The thing about Zeppelin live is, it's not about 4 guys playing the same song the exact same way every time. It's about 4 brilliant musicians creating music together, playing off each other and throwing in little improvisations here and there. It's a level of musicianship that you just can't get today, with everyone singing to click tracks, pre-recorded backing tracks, and computerized effects. It's truly a thing of beauty.

Page's interpretation of that solo can be a bit frustrating and sloppy. I like how tight the studio version sounds rather than the live, and have an expectation of hearing something far closer to the studio version. If he wanted to do a solo outside of Stairway to Heaven where he improvises that would be far preferable, kind of like how Eddie Van Halen would play his songs tight and then use the Eruption solo for all his live wild licks and improv.
@jamespaul36544 ай бұрын
@gw2955 If you were on the road touring for show after show, would you like a little release via improv from the expected? The end result shows the talent even more.
@gw29554 ай бұрын
@@jamespaul3654 I have a sneaking suspicion that Page couldn’t play the solo note for note and that’s why he did these really long improvs. He was a fantastic studio musician but maybe not as precise live. EVH described Page’s live playing as sloppy.

This is one way I try to explain to non-metal people what I see in some of the heavier music. A very few guitarists can make their instrument SING. Jimmy Page and Dimebag Darrell always come to mind. Jimmy can make that thing sing and Dime could make a guitar CRY and scream and weep like few others. And when you have a rare vocalist that can be an instrument, it creates a wicked duet (sew the outro to Cemetery Gates or this performance we are watching now). Amazing stuff!

Here you saw Robert and the rest of the team when they were very young, now you will see them in the stands at the end of their lives. Of course, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones will be there, drummer John Bohnam, who died tragically at a young age, is missing, but his son Jason will play drums on stage and pay tribute to his father. This will be a big surprise and emotion for Robert, because John and Robert were very close. Bonham, aka Bonzo, on the drums, every time the song "levels up", he introduces it, then goes back into the background without dominating or pounding away thru the whole song like so many drummers do. He knows when to let Jimmy play and Plant sing, then he intro's Jimmy's solo,,,,,,,,,wow, wow, wow. these guys were each absolute genius gods by themselves, but then you throw them together and in an absolute rarity of human experience, they are all so confident in their own abilities that they didn't have huge egos stepping all over each other which allowed them all to have their own individual moments to shine, and the others let them do their thing, and yet at times all come together and make sounds unlike any other, not even close, the Kings of R n R.

One of the most interesting recordings of "Stairway" is on the Zeppelin album "BBC Sessions" . On the album , they are playing the song for the 1st time in front of an audience . The 4th album hadn't been released yet , so the audience had no idea of what they were witnessing / hearing . When the song was finished there is this momentary silence from the audience at that point where they are probably wondering "Are they finished ? " and then the applause breaks out as they realize they were in the midst of history . 🙂

I was at a party a few years ago, and the subject of Led Zeppelin came up. I mentioned that I saw them in concert when I was 16 years old. It suddenly got quiet. If I had a microphone in my hand I'd have dropped it then and there. Such was the moment.

In 1973 Robert's smoking and youthful voice displayed here got the best of him and he had vocal cord surgery not too long after this. His voice matured because of it. If a band lasted ten years, back then it was an accomplishment. Throughout the years Robert still maintains his unique sound but not quite like we see here in the early 70's. How about that this was one of the FIRST bands who made a movie of the live concert experience & to put it to film. Highly Recommended!! Thanks for the analysis!

This song is such a memorable anthem because of the way it's built. It's a crescendo from beginning to end. Something about that clicks in our emotional center

The hand gestures are also telling. When Robert sings "you know sometimes words have two meanings" he holds up both hands with the middle and index fingers raised and turns his hands, palm facing forward, then the back of the hand facing forward. Of course, the two fingers indicate two meanings but the hand position also has two meanings. Palm forward is the "peace" sign, while the two fingers raised with the back of the hand facing forward in the UK means "get stuffed" or a more extreme sentiment. As for Jimmy's guitar prowess, it is of course stunning, made even more so with his effortless transition between the six string and the twelve string. Also this magical piece played live has no bass guitar, so Jon's drumming alone is the base and John Paul's keyboard work completes the spell.

JPJ played bass pedals on the keyboard (organ).

Saw them perform in St Louis in 1973 or 74, can’t remember. We travels from northern Illinois to St Louis because we thought we had a better chance of getting tickets and we did. Paid $6.00 for general admission seats and even then I thought that was cheap. When they played this song you could have heard a pin drop in the stadium. Absolutely amazing and incredible experience.

Lucky you. They didnt tour in 1974 as Plant had to recover from his throat operation so it must have been '73.✌️

Please include the celebration day performance in this week’s list! You won’t be disappointed. So special for many reasons including the band members ages that day in 2007 as well as John Bonham’s son Jason playing on drums. Hell, that days performance of “No quarter” is my favorite version of the song. Keep em coming!

That performance is great but it's lacking John Bonham. Jason is good but he's not his dad.
