I take the blame for this if the fans think you should have done Let It Be first, since I suggested Abbey Road first. However, I think what's most important is that you do both Abbey Road and Let It Be (as you will) as opposed to what order you do them in.

"Show me that I'm everywhere" - most of George's songs from this time on are heavily influenced by Indian religion and eastern mysticism. "Get me home for tea" is the grounding englishness that would never leave, I guess... The heavy rock sound wasn't particularly noteworthy when the album was released, but it was actually recorded in the summer of 1967 and sat on the shelf for 18 months while the movie was made.

George bought one of the first Moog synthesizers IN THE WORLD and was experimenting with it. It's keyboard-based but has 'blocks' of circuitry that can be sort of mixed-and-matched, and it's almost a musical kaleisdescope - a twist of a knob here opened up whole new sounds, a punch of a button, a connector for another wire, etc, etc.

Crystal, you're doing a great job reacting to the Beatles' post-1966 albums! You're so perceptive and musically knowledgeable. The song "Yellow Submarine" is originally from the Revolver album (from 1966), which you should definitely react to. Revolver was the album that preceded Sgt. Pepper.

Gonna throw this out there.....You should do the "Let It Be" album next, and do "Abbey Road" last. Let It Be was written/recorded first. Abbey Road was written/recorded afterward with the intention of being the bands farewell.
@jeremyb5640
@jeremyb5640 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. On 'Let It Be', only 'I Me Mine' was recorded after 'Abbey Road' and even then there's a version of them playing it in the movie. The accepted story that 'Abbey Road' wasn't intended to be the last album has been debunked in recent years though. There's a tape of a meeting between John, Paul & George in autumn 1969 where they discuss the next album and a Christmas single. Sadly, it never happened.

It doesn't really matter. All the songs on "Yellow Sub" was recorded before "The White Album", right? And "Abbey Road" was not recorded with the intention of being the band's farewell, that's completely erroneous. Both "Abbey" and "Let It Be" act as apt "last albums", you can do it either way.

Why not listen to abbey road first? Everyone in the free world listened to abbey road and then let it be. The Beatles got together in the studio to film the video for their upcoming single Lady Madonna, a song that had already been recorded. Rather than just mime to the song, they decided to record a brand new song while they were there! John had Hey Bulldog (originally Hey Bullfrog), so they were filmed recording that instead. Years later, the Lady Madonna video was deconstructed and put back together with the proper audio from Hey Bulldog! Now available on the Beatles' official KZbin channel.

Great analysis! Always fun to watch :) As others have pointed out: the Yellow Submarine" EP was really just a soundtrack of songs that had either been previously released (or unreleased) and were cobbled together for the film. So, in that sense, Yellow Submarine isn't a Beatles album proper.... Lastly: among Beatles purists, the *final* Beatles album is Abbey Road, *not* Let It Be. This is because: Abbey Road was recorded after Let It Be. However, Let It Be was shelved & only released in 1970, *after* The Beatles had broken up. So, to consider Let it Be their last album is dubious, at best. (Considering Let it Be to be their last album would be like saying The Beatles "Anthology" albums are their final albums simply because they were realized after Abbey Road & Let it Be... but clearly, that simply wouldn't be accurate.) Also something to note about Let It Be: the "real" Let It Be will likely never exist. This is because Phil Spector was given the shelved project to "produce" & did a rather slapdash job of choosing random songs and then lazily applying his "Wall of Sound" production values to a Beatles record... and it was a record that was somewhat meant to be an R&B, "back to the basics" rock 'n roll album. Not "boisterous & schmaltzy". Big mistake. Like, who needs a choir on "Across the Universe"? Nonsense. Regardless, love your reviews, analysis, and your enthusiasm as you continue your journey through The Beatles' albums, all the best!

@@Sweetish_Jeff_ Some of the remasters are great! Some of them are not great. And worst of all, some of them are inconsistent (some songs great, some songs not great). The reason: they didn't remaster them as albums, they remastered them song by song. Which is absolutely idiotic (and short-sighted). I'm also not into bringing out the bass drum and the bass at the expense of the guitar blends, which are hallmarks of the Beatles sounds. Some albums sound great (the first one, for instance). Some are wildly inconsistent (the electric stuff on White Album sounds great; the acoustic stuff sounds terrible), some are mostly ok (Magical Mystery Tour)....I think "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" sounds great.....I think "Come Together" and "Something" sound like s**t. As far as those moronic remixes, at best they are for someone who knows the originals....they are in no way substitutes for the original mixes and quite frankly, I prefer rough mixes of all those songs that are already available on bootlegs. I'm not into, say, removing the double track of George's vocal on "Only A Northern Song" so you can feature an absolute tuneless, not-particularly great vocal performance. It was double-tracked for a reason. The entire "Yellow Submarine" movie was completely ruined by the remixes and, even worse, re-recording the original score (abysmally). The absolute crappy remasterings plague ALL of the music from that period, not just The Beatles. For instance, they have totally destroyed the Moody Blues catalog, de-"pyschedelicized" it, destroyed the blends of the instruments. It's great that they bring up the bass on this stuff (the easiest thing to do in mastering), but I'm not so into low-end that I want it to destroy the mixes that greater artists and engineering staff did back in the day.

2:08 -The in-joke to “Only a Northern Song” is: “…out of dissatisfaction with his status as a junior songwriter with the Beatles' publishing company, Northern Songs. The lyrics and music convey his disenchantment at how the company retained the copyright for the songs it published, and at how, following its public listing in 1965, the major shareholders profited more from his compositions than he did.” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Only_a_Northern_Song

This was kind of a throwaway album. They were contractually obliged to release a 3rd film, but really couldn’t be arsed, so the songs made for the soundtrack reflected that. 2 of them were old songs, Only a Northern Song and All Too Much were recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions, All Together Now was recorded during the Magical Mystery Tour sessions and Hey Bulldog during the White Album sessions. They didn’t even provide their own voices in the film.

I have loved the Beatles for decades, and I now love your educated reaction to their work. I would love to see your reaction to their movies as well. Great reaction, I also always found this album charming. Most critics consider this their worst album; seems like it’s weird using that word in describing a Beatles album. I particularly love your Beatles reactions, because you seem to have a solid foundation in music for one so young, yet you combine that with a youthful passion for fun and digging a good groove. I look forward to your future reactions as there are some great albums yet to come!

George's songs by this time of the Beatles where some of best music - in my opinion - that they made... 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is his masterpiece; 'Blue Jay Way' is a fabulous creepy spaced-out wonder, And I adore 'It's All Too Much', with it's high guitar feedback and distortion, and more of what I always describe as Ringo's 'baggy' sounding drumming.... ie: It's very loose and chaotic, and inventive sounding, whilst being totally tight and never missing a beat.... Ringo used it a lot on Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, and the White album! George though, was always very under-rated as a Beatles songwriter, and as much as I love most of their other songs, I've always had a 'thing' for George's songs -always taking a more minor chord, or diminished chord sound and crafting it into something wonderful...... Another beauty of his is 'If I Needed Someone' off the Rubber Soul album... Oh that is magnificent as well!! :-)

Just an FYI, even though "Abbey Road" came out first, "Let It Be" was actually recorded first, then put on a shelf. You can really listen to them in either order, depending on your philosophy of what constitutes first and last. The poetry of the situation is that the last song of "Abbey Road," literally the last song of the Beatles in the studio, is titled "The End." Also, even though I grew up with the original Phil Spector over-produced version of "Let It Be," where he annoyingly added a symphony and choirs, the stripped-down "Let It Be... Naked" remix is far superior and is how the band intended it to sound since they were trying to "get back" to their live roots without all the studio trickery. You can find it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJeVpI2Dbc-UqpY

@@MrKeychange John and George both liked the work Spector did on Let it Be and they both used Spector to produce their first solo albums after leaving the Beatles. The Spector Let it Be is the one getting the upcoming 50th anniversary remix treatment. Naked was never meant to replace Let it Be. Have you heard Paul's later live recordings of The Long and Winding Road? He uses strings just like the ones on the Spector version.

Yellow Sub is from "Revolver", "Only A Northern Song" is something that was left off "Sgt. Pepper", and "All Together Now" & "It's All Too Much" were recorded right after "Sgt. "Yellow Submarine"-it's a children's song yet so much fun to sing and it conveys a party atmosphere full of sound effects. BTW, the woman you hear laughing and screaming during the "and our friends are all aboard..." is Pattie Boyd, George's first wife. "Only A Northern Song"-it was recorded during the "Sgt. Pepper" sessions and almost wound up on "Pepper" and I think you can hear the influence. I always liked it especially the backwards trumpets, tape loops, etc. "All Together Now"-very similar to "Yellow Submarine". I agree with you, Crystal, that this sounds a lot like a campfire song. "Hey Bulldog"-one of my favorite Lennon rockers and that BASS. Wow. Lennon plays the guitar solo here, too, and it is so good. "It's All Too Much"-Years ago, I put the opening guitar feedback on that song as my outgoing voice mail message. LOL I once played this track to a woman years ago and when she heard the feedback she thought it was very similar to Jimi Hendrix. Psychedelic psycho jello. And I also love the trumpets. It kind of feels like a lost "Pepper" track, too. "All You Need Is Love"-such a simple song yet so sincere. It has been mocked and ridiculed by some which I never really understood. What is so wrong about unconditional love for all things living and non-living? It's a very spiritual song IMHO and I also love that guitar solo, but what I really love is how they incorporated fragments of "Green Sleeves", "Brandenburg Concerto", and "In The Mood" towards the end. Genius.

Use ad blockers, I never see any ads on You Tube. Did you notice that George had 2 new songs of the 4? That's because 'Only a Northern Song' was written for the "Sgt. Pepper's" album but their producer thought he could do better, he rejected it. He came back with 'Within You Without You'. He also came up with the glorious 'It's All Too Much' for the film, one of the most overlooked Beatles tracks I think, it's epic. In later years Apple released the Yellow Submarine Songtrack which cuts the score and replaces it with Beatles songs heard in the film.

The title track is from their 'Revolver' album from 1966. And 'All You Need Is Love' is ,as you know, from 'Magical Mystery Tour.' 'Yellow Submarine' is an odd album as it only contains 4 new Beatles tracks. The George Martin orchestral tracks on side 2 are interesting ,but, the Yellow Submarine 'Songtrack' ,released in 1999, is really worth getting into as it has some glorious re-mixes of songs including: 'yellow Submarine' ,'Nowhere Man' and the George Harrison tracks 'Only a Northern Song' & 'It's All Too Much'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Submarine_Songtrack Hear the album here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJCtknd6mN58f7c

I'm from London, and i am old enough to remember my grandparents had a piano in their front parlour, and everyone would sing songs, you could buy sheet music, but everyone knew the tunes or made up lyrics, the main thing was to have a few beers and stand around the joanna, and no-one cared if you sang out of key, it was about family and community, just singing and laughing, and that was what both John and Paul especially loved and remembered from their childhood. Could you do Steely Dan albums sometime?

You can do "Abbey Road" and then "Let It Be". Some of the songs on "Let It Be" were recorded or overdubbed on after "Abbey Road" (in fact, those songs were done after John had left the band). And "Let It Be" was released a couple of weeks after the news broke that they had broken up (front page news all over the world!), so it's just as fitting a last album as "Abbey Road". They basically have two final albums.
