Daniel Thanks for that. Great review and great song. Wow! I've never been a follower of Mannfred Mann but I gotta say that song is very cool, sounds like early-mid '70s. Sounds a lot like Queen, in fact I can imagine Queen covering this song before they became popular in '75. Love the instrumentation, singing, arrangement, the choir. These guys applied good music-theory, as well. That's very important. Fantastic lead vocals, sounds a lot like Freddie Mercury. Excellent.

Big Project fan here too, but the bands arrived at a similar point from opposite directions. The Earth Band was always a killer live band (still are) and only slowly became more "produced" whereas the Project never played live for many years :) The Chance album could be described as a Manfred Mann Project album since almost every song has a different singer...

It's nice that Manfred Mann's Earth Band is appealing to a new generation. "The Road to Babylon" is from a later time with the singer Chris Thompson. My favorite album is" Messin "with Mick Rogers as the singer. The Bob Dylan compositions "Father of day, father of night" and "spirits in the night" are also great songs by the band.

If you like the feel of this song Daniel and the feel of The Magician's Birthday by Uriah Heep you may actually like Rainbow's song Stargazer or The Butterfly Ball which was the theme song to a 1970s rock event featuring bands/musicians such as Deep Purple, Rainbow, etc with legendary actor Vincent Price narrating. It was like a fantasy fairytale come to life through the music and narration.

Haven’t heard this in a long time. Great song. You’ll have to check out Blinded by the Light which was a big hit. A personal favorite was their version of Mighty Quinn, which he had released with his earlier band that was just called Manfred Mann. Both versions are great, but especially like the Earth Band’s rendition.

I have ‘the roaring silence’ on cassette tape but for some reason did not buy a CD when tape ‘died’ as a medium It’s probably in my attic with hundreds and others and serves as a huge reminder to go open up the crate and check out what else I failed to replace as I am sure there are many other gems that have dropped off my musical radar. My friend got a Manfred Mann 45 rpm record out of a bag of potato chips as a gimmick many years ago. The song was called "My Name Is Jack", check it out sometime groovy catchy song from the 60's a bit child-esque but you can see the bands progress from then to this song.

Messin - Buddha, Black and Blue Solar Fire - Pluto the Dog is a funny little song Nightingales And Bombers - Time is Right, Visionary Mountain The Roaring Silence - Questions, an instrumental one And on the album called 2006 there is a song called Frog that was a little story Manfred loved to tell. Funny little story.....worth listening just because of that :-) Enjoy

For me, the best albums by the band are ''Solar Fire'' and ''The Good Earth''. There was an earlier incarnation of a Manfred Mann band called MM Chapter III - and their two albums are a great amalgamation of free-jazz and psychedelic rock (eg songs: One Way Glass, Snakeskin Garter, Devil Woman). Trippy stuff.

I'm a huge fan of Manfred Mann's Earth Band ('70s through 2000's). Yes, their cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Blinding By the Light" is the best (the long version). But they have many other tracks, including a cover of The Beatles "Hey Bulldog" which is fantastic. Other MMEB tracks to try are 'Davy's On the Road Again,' 'Questions,' 'You Angel You,' 'Eyes of Nostradamus,' and 'Angels at my Gate.' I call their style Prog Pop (much like the band 10cc, early ELO, and the Alan Parsons Project). Do not confuse MM's Earth Band with his '60s band 'Manfred Mann' (he's the keyboardist and founder of both bands). MM's sound was very much '60s pop ("Doo Wah Diddy Diddy" was their biggest hit in 1964).
@progmeup
@progmeup 3 жыл бұрын
The 60s band was actually far more versatile than their hits suggest. They were perhaps the only British beat band that could take on both blues and jazz with such ease. "The Abominable Snowmann", "Sack O' Woe" or "Groovin'" are nothing like "Do Wah Diddy Diddy". To me MMEB are more rock than pop (Get Your Rocks Off, In the Beginning Darkness or the fast parts in Mighty Quinn are hard rock). Oh and the Bulldog cover is IMO one of the few misfires Manfred ever made ;-) Opinions, opinions...

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon.......................were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World listed by Hellenic culture. The Seven Wonders of the World or the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is a list of remarkable constructions of classical antiquity given by various authors in guidebooks or poems popular among ancient Hellenic tourists. Although the list, in its current form, did not stabilise until the Renaissance, the first such lists of seven wonders date from the 2nd-1st century BC. The original list inspired innumerable versions through the ages, often listing seven entries. Of the original Seven Wonders, only one-the Great Pyramid of Giza, oldest of the ancient wonders-remains relatively intact. The Colossus of Rhodes, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Temple of Artemis and the Statue of Zeus were all destroyed. The location and ultimate fate of the Hanging Gardens are unknown, and there is speculation that they may not have existed at all.

Well your patron has amazing taste in music, this is a great song by these guys and there are many more. Spirits in the night, I see you did Blinded by the light, awesome, another over looked song is singing the dolphin through, and the runner are just a taste of some of their best songs. These guys were active 60's (another form), 70's 80s 90s 00's and so on. They do a lot of covers but make them their own in many cases. Blinded by the light is a perfect example of how they took a great song by Bruce Springsteen and cranked it up to 11 to quote Spinal Tap, because 11 is one more better than 10 There will be times, like for me when I first listened to this song at 15 in 85, that you feel eh that wasn't too great or something was off putting such as the vocal intro. But I learned in my teens that some songs take time to grow on you and time to appreciate what they were going for, and this is one of those songs for me. I was put off at first but over time, giving it several listens I really started to appreciate a lot of their more obscure non radio friendly songs including this one. This became one of my favorites, so don't feel bad if it doesn't hit you first listen, feel free to be honest about that, but give them a chance by listening to songs that you don't feel initially several times. Some songs need that time to appreciate what they are and many will become songs you truly appreciate.

I like that you noticed the album cover - MMEB had a couple really great ones from Messin' onward. This also ties in with the title of the stupendous 7/4 instrumental funnily titled "Waiter, There's a Yawn In My Ear"! That one really goes off into outer space. I like your interpretation. Obviously this is full of metaphors but with the biblical context. Anyway, this song is good proof why Chris Thompson in his prime was one of THE best rock vocalists. The line "the empty sound of sorrow", holy moly! Also, Dave Flett is such an underrated guitarist; this solo is just as good as the one in "Blinded by the Light". Regretfully, Manfred has no synth solo here (I consider him to be the best soloist on the Moog, not in a show-off-y way at all), but the way he underpins the song with mellotron choir/strings and synth soundscapes is still magical. Drummer Chris Slade later joined AC/DC not once but twice! Finally, as others have said, the abrupt ending works in the LP's context. It's one of those albums that really works well from start to finish, several of the songs have that same majestic feeling (which they first perfected on "Father of Day, Father of Night", still with Mick Rogers on vocals and guitar - perhaps the best MMEB song). And so does "Watch", which is a bit lighter sounding but pretty much flawless. If nobody has reacted to the spine-chilling keyboard solos on "Martha's Madman" or the totally reworked "Mighty Quinn" (which also rocks like hell at parts, with a really burning organ) yet, well... As for the band name, Manfred always had the problem that his name was also the name of his first band, so he kept adding things to his name in order to distinguish between the eras. Manfred Mann Chapter Three (very interesting band, btw), Manfred Mann's Earth Band (which has a nice ring to it - they also considered "Elastic Band", "Arm Band" and "Head Band"!), Manfred Mann's Plains Music (an album based on American Natives' songs) and Manfred Mann '06... it wasn't until 2014 that he released a solo album under his own name, the also very interesting and modern "Lone Arranger".

The intro sounds like something that should have been in the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack. Then we get to the trippy 70s psychedelic part. **Sighs** And me having kicked drugs last millennium. Blinded by the (radio b)Light is the only Manfred Mann stuff I've ever heard and, didn't want to hear anymore. BBTL was probably the most overplayed (and despised) song ever sending generations to their deaths on dark, rainy nights changing the channel.. Too bad the radio didn't play their good stuff. I'd have some of it if they did. PS_ PLEASE, for the love of God, DON'T DO BBTL. It's an OK song but most of us are burned out on it for eternity.
