The phrase, "Gotta keep 'em separated" came from when Lead Singer Holland was in medical school. At the time, the band was unsure of how to tie the parts of the song together. One day, Holland was experimenting with bacteria in vials. He left the vials of bacteria in a room to let them cool down, came back after an hour or so, and noticed that the bacteria were still warm because the two samples were interacting with each other because the vials were close to each other. Dexter thought to himself, "I gotta keep 'em separated" and decided to use it to tie the new song together. >>

It has NOTHING to do with that " In the case of "Come Out And Play", it was about gang and school violence: " "Got to keep em separate" is even sang with sort of Mexican accent. It about keeping the gangs apart so they don't "smash it up"

honestly compared to most bands lasting this long, I don't think The Offspring strayed too far from their beginnings. Sure, they've strayed in some ways but it was only in their sense in humor really. I thibk they still stayed in their punk roots more than most punk rock bands.

Berto great singing! The Offspring are a fun punk alt rock band. Also the Middle Eastern/surf guitar style fits California lol. Could be beach or desert. Cali has both. Good ears yall. Lot of punk bands come from California, where these guys are from. If yall ever do a live skate punk stream or any kind of punk stream, these guys would def be on the polls. They have a little hip hop feel in some of their songs too. I was in high school when this group hit the mainstream. My kiddoes love The Offspring too. Very catchy. Their music videos are pretty unique too. This song is about the gang violence which was terrible during the 90s in California. Song is socially conscience which is typical of punk music. Hip Hop's cousin in a way. LA vibe. I grew up in SoCal. Most of us listened to rap, punk, alt rock, grunge, ska punk, everything growing up. Esp us GenXers. . Their singer is a nice dude too and very smart. Multiple college degrees. Do some Cypress Hill in the future too. They are also from LA. They do rap and rock.

I guess GOP was still handing guns out like candy back in the 90'S as well. Some things never change.

Beach or desert (snake charmer) - you're both right. A lot of surf rock borrowed scales and modes from middle eastern music. Metal does a lot of the same because it sounds exotic. We also have western musicians using quarter tones and things like that now. Maybe someday Western ears will be used to more than 12 notes.

It’s so funny that lex was doing those old school dance moves because I’ve always done the swim dance to the same part, which is old school too 😂😂😂

I remember watching this live 20 odd years ago. They pulled a guy out from the stage for the whole song. He was dancing around on the stage like a lunatic & would come in to sing the "You Gotta Keep Em Separated" line. Was amazing!

This is one of my favourite Offspring songs. Where they always called The Offspring? I don't remember the "The" part........ Mandella effect maybe?
