ELO can be reaaallly poppy - as on Telephone Line - or really rock and/or veer towards proggy influences. For me, their best work is their only "concept" album, Eldorado, which they recorded in the middle of their no-fault run(1973-76). Face The Music (1975) has some pretty rockin' (Poker), proggin' (Fire on High) and poppin' (Strange Magic) tracks.

For a display of ELO's orchestral prowess, I suggest the "El Dorado Overture" that leads right into "Can't get it out of my head"...here's a fanpost that includes some incredible images to go with this awesome song! kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZOrq6hjhb9niqc

ELO were a highly efficient and skilled hit machine in the 70's. A talented classic rock band. They combined rock 'n' roll, blues, and pop with just a little bit of proggy electronics here and there. They're still going in some form and play huge concerts in the UK, most years. If you liked this, check out Livin Thing, Mr Blue Sky, Turn to stone, All over the World, Evil Woman & The Diary of Horace Wimp.

I *adore* your description: “highly efficient and skilled.” I loved ELO for about 5 minutes when they were a thing. I would play their version of Roll Over Beethoven constantly. Then I heard the Beatles’ version. Immediately ELO dropped down from “brilliant” to “efficient and skilled.” A little over-produced. Or a lot. To my teenaged ears, the Beatles sounded raw and came to life during ROB. When I heard Chuck Berry’s version, omigosh. Pure electricity.

ELECTRIC Light Orchestra was an anomaly even in a time of near-universal diversity. ELO started out, not as a band, but as a name for an experimental album by three members of British pop-rock band The Move. When The Move broke up, singer-guitarist Jeff Lynne decided to continue recording under the name ELO. ELO was unusual in that the band included two cellists and a violinist, which added to the lush soundscape of Lynne's songs. ELO managed fuse prog-rock elements with mainstream pop. This was a pop band that 'serious' listeners also loved. Most of the purely pop fans had no idea that they'd previously made a concept album called Eldorado, which described itself as a Symphony. Lynne is a genius of pop, and the records he makes are distinctly his. After the original ELO broke up, he turned that genius hand to producing other people's records. He produced George Harrison's most successful album, Cloud Nine, as well as Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever and Into The Great Wide Open. Lynne, Harrison and Petty were also in a short-lived supergroup called The Traveling Wilburys, along with Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison. And now for something completely different, I very highly recommend as an ELP reaction, the live version of "Tarkus" from their album (takes a deep breath) 'Welcome back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends, Ladies And Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake And Palmer!' I'd particularly like to point out the last section of the piece, "Aquatarkus". You won't believe just how much more analog synthesizers were capable of than their digital replacements. "Aquatarkus" is a tour-de-force.

ELO IS LIFE AND JEFF LYNNE IS A MUSICAL GENIUS!!!!
@EchoesDaBear

The name Electric Light Orchestra is a bit of a play on words (according to founder Jeff Lynne) - they use orchestral elements (violins, cello, etc.), in a 'small' package (in terms of numbers), so essentially, a light orchestra, and electric instrumentation (guitars, keyboards, bass, etc.), so they are an Electric Light Orchestra!! Voila! The well is so very deep with this group! Beatles influences are rife with them (Jeff Lynne was a really good friend of George Harrison - produced several of his records, started The Traveling Wilbury's with him, etc.) Sweet Talkin' Women (would be my #1 recommendation), then go on to: Evil Woman, Mr. Blue Sky (if you saw Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 2, this song was the opening montage), Strange Magic, Can't Get It Out Of My Head, Waterfall, So Fine, Livin' Thing, Do Ya, One Summer Dream....so many amazing tracks! Given your love for Rush, Floyd, pretty much all things good, I think you will really like these guys!

electrickery.... When Paul McCartney died (oh boy) in 1969 after being struck on a level crossing outside Abbey road studios by a VW beetle with a licence plate bearing his initials and his age, the world mourned. A police spokesman at the scene said a school boy by the name of Rocky Raccoon described ''a dark haired Chinese woman screeching like a banshee at the wheel of the VW'' just prior to Paul being struck but no other credible witnesses had come forward at that stage. Investigations ceased after a week, though a freelance photographer captured the fab 4 walking on the pedestrian crossing minutes before the accident. A 'fake' album cover was released days after but was canned due to a public outcry that it was in ''poor taste''. Pauls ashes were later smoked at a simple funeral ceremony in Bob Marleys London residence in Kensington apartments. It was some short while later that an affro haired, sunglass bespeckled warbler from Birmingham who was invited to step into the breach to continue the life of the Beatles as the replacement for the recently departed Paul McCartney by Ringo Star on a rainy Saturday afternoon, in a pub near Saint Pancras station. ''I don't recall that'' said Ringo in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 1972...''I must have been drunk at the time''. It can be revealed now that it was Jeff Lynne who played lead guitar on the roof of Applecorp, not Paul as many have been led to believe. McCartney was in no fit state to play with the band anymore......being dead. Consummate musician and raven haired beauty, Yoko Ono actually agreed after some coaxing to do the makeup on Jeff to look like the now deceased McCartney. (as all the original members were still under an unfulfilled contract with EMI from their days as the Quarrymen) Lynne played his first gig when he joined the band in the summer of 1970 but the former remaining Beatles were restless and inconsolable now that Paul was officially 'awol'. A disillusioned John Lennon left the band after being offered a job selling stationary supplies in Redding. He never played music ever again. ''Imagine that'' he said to Syd Barrett, ''you may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one'' George Harrison and Ringo Star were made an offer to stay on with Lynne but declined in November 1970 due to artistic differences. ''We're not playing that Sergeant Pepper crap anymore'' George was reported to say. Out of money, desperate and high on paracetamol and caffeine, Ringo and George jimmied the front door and removed all the fittings and sound equipment from Apple studios, which they sold on Amazon. Both are currently on the run for unpaid parking fines dating back to the early 1960's, 40 of which were issued in Hamburg in 1962, even though it was actually Pete Best who was in Germany with the band on tour at the time. George later joined a young starry eyed group called Nirvana in 1975 .......but that's another story. At Lynnes sisters birthday party in late spring and with stolen tapes of early Beatles demos, an emboldened Jeff named the band (formerly known as the Beatles) ELO, after a memorable line in a Beatles song ''I don't know why you say goodbye, I say 'elo''. The Tuesday before though, Lynne wrote and recorded 32 songs under the name Klaatu but thought it sounded too much like the Beatles and so he rejected the idea completely and ELO were born on the Wednesday instead. Lennon later tried to sue Lynne for copyright but Yoko was quoted as saying 'John, let it be', let it be, let it be, let it be''. Truly words of wisdom from a wise and thoroughly independently wealthy and talented woman. ....and the rest is history. (this has been an extract from a transcript recorded after playing 'Band on the Run' backwards which Linda McCartney had hidden in a pack of cigarette papers for 28 years....coincidentally the age at which Paul died)

If you haven't already figured it out ELO was a British band.Though they had big hits prior to this . This song really got the Americas to take notice of them. Jeff Lynn wrote and sang every hit they ever had, and is still writing and performing to this day. In the 90's Jeff teamed up with a few other legendary artists , and formed a remarkable band called "The Traveling Wilbury's" Though they were a short lived group . they produced a few real huge hits. The members were a who's who of music history including : Roy Orbison, George Harrison of the Beatles, The legendary Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and of course Jeff Lynn. Jeff's latest song was released a few years ago , it is a fantastic song called "When I was a Boy" recounting how he fell in love with music as a child. The most astounding thing about this song is it's video. The video was directed by Famous Hollywood director Warren Fu , who also directed Star Trek 2009, co directed Star Wars the Phantom menace , and Terminator Salvation. You really need to see that astounding video.

Daniel - Two wildly different songs, each with a surprising lyrical twist. "Message in a bottle" by the police, and "Jessie" by Carly Simon. Message in a Bottle has the most incredible drumming. The drummer punctuates the music, leading then lagging the expected beat in the listener-s brain. Best hi-hat work around. Jessie is just a love of a song. How can you resist a lyric, "Let's drink to the heart that has a Will of its own".

Some groups take time to grow on you . Also if one was born in an era when songs were all under 3 minutes -- ( AM radio ) -- it's just a normal thing . We bought 45 singles - and were happy with them . Up the road when FM played longer songs , there was a lot more to dissect -- especially 'Prog Rock' with all it's changes . Having said that , I think you do an exceptional job in your reactions to a wide range of songs . Very astute and older than your years in perception . Best of luck .

This is a great one. I just learned it this spring. Hey, please check out some Paul Simon. Try One Trick Pony, God Bless the Absentee, or Late in the Evening.

You should do a live ELO tune called, Roll Over Beethoven, @The Midnight Special 1975, that’s the real ELO our generation seen.

Glad you discovered ELO. Nice reaction. Yes, this song is a fair representation of the ELO sound. Very orchestral, incredible melodies and well-constructed tunes. Jeff Lynne is kind of in a class of his own. I see in other comments some excellent recommendations, but heads up, when you give "Mr. Blue Sky" a whirl, do yourself a favor and listen to the complete version and not the stripped down AM radio version! Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/faTak4drr8ugiKc Cheers!

Remember this has nothing to do with anything "electronic" (music or otherwise). It is "electric light" (Electric Light Orchestra).

Mr Blue Sky. If ever a song could make you happy and brighten your day (other than Rush's 'Spirit of Radio' that is) Mr Blue Sky is the next one you should do by ELO. Another great band of its time.

So John Lennon called ELO “Sons of Beatles”. Jeff Lynne is a genius writer, singer, musician, producer. Beyond ELO he produced for Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and masterfully produced Free as a Bird by The Beatles. One of the all time greats
