Yeah you did berto... That was like a surf guitar riff and Dick Dale was the king of surf guitar. He was known for using Middle Eastern music scales and his father was actually Lebanese. So Brad was right, too with the desert vibes!

Offspring is Southern California, they have a SoCal vibe. They did quite a few songs about social issues. This one was about kid on kid violence at school and the mentality that if you're under 18 you get juvenile punishment. Listen to The Kids Aren't Alright

The whole Smash album is fire. I bought the cassette tape when it came out. I was probably 11. My dad took it from me after hearing the lyrics to "bad habit". Not because of the cuss words, he just really liked the album and decided to keep it. I eventually bought the cd.

The phrase, "Gotta keep 'em separated" came from when Lead Singer Holland was in medical school. At the time, the band was unsure of how to tie the parts of the song together. One day, Holland was experimenting with bacteria in vials. He left the vials of bacteria in a room to let them cool down, came back after an hour or so, and noticed that the bacteria were still warm because the two samples were interacting with each other because the vials were close to each other. Dexter thought to himself, "I gotta keep 'em separated" and decided to use it to tie the new song together. >>

honestly compared to most bands lasting this long, I don't think The Offspring strayed too far from their beginnings. Sure, they've strayed in some ways but it was only in their sense in humor really. I thibk they still stayed in their punk roots more than most punk rock bands.

He was saying how it seems Dexter changed when he started making money, and basically backstabbed the guy who launched his career.

Offspring was just a small punk band when this song absolutely blew up! The label Epitaph run by Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion could hardly cope with the sales. Having their office in a sketchy neighbourhood they had boxes of singles and albums on the street. Shipping them out as fast as they could! Great song, great album.

Berto great singing! The Offspring are a fun punk alt rock band. Also the Middle Eastern/surf guitar style fits California lol. Could be beach or desert. Cali has both. Good ears yall. Lot of punk bands come from California, where these guys are from. If yall ever do a live skate punk stream or any kind of punk stream, these guys would def be on the polls. They have a little hip hop feel in some of their songs too. I was in high school when this group hit the mainstream. My kiddoes love The Offspring too. Very catchy. Their music videos are pretty unique too. This song is about the gang violence which was terrible during the 90s in California. Song is socially conscience which is typical of punk music. Hip Hop's cousin in a way. LA vibe. I grew up in SoCal. Most of us listened to rap, punk, alt rock, grunge, ska punk, everything growing up. Esp us GenXers. . Their singer is a nice dude too and very smart. Multiple college degrees. Do some Cypress Hill in the future too. They are also from LA. They do rap and rock.

I saw The Offspring in concert in the 90's when they toured for this album. It was the most fun I've ever had at a concert! I lost one of my shoes crowd surfing in the mosh pit and had to wait until the lights came back on after the show was over so I could ask security to find it up on stage. Someone threw it up there at some point. About 20 other people were standing there with me, all of us missing one shoe. Remember kids, always double-knot your shoelaces before entering the mosh pit!

Good observation on the guitars. A lot of surf punk riffs like that have a lineage going back to riffs from 60s rock that had heavy Indian sitar inspiration. Hippy rock took a lot from the Asian spiritualist movement of the era.

Offspring were like three years behind me at my HS. A friend of mine taught "Noodles" how to be an elementary-school janitor while both were in college. The lead singer, Dexter Holland, was valedictorian in HS and has a PhD in molecular biology from USC.

Beach or desert (snake charmer) - you're both right. A lot of surf rock borrowed scales and modes from middle eastern music. Metal does a lot of the same because it sounds exotic. We also have western musicians using quarter tones and things like that now. Maybe someday Western ears will be used to more than 12 notes.
