undoubtedly sympathetic to your tiredness from jet lag and therefore sleeping in, we had to endure seeing you "eat eggs". This in and of itself seems a wasted opportunity since the impression given was that it is a franchise you have already experienced elsewhere. At least go and eat a proper Full English at The Chop House for a really deluxe version or experience "real Englishness" at a neighbourhood "greasy spoon" - our inauspicious sounding but fondly meant term for a small, usually family run cafe that you might term a "diner". The point being that while I acknowledge being in the minority in having such specialist knowledge, Westminster Abbey seems too central to London - and Britain - to gloss over and "get wrong". We all love and appreciate food, but I cannot be alone in feeling that, history buff or not, if we were only going to get two parts, they may have been better focused on Parliament and the Abbey rather than more shots of hunger being sated at a bland franchise, otherwise you might just as well have gone to the McDonald's you remarked on in Part 1.... That actually sounded much more cross than I was - well, hey ho, ever mind, consider the exquisitely detailed critique a generous gift and token of appreciation by a native!😆

Mexican food isn't really very popular in the UK, but Indian food certainly is. If you're staying in London, go to Brick Lane (just beyond St. Paul's Cathedral) there are literally dozens of Indian restaurants there, but in my opinion, the very best Indian food in the world is in the Mosley district of Birmingham with Leicester and Bradford also doing fantastic curries. Ps. I've been to India and the Indian food in the UK is better ... well to our taste anyway. It's lovely to see how much you're enjoying your holiday in London - there's a lot to see outside London too though.

@@EECCTravels American Mexican food is very different to Mexican Mexican food. British Mexican food is different (and in my opinion worse) than both. We don't have a tradition of Mexican immigration to Britain, so if you want great exotic foods, try a nationality that Britain has invaded or ruled over in the last two hundred years - trust me, there's a lot of them - and you there'll be communities from those cultures preparing amazing food for you. Indian, Pakistani, Carribbean, Iranian, Cantonese, Nigerian, Ghanaian and Persian food is excellent in the UK - Mexican? Not so much.

Best thing to do when traveling intentionally is get a flight that arrives in the evening. Get in, have a light meal and go to sleep. Makes waking up early really easy and lessens the jet lag. Early arrival is painful, because you want to nap. However, you never get over the jet leg.

I was once walking from my friends apartment to the Churchill war rooms and just happened to pass by Westminster Abbey. I saw a long line of tourists waiting but I went up to one of the staff and asked if I could pray and I was able to immediately go in. Wonderful people.

To Beat Jet Lag it is best to fly overnight to arrive midday. Try to sleep on the plane. Push through the day and hit the ground running. Go to bed at the local time. Forget about what time it is at home. You will wake up like normal in the morning and never notice the time change. Pro-tip: if you have a medication that needs to be taken at a specific time each day (ie:birth control) figure out the time change and take your med at the time that would equal the time you take it at home. 8am ATL = 1pm GMT.

From the 1880s till the 1970s the area was covered with ads, billboards and lights for blocks. They started taking the neon down in the 80s onwards that festooned the facades, many of the beautiful buildings they didn't even know what they would reveal. Now the screens are kept on one remaining corner out of 'tradition'.

Try the Hop On Hop Off buses. We lived in Europe for three years and whenever we went to a new city we would do these buses. It gets you to all the major points of interest but you are still free to roam where you want and get back on the bus when you want.

We did the Hop on Hop off bus that also included a little cruise on the river. We stayed across the river near the Tower of London. The Tower Bridge is just beautiful.

Great video, I always find it funny that people from overseas expect london to be constantly cloudy or constantly raining. Its climate is similar to Paris but that city is never portrayed in that manor. I think its because movies tend to use a grey filter with london, I've actually witnessed on a bright sunny day people watering cars and roads when streets have been shut off for filming to get that authentic london look. The camera was pointed at the abbey by the way, the church had the tower with the blue sundial halfway up it on your left.

@@EECCTravels Yep, London is actually in the driest part of the country -a vast chalk valley -and gets far less annual rainfall than say nearby Paris, and has half that of NYC. It's on par with Melbourne, Mexico City, Tel Aviv and on drought years -such as this one -it qualifies as semi-arid even. However, sun is indeed rare outside summertime, after which it becomes overcast - it's appearance causes UFO sightings and small children to run inside screaming.

@@PeterChelmsford True but saying that there are moments, many under the radar -for example the heatwave in 2003 caused an access 3,000 deaths (in Europe it hit 70,000) in that short period, mostly the young and very old who couldn't cool down at night -aircon is much rarer here. It took years to realise the data, other than all the morgues filling up. This year will be similar I imagine.

Westminster Abbey is much much older than 500 years Founded by King Edward the Confessor (Englands last Saxon King & Saint)Built by Bishop Melitus for Edward in 753 AD & containes Edwards Shrine & Tomb what you see now is a 13th Cty circ1269 Rebuild it is both an Abbey & Minster( a Religeous School) & a Royal Peculiar ( Belongs to the Monarchy not the Church) & Is the Burial place of Most of Englands past Monarchs & Notable people. When built it was on an Island called "Thorney Island" bounded by the Thames & two branches of the River Tyburn!! Every Coronation since 1066 took place here! It is now 1269 years young??

Across from trafalgar sq is st martins in the field church. The church infamously has classical music performances for affordable amounts. Also the crypt has an amazing cafeteria style tea shop for tourists to refresh themselves and sample scones with clotted cream…a must imho.

Hi again, just loving your videos of London 🇬🇧 thank you for sharing. I just wanted to share some tips to help beat jetlag next time you fly eastbound across the Atlantic, so you make the most of each and every day without waking up at 3pm! Most transatlantic flights depart early evening through late evening US time, landing early morning through early afternoon UK time. There are, however, daily early morning flights direct from Chicago and New York to London, arriving around 8pm-10pm UK time. You lose a full day travelling but you suffer no jetlag as you arrive in the UK at bedtime and go straight to sleep, waking up fresh and full of energy. No naps, no trying to stay awake throughout the day, ZERO jetlag. I've done it and I recommend it. I literally woke up at 4.30am in 5th Avenue, New York, caught my British Airways flight departing JFK at 8.30am, landed in London at 7.30pm and was in bed well before midnight! Love to you both 🇬🇧

Love to see your adventures and seeing London through your eyes. It’s if I see it for the first time too. It’s to long that I was there, and I live only a one hour flight from it. (Takes way more time from my house into the city, but flight is 1 hour). And yes we have old buildings in Europe. It’s made me smile to see your reaction on those buildings. And yes jetlag sucks. I always struggle with it when we come home from US, it’s more problematic then going to US.

We really love to travel everywhere!!! The UK has always been on our radar and we decided just to do it. We never to with any expectations and don’t make a lot of plans so we can just go out and explore.

I'm a Cockney living in London. I live about a 5 minute walk from Southgate tube on the Picadilly line. And I've literally never seen the places you've been to. Only ever go into London on special occasions. Love your vlogs!

The National Gallery is the depository for the nation's best art collection, and the greatest hits of European art through the ages. The National Portrait Gallery is separate (next door), but currently closed for refurbishment. All the galleries and museums in London (and pretty much all non-private equivalents for the country) are free, funded by the govt and that costs the taxpayers only a few pennies each year.
