That solo sux compared to the studio version solo. It’s like he isn’t as good as his younger self. That wasn’t a very ‘clean’ solo. I’ve heard Jimmy say in an interview before that there is a song they didn’t play live because he made the solo so hard to play that he can’t get it right every time. Can’t for the life of me remember which song he said it was.

@@frankiek2269 I absolutely disagree. THIS version of the solo is by far my favorite. And I say this as someone who learned to love the song with the studio version and was biased in its favor at first. The fact that a good percentage of this is live stage improvisation that follows only vaguely the track of the original song makes it only even MORE impressive.

Ok now, you can't do Zeppelin without doing whole lot of love. A real sweet one is called thank you. Used to sing it in my wife's ears as we danced and held each other, now that she has passed I tear up every time I listen to it. The words were how I thought of our love. There is a lot of Zeppelin out their, so have fun.🌷✌

A lovely memory to hold and cherish, good sir. My wife was a Zep fan too and one thing she insisted on was that Stairway got played at her funeral - so this beautiful song always hits hard these days and always brings to mind the mental image of blazing sunlight through the church's stained glass windows spilling over her willow coffin.

8:29 "I think the drums literally change the whole vibe of the song." The drummer, John Henry Bonham is arguably (and certainly in my opinion) the greatest drummer who ever lived. AND in one of the greatest bands of all time, in their signature tune, he doesn't play a beat for the first six and a half minutes. THAT right there is the GENIUS of Led Zeppelin.

:) He's not. But he is definitely one of the most influential (along with Paice and Moon forced me to be a drummer) and unique drummers, one whose style is recognizable and rather universally liked (though Buddy Rich didn't think of him much). There are stories how he would fight with Plant or Page over playing a tune live, because he couldn't get it really right live and was too stressed to play (maybe one of the reasons he abused so much) - that doesn't really make him the greates drummer. Especially not who ever lived. But as I say - unique, infulential, liked, recognizable, imaginative, sensitive, with a great feel for what would sound best for a piece - sure. Amazing listen. And a favorite. But not a greatest (that is not saying he was bad any). It is nice that many people think what you think about him, he deserves praises and being rememebered as a force in rock.

Loved your reactions and soft demeanor on this review. I will follow your reviews. Have fun. By the way...I am 72 and still rockin'. Saw Zeppelin at Long Beach Arena ,Calif. on their 1975 Tour. Tickets :$7.50 /$8.50. They had amazing stamina as they played for 3 to 31/2 hours straight. I was blessed to see them, Robert was in a car crash soon after and in a cast for months. I also got to meet and chat with Pagey when he was with the Yardbirds in 1967. Unbelievably, they showed up at my small hometown of LaPorte, Ind. with Dex Card of WLS Chicago where they played on tables and the floor in the Nat'l Guard Armory. Tickets were about $1.50 and you could stand just feet from Pagey and Jeff Beck, etc. I and a couple friends went outside for a cigarette during the band's break and here came Pagey. ( He introduced himself as Pagey.)He came up and asked to bum a cig. He said he liked menthols like I smoked (Kool's). We chatted and I told him they sounded great and I asked why Jeff rammed his guitar in his amp and walked off..JImmy said he hated the tour. Then the bass player yelled out for JImmy that they were starting up again and he said Bye and we watched him and Jeff do the dueling guitars on 'Upward,Over,Sideways,Down". I wish I would have stuck around until the gig was over and chatted with Pagey more. We were both about 17. Classic and Epic Time. Me with no camera, damn it!! Peace.

Hi dear. Your other commenter is right; on 'this' particular song, you need to hear the studio version. And this goes for much of what was done 'live' in New York, from Zep. For a young person to not hear the studio original is damned-near criminal. You should watch the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin. Heart performs 'Stairway to Heaven' in honor, and they have John Bonham's son performing on the drums, with Heart. John Bonham was, of course Zep's drummer, and one of the best and most-loved drummers on earth. Thanks for posting your reactions. When you played 'Urgent', by Foreigner, you LOVED IT so much that you actually passed your 'genuine' happy vibes energy on to us all. THANKS !!! That is the true mark of music's timeless power. It got you... just like it got all of us. (listen to the studio version of 'Urgent'... 'and' Dirty White Boy --- if you want a quick tough song to dance to ! ) ok... Keep on Keepin' on. You're my fav' for your honesty and honest involvement and ear for the music. Peace to you.

Another band that did lots of speak singing was Dire Straits, he is also a good guitarist. For really great guitar listen to Pink Floyd, the studio albums have lots of extra sound effects and many layers in songs, which sound good wearing headphones. Live, they don't have a lot of the bells and whistles, but the guitar work shines when he lets loose.

do yourself a favor, listen to the studio versions first, there’s so much more detail you can pick up and you can hear how it was meant to sound….no crowd noise or feedback, etc. The live versions are then great for showing off how spectacularly talented they are, both in their ability to actually play exceptionally well live, but also in their ability to improvise and make every rendition special.

"Mellotron" very similar to a Yamaha keyboard accompanied the guitar at the beginning of the recorded version of this song. Later, they used a Yamaha and 1 other similar brand for touring live performances.

9:55 when Jimmy switches from the 12 string neck on his guitar, the the 6 string… you had the appropriate reaction 🫢 the tone he gets from his guitars is otherworldly.

PASSION. that is the word with all the applications that come out of it when using it, it is what defines this band for me, and this song specifically. When I hear it, something inside always lights up... será la sangre española quizás 😄😉

Bisscute said He has those high notes under his belt and no special effects couldnt of said it better myself. With jeans that tight i would be screaming too :D Joking aside a masterpiece song/story. So sad Led-zepplin had such a short carrer. They had a all star team with the crazy out of this world creativity as bands like Pink Floyd and the Beatles had where creativity mixed with just enough madness to remain a sane person but pump out genius music and shows.
