Daniel, Jim Croce, like John Denver, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Joan Baez and so many others in the 70's were some of the greatest songwriters and singers we might have ever heard. I hope you continue down this awesome road. And keep these songs and singers alive through their music to the next generation and all generations afterward. Peace.

This song reminds me of driving in Northern Ontario at night on the long road trips my boyfriend (now husband) would take to visit his family. Six hours on the road with nothing but forests and the occasional little town to break it up, we would make mixed cd's and play tons of classic rock and folk rock to pass the time. I'm so glad you enjoyed it, it holds such fond memories for me of my late teens and early twenties.

Yes, same with me. I was 9 when Jim died. I remember hearing about it on the news and asked my Dad who he was. He told me that Jim was a great singer, songwriter, and guitar player with awesome songs. He then taught me and my siblings how to harmonize to "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown." We were a singing family with six-part harmony. I have loved Jim's music ever since and still miss him today.

To me this is about living a life of no regrets, unlike the referenced father who probably compromised his dreams for the reality of life. It's both about living a free life and about living a selfish life - free to do as you please, but selfish in that others have to go your way to be included.

So many great songs. IMHO he had the best voice of anyone at the time. Try Where Do the Children Play as a starter. Seriously deep rabbit hole. Ps, Don McLean’s song Vincent may be one of the most beautiful and sad songs ever written. It’s about VVGough.

this song will be an inspiring one...youngsters need to hear and understand these inspiring lyrics with the theme of moving forward, possibility, and hope, coupled with superior song craftsmanship and real instruments, not computer generated. it;s a warmer sound that touches the soul including the strings. While many of my generation were listening to Led Zepplin and noisy testosterone music, I was listening to Jim Croce and all kinds of other music. I became a music teacher. Most of those kids as adults either couldn't play or write music, or gave it up. I still get to play, they don't. Croce had a gift and he was stolen from us by God. I'm still mad at God for that. My favorite line in this song "They can change their minds but they can't change me." Meaning to me if you can't accept me as I am that's your stupid problem. imagine if I listened to these moronic critics all my life. I wouldn't know who I am anymore. I would be someone elses puppet.

It's hard to distinguish how much of Jim Croce's lasting appeal is due to the quality of his work, and how much is due to the suddenness of his passing. Clearly he was an immensely talented artist and performer, and he was able to speak directly to the hearts of millions. But I can't help wonder if he'd be as well thought-of had he lived. We only got to experience the best he had to offer. We didn't have to hear his seventh studio album which showed that he was quickly running out of ideas. We didn't have to suffer through the inevitable Jim Croce Disco album in 1978, or his weird religious period. He didn't record the soundtrack for a cheesy movie, or a pointless duet with Barbra Streisand, or a series of tacky synth-pop videos for MTV. And best of all, we didn't have to see him playing at a casino last year for an audience of 300 people, all of whom were desperately trying to convince themselves that "he's still got it". No, we have an artist taken too soon, at the peak of his popularity and the height of his art. How he would've gotten through the next twenty years of his career will forever be the subject of speculation, not a lurid Behind The Music documentary. All of which is good. It's refreshing to have an artist who never went downhill, never fell victim to his own success, and never let his audience down. That it happened the way it did is tragic, but Jim Croce remains as bright a star now as he was in his prime, because what remains is his prime.
