There is a spam reply to my comment about how to pronounce the town. I've reported it but it's using your photo and says Pinned by JetLag Warriors. I was very confused for a moment until I realized it's not you but a malicious impersonator - I'm telling you in case you also need or want to block it.

I was born in Timișoara (it is pronounced TeemeeSHoara, mind that SH), I live in Timișoara, and I would like to thank you a lot for your excellent video. I am really happy that you like our city so much, we are just so thankful that you like it. The river that crosses Timișoara is called Bega. Mamaliguța (polenta) is made of corn, corn beans are grinded, then boiled, with some salt. It is so delicious and healthy. Gratis is indeed free of charge, this word gratis comes from German language, it is exactly the same word in German language. Dobro is a word used in Serbia, in Romanian language it is said bun (pronounced boon), it means good. One more thing: in 2023 Timișoara will be for the whole year European Culture Capital, maybe you plan to visit it again, it will be full of very interesting events, I am sure hundred of thousands of people all over the world will travel to Timișoara.

Can confirm that Timisoara produces a lot of architects. Three are in my family. The city is a university town as it has 5 universities so there are a lot of young people. Timisoara is the first city in all of continental Europe to have electricity and also the first city in Romania to be free of communism as the revolution started there. I'm Canadian, but I'm super proud to be born in Timisoara. The city kind of gives me London, Ontario and Quebec city vibes.

Loved this video! As a Romanian, it's really nice to see people coming here and discovering everything Romania has to offer. Regarding the food: sarmale are actually cabbage rolls stuffed with minced meat and rice, we also have a veggie version of them with only rice. Polenta is made out of corn flour, it's corn flour with water, butter and salt. Micii are the exact same thing as kofta :D. Now since you are staying here for a while, you should try to see the rural areas of Viscri, Breb and Rimetea, to get a hang of romanian traditions.

@@JetLagWarriors and the reason why almost everybody can understand "Dobro" in Timisoara it's because we have a border with Serbia ( as you know). In fact, there is a Serbian Banat (i.e. "Banatul Sarbesc" - "Banat" being the name of the region) , formed from villages where the citizens are both speaking Serbian and Romanian. I have plenty friends that are born from Serbian parents. Thanks for showing my beautiful hometown to the others! Take care!

Born and raised in Timisoara. A peaceful and enjoyable city. It was known in Romania as the mind of the country. The city was the first one in Romania who removed communism in December 1989 after hundreds of people gave their lives fighting against the armed regime forces. In a quick parenthesis, RON is the short for ROmania New Leu after the denomination was done in 2005 (10,000 ROL were transformed into 1 RON)

A very discriminated Rom criminal clan confiscated and evacuated quite a number of public /state hospitals. Of course they couldn't do it alone. They did it with the complicity of the extended corruption of the Romanian communist and post-communist administration. They destroyed the city more than the war. Sure, criminality is destroying the democracy. If this is the rule of law there, good luck.

RON: Romanian New Leu (it was before called ROL but it has been changed when they cut 4 zeros from the currency's, for computer system to manage it easier 1RON = 10000 ROL) RO is short for Romania, like GB is short for Great Britain. So when they charged the currency because it had to have 3 letter like all the other currency's it was changed from Romanian Leu (ROL) to Romanian New (RON) fun fact New is Nou in Romanian and Leu means Lion. 🙂

Also some of our neighbours replaced their currencies recently and used „N” in their currency code: PLN is the abbreviation for Polish New Zloty and BGN is the one for Bulgarian New Lev (which is similar to Leu, both meaning Lion). RON is the abbreviation for Romanian New Leu, however the restaurants must use the „leu” for singular and „lei” for plural on the prices and not the international abbreviation of the currency.

I was told that during the Hungarian uprising of 1956, the students of the Timisoara Universities were "medievally" throwing hot polenta through the windows on the Soviet troops and communist Security troops below as a protest against the Soviet robbery causing the poverty of the nation. Eating exclusively polenta, because all the crops were sent to the USSR, generates a disease.

So happy you stayed in my home city and you actually had your apartment next to my absolute all time favorite building! (the green one on the corner). Too bad you didn't have a local person show you the hidden gems. For example, there is a special rock in the pavement in Unirii square where you stayed, I always asked friends visiting from outside the city to go ahead and look for it. It is slightly bigger than the rest and has the map of the old citadel carved in it. If you will ever come back to Romania and Timisoara, the best time to visit would be in spring, late April. The weather is nice without being too hot and the city is full of flowers. Unirii square is great for people watching, a lot just come out for a stroll, with their kids or dogs, art and architecture uni students come here to draw/sketch, others play guitar, people sit on the terraces, the atmosphere is lovely. After watching more of your videos about your romanian experience, I find your first contact with your food funny now. Mamaliga a.k.a polenta is made out of cornflour, I guess you learned that by now. And the first contact with mici is so funny, knowing how Steve is absolutely in love with them now.

Nice, I like the "old town" parts of cities some lovely buildings there. Polenta is made from dried ground corn we have those in Slovenia too made into croquettes, those Mici, look similar to Ćevapi, grilled serbian sausage, but they are a little larger. We have fried cheese also in Slovenia another of my favourites but surprisingly filling. Agree with Steve to eat the cheese before it cools down too much. "Dobro" means "good" in many Slavic languages.Great view from your apartment over the square.

RON for Lei is what USD is for US dollar, or CAD for Canadian Dollar. RON means ROmanian New. It used to be ROL for Romanian Leu, but a few years ago, maybe 10, we conducted a denomination where 10.000 lei turned into 1 Leu (Leu is singular for Lei). So in order to avoid confusion our National Bank also switched from ROL to RON with this denomination.

You guys stayed in the Unirii Square (Union Sqare). Your next door neighbour is Casa Bruck (The House of Bruck). Fun fact about that: originally, there was a pharmacy at the lower level, and the tradition continues even now. In The Unirii Square there are two churches, the Catholic one which you mentioned and an orthodox one, The Serbian Orthodox Church. The architectural style in the Unirii Square is the Baroc style, and the big building next to Casa Bruck is The Baroc Palace, which is an art museum. The buildings in the Operei Square, the one with the Mitropolitan Cathedral are of the Art Nouveau, a style specific to the early 1900, and the architect is Laszlo Szekely. The Cathedral is the second tallest orthodox Church outside of Russia, and the tallest one is in Bucharest. The Timișoara cathedral was built in the mid 1900 and the style is specific to România, with some byzantine style, of course. The restaurant that you ate at is Miorita, which is the name of an old "doina" a kind of old poem style. Miorita was transmitted by oral speaking and it has hundreds of versions. Mulțumesc for visiting Timișoara! (And yes, the beer is made here at a factory that the Austrians population built, approx. in 1718 after they beat the ottomans).

We usually eat mici with mustard and bread just like that haha. The mamaliga would usually be served with some kind of stew or saucy food like chicken paprikas or literally simple onion stew. Also "dobro" or "dobre" is good in Slavic languages like serbian or croatian xD we don't use it in Romania. However since Timisorara is close to Serbia i assume some people might us it over there. Cool video!
