For those of us around in 78 when Van Halen's debut album came out, this was a time when Disco was King, the new wave movement beginning and Punk was in it's time. Many were saying the older rock was dead. This album came out and put the rock back in. I remember listening to this album upon release and my friends and I are wtf is he doing on that guitar. It just blew everything away at that time. Neil Peart and Eddie gone the same year of cancer. Giants of giants in their fields of music. RIP Eddie

@@cojaysea maybe dead might have been wrong word. But the sound scape was shifting. The Police(78) and Talking Heads(77) were dropping their first albums to add a couple more to some great music I liked at this time. But many of the older bands established only a few or so would stay relevant. And metal was getting it's feet wet more and more. But the Van Halen debut went Platinum within a few months and did well on the charts. And has sold 10 million plus copies since 78. Though rock was far from dead to me Van Halen put a whole new injection to it. To us listeners of Rock, there has always been something to dig into, no matter the time.

It's an "envelope modifying" technique, that cuts/mutes the initial attack on the string and quickly fades-in on it's vibration, already in progress. Eddie does it the manual method, but there are also pedal devices that can emulate this technique.

Edward Lodewijk Van Halen middle name pronounced "lud wick" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Van_Halen was born in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He was a drummer, but Alex wanted to play drums so He switched. He was trained in classical piano, though He was so fast at "copying" that He never really learned to read music. When He met Les Paul (a real person) Les said "There have only been three guitar builders, Me, You, and Leo Fender". Peace & Love.

This live solo is actually a mix of a couple instrumental pieces, Eruption, Cathedral and the opening of a couple others like Mean Street and Little Guitars. Enjoy your Van Halen journey.

Although it's based all around 'Eruption' he's playing segments of other instrumental pieces that appear on later albums, the violin sounding one is 'Cathedral' from Diver Down, the amazing part right after is the intro to 'Mean Street' (my favourite VH tune) off the Fair Warning album....etc.

It's from 1986. 13:21 You asked how he got that peculiar sound of cascading phantom notes: he achied an Harmonic effect - with the left hand he let the string-note ring open (unfretted) whilst simultaneously running his swiftly picking right hand down that open string toward the nut. He maintained the effect by doing the same thing on an adjacent string, and rapidly back and forth.This effect can be achieved on any of the 6 strings. Any guitarist can do it this and it sure looks and sounds cool! My experience goes back to right after they released their debut album: Van Halen I. 1978 May or June I was 14. My older brother and I were visiting our sister's boyfriend. He walks into the room holding a new LP album from a new band. All he said was "Sit back and relax". To say I was blown away would really be an understatement: Eddie's guitar work and tone weree revolutionary. " What is THIS?!!!" As they say, the rest is history. Daniel, I'm so freaking heart broken. But EVH will live on in and through our memories. Thanks for doing this.

Van Halen I came out the year I started playing guitar (1977). There was nobody that influenced my playing more than EVH, especially in my early years. The first time I heard Eruption, I was blown away and could not imagine how he was doing it. I had to wait 3 years to see him live and find out. Now there is KZbin - you get to see him whenever you want :-)

When I was in college, a neighbor and friend was a freelance interviewer who covered concerts for Radio Free Rock, an Indianapolis-based regional magazine. Since her father would not allow her to go to concerts alone, I was enlisted to escort her. And so, I accompanied her and met numerous bands. One of the concerts she was covering was a Firefall show at Market Square Arena. As I was a nighttime DJ on weekends at a local radio station, she relied somewhat on my knowledge of new bands. So, a few weeks before the show she asked if I'd ever heard of some dutch band called Van Halen. I'd never listened to the demo of their first album that the station had received because the program director had not cleared it for airplay. But I had seen it and remembered the cover. That weekend, I "borrowed it" from the station to play for her, knowing the station, would never miss it. We heard the band for the first time together when I played it on my stereo. We were blown away, of course. But the obvious question was, "What the hell was the promoter thinking putting this band on with Firefall?" They had a much softer rock sound. Anyway, her interview was with Firefall, but she reached out to Van Halen's management and got an interview with them as well. So, yeah, I met the band. David Lee Roth did most of the talking during the interview. Eddie was tuning his guitar with an electronic tuner. He didn't say much to us. Alex did more talking than Eddie. The thing that stands out in my memory was what DLR said when Denise, my friend, asked him to describe the band's lifestyle. He said, "Ya know, some bands burn the cable at one end, some burn it at both ends...we take a blowtorch to that sucker."

So good to see you react to this for the first time. Eddie's various techniques are still mind-blowing. An entire generation of guitarists were inspired by him the way the previous generation was inspired by the likes of Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, and Page. This live solo is actually a combination of several of his instrumental efforts, including Eruption, Cathedral, Spanish Fly, and more. What to do next? I highly recommend you do a track-by-track reaction to the whole debut album, making sure to do the original Eruption coupled with You Really Got Me as a single reaction. They are meant to be experienced together. Jump has a great solo, but it is really a pop song - not the first place I would go. Other great tracks: The Cradle Will Rock, I'll Wait, Hot For Teacher, Panama, plus covers of Dancing in the Street (Martha and the Vandellas) and Oh, Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison). There's a ton more - and I haven't even touched on the Van Hagar era (not my personal preference, but worth checking out). Have fun, as always!

When I heard he past I knew every reactor would be exploring and I also knew I would take the journey with you. I'm 54 and these guys came on the scene in my teenage years... However I was already HOOKED on classic rock and Rush... We had radio and then MTV but no Internet free access as you have today. We paid for our musical journeys. I had limited funds and loved Floyd Tull and Rush so much and they had so much already created which was still new to me... I couldn't see spending funds and time to explore Van Halen. Sure I know the hits, we all do, but great solos like this I missed and really enjoyed watching and learning with you. Thank you.

The part around 13:30 or so that you ask about is a right hand muting technique; one's right hand mutes the strings around the upper harmonics near the bridge. Then one just fingers chosen notes. Sounds so awesome. He got that one from Michael Schenker.

Thank you for reacting to EVH. Yes, I did get to meet Eddie and the rest of the band ( David Lee Roth era). It was 1978 and going to see them that evening in concert here in Austin. In the afternoon they were doing a meet and greet at Record Town, and since I didn't have any classes that afternoon I got there early for the M & G. There were about 75 fans allowed in, and then the band showed up. They hung out for about an hour, and it didn't matter who you were they spent equal time with everybody. They each signed glossies, wrote personal notes to everyone, and actually asked questions when they met you to have a short conversation. They were definitely rockers, but were all extremely gracious. And the one thing I remember about Eddie was that sheepish smile he had the whole time. It was a great show that evening, and was fortunate to see VH many times after that, both with Dave and then with Sammy. I will always remember the graciousness of Eddie and the band. The power with which he played was unbelievable.

I was 14 when Van Halen 1 came out in 78. That was like a hammer in the face. Never had I heard anything like that. He paved the way for me to Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. 1979 New Orleans Superdome "Day Of Rock And Roll" I saw him do the original Eruption about 40 feet up on top of the stack of speakers, which he played flawlessly, then on a pneumatic pogo stick, or something, down in 4 seconds he was on the stage with the intro lick to "Your Really Got Me" I was 17 at the time Very Cool Indeed.

EVH's guitar solo on Michael Jackson's BEAT IT contributed heavily to his legendary reputation. AND a true story - to give you an idea of how amazing of a guitarist Glen Campbell was, Alice Cooper was once at a party and ran into Eddie Van Halen and Eddie made a beeline for him and said, "Hey aren't you friends with Glen Campbell"? Alice: "Yes, we're friends and play golf together all the time." Eddie, "Could you give me his phone number? I wanna take guitar lessons from him."

Had friends of mine that toured with VH in mid 80's. Got to meet Eddie and heard all the stories from my friends about the tour. Great stories, funny stories. A real mentor to my buddies. So sorry to hear of his passing.

Truthfully, there isn't a bad song on there. I really appreciated your reverence for him. When Van Halen burst on the scene in 1978 I had to go out immediately and buy their 8 track tape. I had a Jimmy rigged 8 track player in my 1975 Firebird and me and my friends jammed out!

I saw VH open for Black Sabbath in Oct 1978 and Eddie opened with this, He walked out and started shredding! No intro at all. When he finished the crowd erupted!

Just graduated from high school when they released their first album. I had been playing guitar a couple years. Eruption blew our minds... There’s a name for that technique of using the volume knob like that. Thanks! This is therapy for my sad soul...🎵

"Eruption" is about a minute and a half. It appears directly before their cover of the Kinks "You Really Got Me" on their first album-on the radio it often gets played as a lead in to You Really Got Me. The rest of this solo comes from bits of various other instrumentals or techniques. Heard within: "Cathedral", bits of "Mean Street", "Spanish Fly", etc. The opening is a song called "316" which appears two albums later.

It's so great to see someone close to the age I was reacting to the same incredible mans talent I got blown off my sanity from back at the beginning! I thought I was hearing something from another world.No one NO ONE played anything like that before he came along. Period. Now there are many that have learned those techniques but Eddies playing was still more than just mechanical or mathematical. He had feel in his fingers that will never be replaced. You'll hear it in his music as you get to know it better. He was an incredible bluesy rhythm man like mo other as well. Not to forget his writing and inventing his own guitars and the drop "D" tuner on the bridge etc.

When Eddie came along, we had never heard a guitar do what he made it do but, to change the way the world played a guitar! everyone wants to be him or play like him! Making all of the modifications to his guitar too... in 1978 Eddie changed the world of music forever...RIP
