A lot of it makes sense when you watch Get Back, which is the process behind this very album. You actually see how a lot of the songs evolve: Get Back is born from an improv bass riff; and George had been watching some waltz thing on the telly the night before he wrote I me mine. You see the context (a lot of pressure, but hey, the pressure just makes them better). And you see the love and camaraderie, even in those final days, and their love of music. They were happy when they were being the Beatles.

I find the victimization of George very tiring. Don't understand me bad, I tried in the past to find which song writer I prefer in the Beatles and I never was able to find. I like a lot several songs of George, Paul and John. In my prefered songs there are from the three. I don't want to choose, they add all something. I like the Eclecticism of Paul in his styles and voice. John was often very original, great artist. George was great too: "While my guitar gently weeps", "Here comes the sun", "Something", "Old brown shoe", "Taxman" and more. The number of songs is not so small and he was younger. But he had also at least for me 2 clear plagiarisms: My Sweet Lord, Savoy truffles. I don't understand how not everyone hear it. And in my opinion his solo album All Thing must pass is overrated, and most were composed during Beatles times.

slw - They had every intention of including "Don't Let Me Down" on the album - and the early Glyn Johns' version of the LP had it on the album. But lots of time had passed and the material from the "Get Back" sessions had not been put into any album. So when Apple decided to put out an album in early 1970 which included lots of singles which had not been on a Beatles album... the person making the track order made the decision to include "Don't Let Me Down" on that album (the "Hey Jude" album). And then when the "Let It Be" album finally got to the point where it was actually going to get a release - "Don't Let Me Down" had already just been released on the latest Beatles album release... so they could NOT put it on their next album - which was going to be released very shortly after the "Hey Jude" album came out. It was a mistake that happened because of really poor planning. If the song had not just been on the "Hey Jude" album... it would have absolutely been on the "Let It Be" album. It is probably the biggest mistake that Apple made (putting the song on the "Hey Jude" LP.).

Also, I've Got A Feeling is one of the most energetic Beatle tracks in their entire career. Even if you don't watch the entire 3 part Get Back series, you owe it to yourself to watch the entire rooftop concert which is where that version of I've Got A Feeling comes from. As a musician and composer, I think Caroline would particularly enjoy certain key moments in the Get Back film: 1) Paul composing Get Back right before our eyes, going from mucking around on his bass to a recognizable #1 single in less than 2 minutes, while George yawns. 2). George coming into the studio to introduce I Me Mine after watching a program with a waltz scene in it on TV the night before 3) Paul working out the lyrics to The Long and Winding Road while sitting at the piano before the others arrive for the day. 4) Billy Preston coming into the studio and completely invigorating the band, making Don’t Let Me Down suddenly come alive and sound like the song we all know. 5) The rooftop concert, of course, especially I’ve Got a Feeling and Dig A Pony and then the footage of them back in the studio listening to the playback. One thing I also liked in the film was the way Peter Jackson would let you know through subtitles when you were listening to the performance that ended up on Let It Be.

All of the orchestration you hear on this album wasn’t really intended to be there. The Beatles originally wanted to “get back” to their 4 piece band roots and the intention was to record each track in a live single take without any overdubs. They also had a film crew come in to record their creative and recording process for the album with the intention of performing these songs for a live tv special, their first live appearance since they stopped touring in 1966. At the end of the day, none of the Beatles were satisfied with the material so they shelved it and decided to record Abbey Road. It was only until after Abbey Road was released did they go back to finish the album, but by then Lennon had quietly quit the band, and the tapes were turned over to Phil Spector to produce, and he added the orchestration. The “Get Back” documentary gives really good insight into the creation of this album.

Couple of notes... You were wondering if their short jokey songs were songs that were works in progress. From the Get Back documentary, those songs were really just them messing around in the studio. This whole album was edited together using 20+ of hours of recordings well after the fact, and sometimes they just threw in some of the messaround stuff. You mentioned One After 909 sounds like one of their earlier songs. Great catch because it was one of their first songs they wrote together. It was a song they used to play in their early gig days, have a demo recorded in like 1960, and then when trying to record tracks for this album/live show decided to break out one of their earliest songs and re-record it.

Once you’re done, you should consider a listen to Let It Be Naked which has all of the Phil Spector orchestration stripped away, the Black Album which is a compilation of some of the best solo works from the early 70s, and the Love album which was done for Cirque de Soleil and was produced by Giles Martin - George’s son. I think Ringo's drumming is overlooked so often because it fits the songs so perfectly, it almost doesn't seem to be a thing on its own but just kind of appeared there as part of the other music. Ringo didn't try to stand out as a drummer, he just wanted to play what was right for each song. In this he excelled, and that is what makes him such a great drummer.

There's been so much controversy about this album ie how the tapes were left on the shelf and then it was "Spectorised" with strings and choirs to McCartney's displeasure, but watching your honest reaction makes me realise what a bloody good record it still is. I quite like the arrangement on Long and Winding Road but the big mistake was to leave Don't Let Me Down off the album. Considering that was one of the numbers they did for the rooftop concert that decision seems utterly bizarre - and it's a good song anyway.

Yes, I've always felt the Spector production had a charm and even "genius" of it's own. The arrangements for "Across The Universe" and "The Long and Winding Road" are both quite beautiful and effective, especially the rising string passage during the break of "the Long and Winding Road". George Martin used to say the liner notes should have credited Phil Spector with over-production, but some of that can be put down to professional rivalry....

"I've Got A Feeling" is something of a genius move imho because it was basically 2 songs for the price of 1; Paul and John both wrote songs of a similar tempo and a similar key, but both were stuck for how to finish them... so they decided to blend them. "I've Got A Feeling" from Paul blended with "Everybody Had A Hard Year" from John to make a rock/proto-metal/blues collage. I've always liked "The Long and Winding Road", and yet I find it a bit overproduced; which makes sense since the "Let It Be" album as originally released in 1970 was produced by Phil Spector. He was well known for something called "the Wall of Sound", which he called "a sound so strong that if the material was not the greatest, the sound would carry the record." "Let It Be... Naked" (2003) is closer to the original intent; the best recording I've heard of this material is the 2021 "Let It Be" (Super Deluxe), which was mixed by Giles Martin (son of Beatles producer George Martin).

The Let it Be album was often panned, partly due to the reported fighting and they didn’t finish it before moving to Abbey Road. It’s truly one of my favorite Beatles albums and that’s saying alot given the wealth of premium material these guys put out in less than 10 years. It has a raw rock sound, back to their roots, which was their intent. And the Get Back film blew the constant fighting theme totally out of the water. They had some initial issues with George leaving, they got past it. What you see in that film is those guys really enjoyed playing together, even though they were acting up a bit much for the cameras in the studio. It was hard work, but especially on the rooftop concert it’s pure joy among the four, plus adding Billy Preston gave them something fresh. Even the Yoko constant presence doesn’t appear to bother the other three that much, or maybe they just got used to it by that time after the White Album.

As a 65 year old that basically grew up with the Beatles it's incredibly amazing to me to watch someone as young as yourself, and with your musical background dive into their work and break it down and enjoy it as much as I have. The Beatles also released Let it Be Naked a stripped down version that didn't have the orchestration on The Long and Winding Road, and Across the Universe. When the Beatles finished Let it Be it was shelfed. They didn't release it until after Abbey Road was released. Paul McCartney's idea for Let it Be was for the group to go back to basics. Producer Phil Spector was brought in to finish it up for release. Paul McCartney wasn't happy with it when it was released, he didn't want the orchestration added. I have to say, it is my favourite Beatles album. In a similar vein like Sgt. Peppers, everything fits together and it's a journey. However, it feels much more intimate than any other Beatles album. And the songs on it are killer, too (I Me Mine, Across the Universe, The Long And Winding Road, I've Got A Feeling and Let It Be are among the best of their career - and that's just half the album). Abbey Road is my second favourite album. But only second favourite, as it does not sum up everything the Beatles stood for the way Let It Be did. Let It Be conains all the humour and "We don't take this too seriously" attitude they had. It contains stripped down performances and full-blown orchestras, without making it sound incoherent. It does contain "filler" songs like "Dig it" or "Maggie Mae", but unlike other "fillers" like "Wild Honey Pie" or "I will", they really are important cornerstones to the vibe of the album.

Though in watching her listen to it, I'm realizing how my opinion of the album differs from older Beatles fans because A) I don't have the nostalgia since I only started liking the Beatles a few years ago, and B) I only know Phil Spector as the guy who deserved every minute he got in prison so I have no respect for him or his work. It's not AS bad to me anymore as it was, but I still will never pick this over the Naked or 2021 versions.

Caroline, the version of this album you listened to here is what was originally released to the public in 1970. But there's quite a backstory to how it was edited and mastered before release. First, this is the album that was literally made right before our eyes in Peter Jackson's "Get Back" that was released over Thanksgiving and will be out on BluRay eventually. It's still available on Disney if you're up for REALLY getting into this album and a very in-depth look at the Beatles working and writing in the studio. It's fantastic. After the Beatles finished the "Let It Be" (or now what everyone would call the "Get Back" sessions and rooftop performance), these tapes kinda sat around collecting dust as the Beatles were going through the vestiges of their breakup over the calendar year of 1969 (these recordings were all made in the month of January 1969). The Beatles did feel like they needed to do one better album before they called it quits, so they went back to their old EMI Abbey Road Studio where they started and made the Abbey Road album. That was released BEFORE the Let It Be album. As Abbey Road was released, the Beatles had officially called it quits, and also got into serious legal fighting amongst each other which lasted years. Meanwhile, these Let It Be tapes were shuffled around and landed in the lap of early 60s "Wall of Sound" producer Phil Spector (The Ronettes, Righteous Brothers) where his signature production technique included adding a literal "wall of sound" to the basic rhythm track of a song. Orchestras, extra brass sections, strings, choirs, multiple saxophones..... he always made his recordings sound "huge". So, as you will certainly see in the docuseries if you watch it (sorry for the tiny spoiler here), the Beatles were intent on making this album sound "stripped down"..... just a lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, drums, Billy Preston on keyboards, and their vocals. And they also wanted it all LIVE. No overdubs, no editing - Glynn Johns was producing the album for them and they basically told him to hit record on the tape and they will play the complete song all the way through on one single take, and that's what has to make it on the record. Phil Spector gets the tapes and things "man, Let it Be and Long and Winding Road need the wall of sound"...... so he adds the wall of sound and for the first 40 years or so those are the versions of those songs that the general public knows. Paul McCartney was pissed. I assume so was John Lennon. That was the LAST thing they wanted on those tracks. To them, he ruined them. And many people would agree, no one should have touched those tapes. Those songs were recorded as the Beatles wanted them, they weren't Phil Spector's to screw around with. Now there is the "Let it Be - Naked" album available, which has those songs as the Beatles intended, and there's also the complete Glynn Johns mix who should be credited as the album's producer - NOT Phil Spector!

John was entranced with Phil Spector just as he was with Allen Klein. I think John was simply intrigued with the new sound of something “different” and was less concerned with the actual quality of the production since he thought the whole idea behind the album and most of the songs were rubbish anyway (I disagree!!!) While I personally don’t like Spector’s version of the album, I understand the appeal of it. When I heard the Naked version of the album it was SO ridiculously good it’s all I’ll listen to now. I also prefer the single version of “Let it Be” produced by George Martin-it’s the one I grew up with and is probably my favorite Beatles song ever.

Hi Caroline! Really enjoy your perspective, as always. You might be intrigued to know that the music in the MIDI breakdown of Across The Universe was added in post-production by Phil Spector - some eight months after the original recording. The song initially consisted of John's vocals and three acoustic guitars, with a wash of synthesizer near the end. John was quite happy with Phil's production, but Paul was not - particularly what Phil did to "The Long and Winding Road". In an interview from the 1990's, George Martin described the Let It Be sessions as the Beatles returning to their roots - playing stripped down arrangements of their songs. John insisted that, unlike for previous records, no post-production steps be made to fix flubbed notes, which led to songs with multiple takes, but none of the takes being clean. John was in favor of putting the whole mess out as is (he said "We might as well show the public what we sound like with our knickers down"). In the end the tapes sat on the shelf for 8 months, until John turned the tapes over to Phil Spector. Phil gave the songs the Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" treatment, which is the Let It Be album we know today. Phil must have passed the tapes through multiple channels, because what stands out to me is the muddiness of the mix. This is what made George Martin's remix of the original tapes in 2004 such a revelation. The vocals and instruments are suddenly crisp and clear, and the original stripped-down intent is honored. I respectfully recommend you listen to the Let It Be ... Naked album - just for comparison. You don't need to do a video on it, but if you mentioned your reaction in passing on a future video, I would enjoy what you have to say. Keep up the great videos, you are a ray of sunshine in an increasingly grumpy world. 😊😊

The song was earmarked for their first album "Please Please Me" in '63 with the band recording unfinished versions of it during those early sessions which were subsequently released in the Anthology series in the 1990s.

The Long And Winding Road is easily my favorite track on the album. It's funny to think that the guys did not actually want it to be that orchestrial and wanted it to be stripped back, but I think this is probably one of the most beautiful orchestrations ever made and it is what gives the song the cherry on top. Thank you George Martin! EDIT: I was already thinking I might be wrong be thanking George Martin, because I was unsure. So yes, thank you Phil Spector in that case.

After "Get Back" was abandoned, the studio had hundreds of hours of The Beatles, and you can't let that sit there unsold! But The Beatles had abandoned it. George Martin wasn't involved. Phil Spector was hired to come in and make something presentable. He's the one who decided the string/brass arrangements, and the additional of the choir on Long and Winding Road. The thing is, while I respect Paul McCartney's opinion, I gotta say Phil Spector just may have gotten it right. When you listen to the stripped down version of Long and Winding Road, you say to yourself, "Gee, didn't Paul hear all the possibilities here?"

@@RDRussell2 I think my personal favorite version (again IMHO) is Long and Winding Road from the "Give My Regards to Broad Street" album. I am also one of those who consider Abbey Road as their best album, but this is because they were achieving a constant evolution, it was a shame that it was their last album. If you enjoyed Let It Be, you have to watch the Get Back documentary, it's wonderful to see their creative process and also understand that the path was leading them to the need to do separate projects in order to continue growing. I recommend that if you watch the documentary you do it after making your reactions to Abbey Road because while they were recording Let It Be several songs from their latest album were outlined. And we also expect what is very difficult for those of us who enjoy the music of the Beatles, to make a list of what are your favorite songs from the beginning to the end. Let itBe was my first Beatles album and my mother got it for me for Christmas 1970, months after it was releases. I was and loved it but knew as much about their history as you sis when you started this journey. Those songs are all ingrained in my head. I’m not surprised about anything anymore, so when you hear something and it catches your attention, it is something that I take for granted and expect it to be there. "The Long and Winding Road" also had controversy when Phil Spector remixed it during the final touches for the Let It Be album. McCartney was so angry when he heard Spector's overdubs, that he wrote a sharp-tongued letter to Allen Klein that said: "Dear Sir, In future no one will be allowed to add to or subtract from a recording of one of my songs without my permission. I had considered orchestrating 'The Long and Winding Road' but I decided against it. I therefore want it altered to these specifications: 1. Strings, horns, voices and all added noises to be reduced in volume. 2. Vocal and Beatle instrumentation to be brought up in volume. 3. Harp to be removed completely at the end of the song and original piano notes to be substituted. 4. Don't ever do it again. Signed, PAUL McCARTNEY cc: Phil Spector, John Eastman"
