I'm surprised that more people are not talking about it, but Calypso's line "For once, I wish you would lie and say-" followed by Odysseus' line of "I love you". Like bruh, he was absolutely lying. He doesn't love her, not even a platonic sense. He just feels sorry enough that he tried to soften the blow before he leaves.

It’s been speculated by some people that Calypso is using emotional (i think) manipulation by how she doesn’t apologize and practically makes Odysseus feel bad Such as a “I’m sorry that YOU feel that way” kind of way Kind reminder that certain circumstances do not equal consent ❤️ And also Charybdis can be pronounced as “CAR-IB-DUS”
@boiriАй бұрын

I think it's important to consider that Epic's Calypso isn't malicious. It seems the worst she's done in Jorge's version of events was be very pushy, which don't get me wrong is messed up, but doesn't make them fundamentally awful in my eyes In fact, i wouldn't be shocked if in this retelling Calypso gave a sense of companionship, stopping him from jumping off the ledge In standard Mythology though Calypso is awful and genuinely irredeemable
@cyrusellis2114Ай бұрын
I completely agree Make me sad. To see calypso gettin hate on
@suunanigansАй бұрын
in my opinion, it is still somewhat rude to be like “why wont you love me too” and stuff when the VERY FIRST interaction you had with this man was him telling you about his wife. her circumstances are horrible, but that doesn’t excuse being SO incredibly pushy to him after she took one glance at him and decided she loved him. the song kind of gives off the vibe of when people say “im sorry you feel that way” in my eyes😭 it’s sad to think of what she’s been through, but idk it just doesnt excuse it or make it okay to make someone else extremely uncomfortable in a situation they already cant get out of
@arcticlimboАй бұрын
@@suunanigans yea but we have to remember they don't have the same human emotions. That's kind of the whole point of her not understanding his feelings. She just never will. From her perspective she could save him. She could be his solution just like he could be hers. Her perspective is just so sad
@suunanigansАй бұрын
@@arcticlimbo TRUE i did forget that she can’t really understand humans as a goddess😭 her story and the things shes gone through is very heart breaking but imo it still doesnt fully excuse the behavior, even if she cant understand why its still a very weird situation to be stuck in

@suunanigans yea I'm definitely not condoning it. Simply put she has every right to feel the way she does. And so does Odysseus they live completely different lives. Unfortunately she convinced herself otherwise

When Calypso says ' If you hate me..... Sorry my love was to much for you' it give the same message as sorry not sorry. Like it's his fault for not loving her. When she or anyone else is not and should not expect to be loved just because she loves them. That's not loving someone that's wanting to possess him and rid him of his choices. We know that she didn't let him leave for 7 years. So no, I don't and will not like her. Song is great though. Love your reaction to him seeing home. Admittedly, I cried at that part. Our boy is so so close, painfully so, to home. I just want him to be happy.
@tyrinstale9382Ай бұрын
It's shows lack of maturity when you take that's as of way of interpreting that. She literally apologized for her actions towards him with being pushy and forcing herself on him but not sorrybfor trying to love him when no one else was there to do so
@vic-c2xАй бұрын
@tyrinstale9382 that's your opinion. And this was my. I also don't see how this shows a lack of maturity on my side. When all is said and done she had him for 7 years and a sorry can't negate that. He could have met Telemachus at 13/14 and not 20, helped Penelope avoid the whole suitor problem, Itacha would not be a kingless land for so long. Also weather someone was there to love him or not did not give her the right to force herself in any way on him. A no is a no, be it from a woman or a man.
@ioanzatuiАй бұрын
@@tyrinstale9382It's not a lack of maturity, it's understanding the way she phrased her 'apology'. She keeps using vague language in a way that she can use to shirk responsibility - sorry IF I pushed too hard, if my love was too much for you. 'If' makes it sounds like it might not have been the reason he was hurting, and by pinning it on HIM by saying he couldn't handle it and not by admitting she was hurting him by pushing herself onto him it gives her a way to dull the effects of her actions. Even her sharing her story and crying and mention how SHE is hurting is to try and make him feel sympathy or guilt for him wanting/preparing to leave. Notice how she only stopped when he said what she wanted to hear, only to let her down, and then she began to lash out and lose it because her attempts to keep him didn't work. It didn't work on Odyssus, but clearly worked on lots of the fans who now are prioritizing their empathy for Calypso's backstory over the pain she caused Odysseus and her lack of remorse for what she did to him.

you said it perfectly, charybdis was indeed in the same channel as scylla the two are the origin for the phrase stuck between a rock and a hard place. the sirens didnt actually tell him scylla was how they get him but instead the strait you mentioned. The first time they came to the strait they had a sizeable ship of many men ~42 and charybdis is a kill everyone or no one kinda monster so the risk for facing him was high compared scylla who'd only take half a dozen or so men at most and would leave the ship mostly intact. this time ody was on a single raft so he could pay the cost of scylla so braved the charybdis but was easier on a raft to not be sucked into the whirlpools

What's funny is that Calypso isnt cursed to fall in love with whoever shows up to her isle, that's only in Percy Jackson. Nothing compelled her to do the things she did to Odysseus other than her own wishes and needs. And it shows how his pain matters little to her because even when he tried to speak up, she silenced him, and when her last ditch effort to manipulate him into staying with her (by sharing her sad story) didn't work she got mad and lashed out at him. Calypso being imprisoned is a sad circumstance, but she's older than Zeus and her loneliness or supposed naivety doesn't excuse the pain and trauma she caused him.

My take on Calypso is that the first half of her song is her trying to emotionally manipulate Odysseus into staying of his own volition and when he chooses to leave anyway she switches into hating that she loves him. I was heated when she said "Let me speak!" like bitch you had seven years to form a friendship with Odysseus but we all know he tried to throw himself off of a cliff. I can't feel bad for her even if it seems like this version of her was just pushy/flirty and didn't SA Odysseus because she didn't love Odysseus, she was obsessed with having someone like a possession and Odysseus was conveniently there. Also she's on the island for fighting in a war against the Olympian Gods so maybe if she didn't make stupid choices she wouldn't be exiled 🤷♀ kinda on you girlie don't make it everyone else's problem.

Basically, what Calypso said is literally "I'm sorry you feel that way." Like, she doesn't really see the problem with her actions, but she's sorry she reacted that way. And in the end, it looked like she still had a little hope that he would change his mind and stay, because she came with this speech, and when it didn’t work out, she got angry. Of course, she really was sad and what she said was not a lie, but it seems to me that she was subconsciously trying to manipulate him, so that he would stay. Anyway, her story doesn't do her any justice. I feel bad that she was alone, but he made it clear to her in the first minutes that he wasn't interested. But she just decided to ignore it and take what she wanted. And now she plays the victim of circumstances. They could have become friends, but she decided to ignore his feelings and force her love on him in the worst way. Now she acts as if she doesn't understand what she's doing. But how much intelligence does it take to understand a simple "no"? If they hadn't come for him, she would have continued to hold him and use him to satisfy her desires. Knowing how broken he was, how much he missed his wife, and that if he couldn't go back, he'd rather die than stay with her. At least he'd gotten to the point where that thought had already crossed his mind. Pretends to be miserable and innocent...well, she is miserable, but definitely not innocent.
