@@keithgraham8588 If you've ever been in a relationship like that, every single line in the song makes sense. When you're in it, you realize it's probably not going to end well, but you're still going to give it one last try. Or multiple last tries. The other person is lying to you, double-talking, and then acting sweet. You actually believe everything is your fault at that point, so you keep trying to fix something that isn't in your power to fix and never was.
@loristone92422 жыл бұрын
Even though it is about a guy who's GF treats him like crap, it can still be taken as self deprecating humor from the writer to the listener's ears. Lots of people who have been treated this way joke about it. I am one of them. Most comedians have gone through situations that are painful, and they make humor out of them. But instead of wallowing in it, people find a positive way to deal with it. I most definitely think it could easily be perceived that way. I noticed some comments saying Brad is ignorant for how he he thinks the song is funny. That is bunk. If more people found a way to see humor in bad situations, they might not feel so negative and hopeless.

It's not an "emotionally abusive relationship". He even admits it himself "I may be dumb but I'm not a dweeb" -> In his mind, the last thing he'd rather be is a "dweeb" that turns down free pussy. It stops being "emotionally abusive" the moment there is two-way consent, which there is.

This is not at all a “funny” song. What is funny is that if this was a ballad sung by someone like Taylor swift the girls would be in tears by the end of it but because it’s dexter Holland and they’re running a Proco rat through a dual rec or some such - it’s apparently hilarious. The guy gets treated like shit, gets used and abused and because he has no self esteem he can’t walk away from it all and tries to justify the relationship.
@mistybenefield57963 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I never really read it as a "fun" song. Songs like this pair serious content with fun musicality. It's not the first song with that combo. "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind was another in that vein - dark lyrics, upbeat music.
@goldboy1503 жыл бұрын
Misty Benefield yeah but that’s a pretty common combination. Think of lots of the clash’s work - serious subject matter but upbeat, boppy tunes. I think it’s possibly more down to dexter Holland’s voice and the song being literal and not coated in metaphor. This is only a theory but I think Brad struggles with metaphor in music so much that when he sees a song written literally he just assumes it’s a “joke song” because if it was serious it would be written in metaphor he can’t understand. I’m thinking of his first pause into gimme shelter when he explained that he thought the song was about the weather because of the line “a storm is threatening my very life today”. Like in all honesty gimme shelter may be one of the easiest songs to pin down it’s meaning.

I think he's in love but he can't say it, so there's swagger about not being a dweeb, like he's only in it to get laid. "took her back" meant took her back to the kitchen. They hadn't been broken up....he was only planning to

@@TheDude-pr6ug "I took her back and made her dessert"? How is that sexual? I mean....it makes more sense considering the rest of the song but I've never ever heard that phrase, and I usually catch innuendo's whether they are there or not. Heard it called pie, which is desert, but not heard it called desert. Heard "made out" & "made love" but not made pie for sex, let alone made desert. I just don't see how those words mean sex (oral or otherwise). Unless maybe it is a west coast phrase that never made it to the east coast?
@TheDude-pr6ug3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffmitchell72 I live on east coast and lived in Fla at the time of songs release ,and the dessert 🍨may have been actual dessert, but he cooked it in her "proverbial" kitchen first ,just like breakfast always following sex, this time it was dessert, and perspective is subjective,

They used to play this song on 106.7 KROQ here in Los Angeles in 1994. That's how I heard it. That year, I was at a restaurant with my GF at the time and was telling her about this "Self Esteem" song by Offspring, how I kind of related to it . . .No, not because of her, but in general. I said it's one of the coolest songs I've ever heard. When we left, we took the long way home, and they managed to play it on KROQ. It was her first listen. She loved it, too, and still remembers it.

The guy is a simp. This song reminds me of a friend of mine. I went back to my hometown and he and I went out for drinks. He wanted to introduce me to his "girl". She meets us there and 5 minutes later she is working the room, talking to other guys and coming back when her drink is empty to have him get her a new one before she is off again. I could not stomach more than about an hour and a half of watching this before leaving. He left with me but she naturally stayed behind to "party on". On the way back I tried to delicately broach the subject of what just happened but be kept making excuses for her behavior. Finally I just flat out said "Dude, she is just not into you, find someone who is". That was the last time we hung out (because I do not live anywhere near anymore) but we still talk sometimes. He eventually acknowledged I was right. Honestly I would have rather been wrong. Anyways, this song always reminds me of that night.

I always considered it quite a serious song. Face it a good majority of people have lacking self esteem. How many people settle with someone who they know treats them poorly? Fear of not being able to find someone else is a real thing.

So many excellent Offspring songs to do: Come out and Play, Gotta Get Away, Kick 'em When He's down, Gone Away, Amazed... Their "joke" songs like Mota, Pretty Fly, What Happened to You?, Get a Job, are not only hilarious, but actually contain some pretty intelligent and biting social commentary. Lead singer Dexter Holland is a literal genius.

It’s songs like this that gave 7 year old me (34 now) some insight into this backwards world. It helped me see the hypocrisy and toxicity in most of the adult relationships in my life now and as a child. I truly think rock music is based on coping. For both the artist and the listener
