I had wanted to design and develop an Indy for many years. I remember asking Amati, when I worked there, if I could do an Indy. They just laughed as they could not even pronounce the name - so that was a no. So Indy was always going to be one of the first of the larger kits I develop once I started my own range...

Looks like a great model for those who are into wooden ships and have the experience. And an interesting subject, I even learned Indefatigable was an actual ship in the period the Hornblower series is set.
@AlbertD711Ай бұрын
That looks absolutely amazing. It looks very well engineered. It must have taken a tremendous amount of work to develop the kit. Although I would love to build it, I don’t think it’s something I would be able to do with my skill level. I may try one of Vanguards simple models to see if I want to develop the skills. I may just get the kit you’re currently building and follow along. Thank you for the wonderful review.

Thanks Jason - gone down with Covid and so viewing a long video was right up my street. A great video and ordered Duchess of Kingston on Friday I hope it is as good yours. Personally Indefatigable is a bit beyond me. Looking forward to seeing a build video - will keep up my Southbourne build up with yours.

Fantastic kit!!! Having started the rigging on the Duchess… I wish I knew about the dark brown rope earlier. I would have switched to that. Simply because it makes viewing the lines and all the work that went into them, easier to see. I’ll be getting it for my next build and I think it will work really well.

Hi Jason, Wow, this is quite a kit! I took a look at Wikipedia, it's a really interesting ship. It took just over 3 years to build the original. It will probably take longer to build the kit. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff

@andrewjones1649Ай бұрын
Great and detailed review. The kit is off the scale in its scope and detail. It's way beyond my skill level, and quite possibly always will be, but what potential there is in that box. My only other reservation would be is how many times you said you could purchase additional/extra/alternative parts. Extra for the sails and boats, I kind of get, but for such big bucks, I thought perhaps the flags and extra crew might have been in the box. Other than that, it looks amazing.
@christopherwatton1257Ай бұрын
There are no sails as extra for most of my kits, as I do not like them so much, and even less on something as large as Indy. In any case, a set of high quality sails for Indy would cost way too much. Regarding the ships boats, these are all included in with the kit. I have commissioned a set of boats for 3-d printed hulls and laser cut pear parts for the future, only for those who do not want to make up the ones provided in the kit. So everything is included in the Indy kit. Quite a few customers build the model without masts and rig, so if I included the more expensive machined blocks and flag set, this would be an extra cost to the modeller who may not even want them (making the kit cost £150 more) - but the options are there if you want them.
@andrewjones1649Ай бұрын
@christopherwatton1257 Thank you for your detailed answer. It wasn't a huge criticism, moreover a query, really. The kit is a work of art in itself.
@jameshatch5324Ай бұрын
Everything you see in that finished build is built with only the pear blocks added. Nothing else is needed, but the options are there if you wanted to take it to another level.

Excellent in-depth review of what looks to be a fantastic kit. Congratulations should go to the designer, Chris Watton, for producing such a well engineered quality kit. Good advice regarding this not being a beginners kit, how many unfinished HMS Victory models out there? I have a tip about keeping wood bundles together, I use small nylon cable/zip ties, just don't over tighten otherwise you could end up marking the wood.

@markkennard5414Ай бұрын
Fire buckets are quite easy to produce using Aluminium foil from "take away" oven food trays at supermarkets. (Lots of thicknesses available.) Wrap a strip around a tapered dowel or thick pencil. Superglue a straight joint. Cut top and bottom parallel, and add thin wire for handle. Use a leather punch to produce a circle to fit as base.
