This was from “5150- Live Without A Net”. The year was 1986. Eddie passed away from cancer but left us with hours and hours of some of the best guitar work ever recorded. He actually didn't use an effects pedal for the cello sound. He had a technique where he manipulated the volume up and down rapidly, that he did to create that sound. He was a genius. RIP.

Not only did Eddie compose some pretty complicated pieces of music, he literally invented that guitar he's playing (has a patent for parts of it). He custom built & rewired it from a bunch of different parts (some not even from a guitar...hence its name 'Frankenstein/Frankenstrat/Frankie') & then had the artistic/design sensibility to paint it like that with bicycle paint & electrician's & tape. Did the same thing with his amplifiers...dude could've been an electrical engineer as well. Not knocking Wolfie's massive importance to music, he wrote some insanely good sh!t, but did he ever physically create anything with his own hands or tear down & restructure musical instruments to create original sounds as well?

I’m 54 and I still to this day have tears well up in my eyes and the hair stand up on my arms whenever I hear EVH play the guitar, and that goes for Dimebag Darrell as well, they were pure musical geniuses, and it makes me soooooo sad knowing that I’ll never get to hear them come up with anything new and creative ever again, nobody compares to either of them. I was lucky enough to see the very last Van Halen concert at the Rose Bowl, and I’ll cherish that memory for the rest of my existence on this planet. RIP Eddie and Darrell, I hope they are somewhere collaborating something right now as I type this.

The chello effect is called a volume swell. The pick hand controls the volume, turning up the volume after the pick strike so you don't hear the pick strike making the guitar sound orchestral. 🤘🇨🇦🤘

I had the Great fortune to see these guys Live 16 times and Eddie was Amazing every time...That effect you were asking about where it sounds like a cello is an Eventide H3000 Harmonizer and he twisting the volume control with his right hand to make volume swells...And as far as him being cool and his stage prescence, he was the Greatest with that smoke stuck behind the low E string to that smile...man that smile,it's like he knew the secret to everything but wasnt quite ready to share it with the rest of us mere mortals...The day he died I sat and cried my eyes out...There will NEVER be another like him...

I grew up in the 70's when Van Halen hit the scene. There were guitar heroes like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck and Page but they were all from a previous generation and we always heard stories about all the things we missed with those guys...When Eddie Van Halen arrived, he became an instant legend not only because of his immense talent and then unique style. But also because he was from our generation. To kids of the 70's who were really into music, it was like Eddie was ours and we finally had our own guitar hero.

To answer you question, Aileen, this "Eruption" solo basically combined bits from the "Eruption" solo from the first VH album; "Spanish Fly" from the second album; the intro to "Mean Street" from the "Fair Warning" (4th) album, and the guitar instrumental "Cathedral" from the 5th VH album "Diver Down." Ed would combine solo pieces the audience recognized with worked out bits he hadn't recorded mixed together with improvisation, all flowing together as one longer solo spot. And changed a bit from show to show. A combination of worked out stuff with in-the-moment inspiration.

Very few people ever master anything to the degree to which Eddie mastered the guitar. His playing was so innovative, his techniques so advanced that he forever altered how the guitar is played and perceived in public consciousness. A text book Virtuoso. And a Musician (capital M) to his core. His father was a musician. Music was his lifelong love. He had no backup plan, no other ambition, his entire life all he wanted was to play music.... and he did. His only non music related job was a paper route when he was 12... A job he took to pay for a drum kit. Musician. Capital M. Edward Van Halen is the reason I play guitar. He gifted me with a lifelong love of the instrument and an endless wellspring of inspiration as a player. I was lucky enough to meet him once and express what he meant to me. You know that old saying never meet your heroes? Whomever said that needed to choose a better hero.

When Dimebag Darrell was assassinated Eddie put THAT guitar in the coffin with him. Vinnie Paul, Dime's brother said, "If Dime knew he would've been buried with EVH's Guitar (Frankenstein was the name Eddie gave it) my brother would've said, kill me now!" Now they are both rockin in the heavens! If you listen to Dimebag's guitar solos, or the songs like the end of Cemetery Gates where Dime does those pick squeals that is where he learned it from and made it his own. It's almost poetic how close these 4 people ere. Eddie & Alex were brothers, Eddie played guitar and Alex on drums, and Pantera (Damageplan) was 2 brothers. Dime on guitars and Vinnie on the drums. Now the only one left is Alex Van Halen 😥

Eddie was born in Europe but grew up in the U.S. from 6 years old, so I'd say he is more influenced by American rock with obvious influence from classical European orchestra (to which he learned in the U.S. - California) nonetheless. He was a heavy mix of both sides. 😁

This man was not just an exceptional musician and composer, but also an innovator and creator. He built his own guitars, created things that received patents and basically invented an entire sound (called brown sound) that is definitively VH. When you hear that guitar, you just know who it is. He may have had good and bad times like anyone else, but he was also pretty much known as a nice guy. Almost always with that sweet smile on his face. Legendary in every way and the band are badass in general. You will love Van Halen. Check out the original audio of the actual song Eruption. It's only 2 minutes long and it will melt your face off. Then the official video of Hot For Teacher to appreciate the band as a whole. They had the greatest sense of humor. Goofiness combined with the utmost musicianship.

Funny part is, Ed's said in interviews he was so drunk playing this he didn't remember doing it. He'd been very nervous as this was filmed at the first show of the first tour with Sammy and didn't know how the show would go. So he drank himself into not being so nervous, but doesn't remember playing this entire thing. lol

Eddie was as human as you could get, part of his stage courage was assisted by alcohol, deep down he was scared sh'tless always afraid he would make a mistake, later in life he was able to dry out and come to terms with himself. At 65 seems too young for all of us, but I feel God wanted him back.

I got to see VH in 1980 at the First Ever "Rocklahoma" and was one of the best outdoor concerts I've ever gone to!! When David Lee Roth Picked up one of the Joints thrown up on the stage (there had to be a hundred thrown up there!!) and said "What's This??" and proceeded to Light It UP!! LoL!! This was on VH's "Women and Children First" Tour...."Have you seen Junior's Grades!?!" (If you were there, you know!!) LoL!! And we also got to watch Sammy Hagar, Pat Benatar (and she sang her new hit "Hell is for Children") and the closers, The Doobie Brothers (waited about an hour for them but left after the second song - IT WAS HOT)...But That was a Concert!! Those were the Days!!

EVH is the GOAT. I always say “if he’s not your favorite, your favorite guitar player’s favorite guitar player is Eddie Van Halen” What you saw was an amalgamation of different mini solos that he had played and put on albums that came out before this was recorded. His brother Alex is the drummer, and is IMO the most underrated drummer ever, only due to being in a band with a legend like his little brother. There is a video of the drum solo that Alex played at this same concert.

I’ve seen reactions and the people are like “it’s going to take a lot of practice if you want to play like that”. I on the other hand feel that people like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, and Jimi Hendrix are far beyond what someone can achieve with lots of practice. These people are born with some special gift that transcends practice. What these men have accomplished is simply magical!

I was actually at this concert. New Haven Conn. Around 1985. The most memorable thing was Sammy Hagar, nearly falling from the catwalk above the crowd. He went up there to sing, and he grabbed a bar over his head and started swinging on it. But his feet hit the bar below him on the last swing, and he nearly fell off.

The part where it sounds like a cello is produced by rolling off the string attack with the volume pot. (You can see him do it if you know to look for it). He popularised a lot of these techniques largely because he couldn’t afford a lot of effect pedals when he was younger. But for me, what set him apart from other guitar heroes of his generation was his stunning musicality: His pocket was insane, and every phrase, every note had musical intent. It was never about fireworks for the sake of fireworks, like with so many of his peers. (Can’t believe I’m talking about him in the past tense - I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it).

I used to own that entire concert on VHS. It was called LIVE Without A Net. There is also a drum solo and a bass solo. I wish I could say I was there, but I had many a friend come over to watch, or borrow, that VHS tape. Back in 1987 or so I believe, and I manually transferred the entire audio to a cassette tape too.

That is one moment in my life I will never forget, seeing Van Halen in concert back in the "80's. I idolized EVH!!! The GOAT of the guitar world!! RIP EVH!!!

OMG! The G.O.A.T!! This is what us people who are in their 60s listened to back in the late 1970s while in high school!! Us 60+ year olds have been jamming to Van Halen for over 50 years!! At and around the the 9:50 mark youre going to be introduced to Eddie Van Halen's CELLO solo!! Wait and see, you're going to be blown away! You're on the right track enjoying music like this! When i saw this video for the first time in 1986, i had seen most every video, hendrix, cream, etc......but i was so blown away at 14, that i didnt play drums for a week and just wondered how someone could play so much, so effortlessly, and i didnt hear a bad note, or see any stress in his entire being. Its like a channeling of music. SRV had this power also.

Ok just to start with, thanks for your reaction, i loved your energy and the emotion listening to the GREATEST OF ALL TIME, GUITAR GOD AND ABSOLUTE LEGEND........EVH. that part where he was making the guitar sound like a violin/cello it was a combination of tapping and using the volume knob to cut out the tap sound leaving just the full note, Eddie was a genious and a massive influence in my life, im 53 and grew up with Van Halen and have been blessed with seeing them twice in concert, its been 3 years since Eddie left us and i still get emotional to this very day when i listen to his mastery.......Miss you EVH......5150 FOREVER

I saw him first in 1981 in Portland then two more times in Portland in the 80s then I saw him with Van Hagar in my college town a few years later. Never gets old, Eddie the shredder, god bless EVH

That was filmed in New Haven, Ct for their "LIve without a Net" DVD. You should hear the studio version of Eruption and you'll be able to pick out the parts of it that he infused throughout this...... So cool ......

This was Eddie at his best. With a guitar and a quirky smile and nothing else but his incredible genius with his guitar. He is playing his professional recreated "Frankenstat" that he originally made in the 70's before he became famous with his band with his brother Alex who is playing drums. Eddie is by many people the greatest guitarist that has ever lived. He rewrote how to play the guitar and they had to come up with a completely different way to write music t to describe what and how he was. doing when he was playing his guitar!! The one and only GUITAR GOD!!! KING EDWARD VAN HALEN!!!

I discovered Eddie Van Halen when I was in high school, around the year 2000. Since day one, he became a huge influence on my playing, especially when I write my own music. When I heard he had passed away a few years ago, it was like hearing Superman had died. Cheers to Eddie and the amazing music he created.
