He actually didn't use an effects pedal for the cello sound. He had a technique where he manipulated the volume up and down rapidly, that he did to create that sound. He was a genius. RIP.

This was from “5150- Live Without A Net”. The year was 1986. Eddie passed away from cancer but left us with hours and hours of some of the best guitar work ever recorded. Glad you got to experience some of his guitar excellence! 😎 For those of us who heard him for the first time in 1978 on Van Halen’s first album… we’re still in awe! 🎸🎸🎸🎸 Rest in Peace Eddie and thank you!

I grew up in the 70's when Van Halen hit the scene. There were guitar heroes like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck and Page but they were all from a previous generation and we always heard stories about all the things we missed with those guys...When Eddie Van Halen arrived, he became an instant legend not only because of his immense talent and then unique style. But also because he was from our generation. To kids of the 70's who were really into music, it was like Eddie was ours and we finally had our own guitar hero.

The chello effect is called a volume swell. The pick hand controls the volume, turning up the volume after the pick strike so you don't hear the pick strike making the guitar sound orchestral. 🤘🇨🇦🤘

To answer you question, Aileen, this "Eruption" solo basically combined bits from the "Eruption" solo from the first VH album; "Spanish Fly" from the second album; the intro to "Mean Street" from the "Fair Warning" (4th) album, and the guitar instrumental "Cathedral" from the 5th VH album "Diver Down." Ed would combine solo pieces the audience recognized with worked out bits he hadn't recorded mixed together with improvisation, all flowing together as one longer solo spot. And changed a bit from show to show. A combination of worked out stuff with in-the-moment inspiration.

I’m 54 and I still to this day have tears well up in my eyes and the hair stand up on my arms whenever I hear EVH play the guitar, and that goes for Dimebag Darrell as well, they were pure musical geniuses, and it makes me soooooo sad knowing that I’ll never get to hear them come up with anything new and creative ever again, nobody compares to either of them. I was lucky enough to see the very last Van Halen concert at the Rose Bowl, and I’ll cherish that memory for the rest of my existence on this planet. RIP Eddie and Darrell, I hope they are somewhere collaborating something right now as I type this.

I had the Great fortune to see these guys Live 16 times and Eddie was Amazing every time...That effect you were asking about where it sounds like a cello is an Eventide H3000 Harmonizer and he twisting the volume control with his right hand to make volume swells...And as far as him being cool and his stage prescence, he was the Greatest with that smoke stuck behind the low E string to that smile...man that smile,it's like he knew the secret to everything but wasnt quite ready to share it with the rest of us mere mortals...The day he died I sat and cried my eyes out...There will NEVER be another like him...

Eddie was the total package. Technical, speed, melodic, unique phrasing, creative, impeccable rhythm playing, the tone. From classical inspired pieces to punch in the gut rock, blues and many points in between, and an energy and incredible stage presence. He changed the game from the way guitar was played, to the way they were built. Total innovator.

I’ve seen reactions and the people are like “it’s going to take a lot of practice if you want to play like that”. I on the other hand feel that people like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, and Jimi Hendrix are far beyond what someone can achieve with lots of practice. These people are born with some special gift that transcends practice. What these men have accomplished is simply magical!

Funny part is, Ed's said in interviews he was so drunk playing this he didn't remember doing it. He'd been very nervous as this was filmed at the first show of the first tour with Sammy and didn't know how the show would go. So he drank himself into not being so nervous, but doesn't remember playing this entire thing. lol

Eddie was as human as you could get, part of his stage courage was assisted by alcohol, deep down he was scared sh'tless always afraid he would make a mistake, later in life he was able to dry out and come to terms with himself. At 65 seems too young for all of us, but I feel God wanted him back.

Eddie was born in Europe but grew up in the U.S. from 6 years old, so I'd say he is more influenced by American rock with obvious influence from classical European orchestra (to which he learned in the U.S. - California) nonetheless. He was a heavy mix of both sides. 😁

This man was not just an exceptional musician and composer, but also an innovator and creator. He built his own guitars, created things that received patents and basically invented an entire sound (called brown sound) that is definitively VH. When you hear that guitar, you just know who it is. He may have had good and bad times like anyone else, but he was also pretty much known as a nice guy. Almost always with that sweet smile on his face. Legendary in every way and the band are badass in general. You will love Van Halen. Check out the original audio of the actual song Eruption. It's only 2 minutes long and it will melt your face off. Then the official video of Hot For Teacher to appreciate the band as a whole. They had the greatest sense of humor. Goofiness combined with the utmost musicianship.

Very few people ever master anything to the degree to which Eddie mastered the guitar. His playing was so innovative, his techniques so advanced that he forever altered how the guitar is played and perceived in public consciousness. A text book Virtuoso. And a Musician (capital M) to his core. His father was a musician. Music was his lifelong love. He had no backup plan, no other ambition, his entire life all he wanted was to play music.... and he did. His only non music related job was a paper route when he was 12... A job he took to pay for a drum kit. Musician. Capital M. Edward Van Halen is the reason I play guitar. He gifted me with a lifelong love of the instrument and an endless wellspring of inspiration as a player. I was lucky enough to meet him once and express what he meant to me. You know that old saying never meet your heroes? Whomever said that needed to choose a better hero.

EVH is the GOAT. I always say “if he’s not your favorite, your favorite guitar player’s favorite guitar player is Eddie Van Halen” What you saw was an amalgamation of different mini solos that he had played and put on albums that came out before this was recorded. His brother Alex is the drummer, and is IMO the most underrated drummer ever, only due to being in a band with a legend like his little brother. There is a video of the drum solo that Alex played at this same concert.

You don't hear the abrupt onset of the note, like a finger or a pick would create, because he just times the pluck with a quick finger twist to drop the volume. So you just hear the sound appear, like a bow. I always wondered what music, and sound in general, were like in his head.

I was actually at this concert. New Haven Conn. Around 1985. The most memorable thing was Sammy Hagar, nearly falling from the catwalk above the crowd. He went up there to sing, and he grabbed a bar over his head and started swinging on it. But his feet hit the bar below him on the last swing, and he nearly fell off.

Ok Edward is as creative a human guitarist as you can attain. And no one will ever give u more perfect musical notes per second. If u really want to see a creative sound and use of guitar, u gotta do Poundcake. Live MTV music awards. You will crap when u see how he introduces the song. Plus u will get Sammy Hagars vocals. It's an amazing combination and an eargasm. This solo is actually pieces of 8 different album songs, with some freestyle in it. He performed this nightly

Pretty unbelievable right Aileen? I'd like a crumb of his talent too; this song is still requested a lot (I DJ most weekends at various places) and every time I hear it I'm still beyond amazed. Another guitar song I think you'd enjoy and marvel at is "Teeth of the Hydra" by Steve Vai...I can't decide between that one and this as my first place guitar song so I took the easy way out and put them both in first place! Eddie created a sound that was labeled 'Neo-classical Rock'. You can hear some of his riffs go into that style; and it sounds like a duo or trio are playing at once. His hand speed, dexterity, and constant hands-on practice and experimentation from waking till sleep, every moment to spare for many years, have him at the top, imho. I grew up in the 60's/70's and heard them all from Hendrix to Steve Vai to Stevie Ray, etc. when they first hit the scene. Steve Vai was a vocal fan of Eddie; saying he was a big inspiration and crediting him with taking rock guitar forward to new places and sounds not heard before. Hendrix used the finger tap, then Eddie took it so much further. Guitarists of serious note will still today say there was guitar before Eddie, then the new era after Eddie. His guitars were so unique in their pickups and internals, and he reworked/rewired amps to help gather and disperse his sound, he just did it all. This particular solo is the most epic of all and I am so glad it survived. RIP Eddie, my man; and God Bless that you stayed the ever-smiling and humble man you always were; through all the fame and craziness.

The part where it sounds like a cello is produced by rolling off the string attack with the volume pot. (You can see him do it if you know to look for it). He popularised a lot of these techniques largely because he couldn’t afford a lot of effect pedals when he was younger. But for me, what set him apart from other guitar heroes of his generation was his stunning musicality: His pocket was insane, and every phrase, every note had musical intent. It was never about fireworks for the sake of fireworks, like with so many of his peers. (Can’t believe I’m talking about him in the past tense - I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it).

Eruption started out as a warm up exercise before gigs at small clubs. While recording their debut album,they only recorded this solo in one take.Eddie never payed it the same way. From 1978-2015

There's a lot to unravel, so here goes... The whole guitar solo was comprised of chunks scattered through VH's recording lifetime. The opening sequence, before the drums kicked in for the first time, that's something called "316" and Eddie used to play it to his son to send him off to sleep. Fun fact (#1?) - "316" is the birthday of his son, "Wolfgang". Fun fact #2 - "Wolfgang" is also a guitarist, although a bassist, and has his own band called "Mammoth". Fun fact #3 - One of Eddies first bands was called "Mammoth". "Wolfgang" chose that as the name for his band as part tribute and part in honour of his dads band. Eddie always had a smile on his face when playing the guitar, contrary to a few other "guitar heros" of the time. The bit that sounded like a cello is called "Cathederal", and can be found on their 4th album "Diver Down". The finger-tapping from 7:37 to 8:17 is from "Eruption". Yes the whole of the solo was just one guitar, his guitar tech has mentioned how few effects his sound uses so as to maintain the clarity. But during the song ("I can't drive") after the solo, he snapped a string and changed to his Steinberger headless very seamlessly (a bonus of having two talented guitarists in one band, Eddie swapped guitars during the guitar break when Sammy Hagar took the lead). During his guitar solos, Eddies energy and charisma was given full reign. But whilst "Van Halen" were together with their first frontman, "Dave Lee Roth", there was an uneasy truce when the two were on stage at once, as DLR needed to be the centre of attention. Things came to a head after the 1984 album was released though, as DLR was off producing his own solo albums, and so the not-as-flamboyant "Sammy Hagar" joined the group. Also at this point the feelings and meanings of the songs produced changed. The DLR era was for all party, fun and energtic songs, whereas the Hagar era was a more laid-back and down to earth feeling. There was a third frontman, Gary Cherone, but he/VH only lasted one album, and it's quite a forgettable one as well. Eddie ate/slept/breathed guitars. He made his own from bits of others. Eddies innovation also saw him using a powerdrill during one of VH's later tracks. His live solos though, for the speed he could hit those notes, he rarely missed or even hit a wrong note. Quite a bit of history there... laid out in no logical order. And as usual, a good reaction from yourself to the video.

When i saw this video for the first time in 1986, i had seen most every video, hendrix, cream, etc......but i was so blown away at 14, that i didnt play drums for a week and just wondered how someone could play so much, so effortlessly, and i didnt hear a bad note, or see any stress in his entire being. The first time I ever saw Van Halen was on their 1988 Monsters of Rock tour at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane Washington. I was 24 at the time and it was my first major rock concert. They came back to Spokane several years later and I went to that concert as well. Eddie is a guitar 🎸 legend and he was a true innovator.

I used to own that entire concert on VHS. It was called LIVE Without A Net. There is also a drum solo and a bass solo. I wish I could say I was there, but I had many a friend come over to watch, or borrow, that VHS tape. Back in 1987 or so I believe, and I manually transferred the entire audio to a cassette tape too.

I got to see VH in 1980 at the First Ever "Rocklahoma" and was one of the best outdoor concerts I've ever gone to!! When David Lee Roth Picked up one of the Joints thrown up on the stage (there had to be a hundred thrown up there!!) and said "What's This??" and proceeded to Light It UP!! LoL!! This was on VH's "Women and Children First" Tour...."Have you seen Junior's Grades!?!" (If you were there, you know!!) LoL!! And we also got to watch Sammy Hagar, Pat Benatar (and she sang her new hit "Hell is for Children") and the closers, The Doobie Brothers (waited about an hour for them but left after the second song - IT WAS HOT)...But That was a Concert!! Those were the Days!!

This is a collection of riffs and solos from various VH songs (including 316 which was released 4 years later on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge). The man was a genius. Most guitar players played the fret board, strings and pickups. Eddie played the GUITAR…the WHOLE DAMN GUITAR! Fret, pickups, front of the body, back of the body, knobs and even used a cordless drill once (check out Poundcake, the first release off of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge). Cheers!

hello from germany! 🙂 maybe my english not so good, so sorry for that! 😊 i was so happy to see, that you have done a reaction video to my favourite band "van halen" and to this awesome guitar solo from eddie. i loved your reaction to this! ... to answer some questions from you :D... the gentleman in the beginning was sammy hagar, the singer of the band "van halen", actually the second singer, after david lee roth. the other two band members drums-alex van halen (eddies brother), bass - michael anthony. the eruption guitar solo includes parts of van halen songs , and instrumental songs or intros. for example the part, when the guitar sounds like a cello is called "cathedral" and is fom the van halen album "diver down" . iám such a big vh-fan since 1986, and i saw them live two times, and it blows me away. i´am still so sad, that eddie passed away nearly 3 years ago. i hope you wil do some more reactions to vh-songs... looking forward to this :) .... marc

Yes, you're the first reactor I've seen that commented on the sound of a classical orchestra/instruments at a certain point in his solo. Eddie was trained in classical piano since he was young, his middle name is the Dutch version of Ludwig, as in Ludwig Von Beethoven, and he named his son Wolfgang after Mozart...classical music was very impt to him. He's also done other pieces of music based on classical compositions. So while many rockers are blues based, Eddie often came from a classical point of view (yes, he could do blues based guitar all day long, too). He had a grand piano at home and many people who had been in his home said that he was just riveting to watch play incredible piano.

I saw Van Halen open for The Doobie Brothers in the mid 70s. I had heard of them but didn't know much about them. I saw people in my high school wearing Van Halen tshirts etc. Needless to say I was blown away!

I had this concert on VHS about 20 years ago and I’m pretty sure I wore out this specific portion to death. If there is someone who embodied Mozart in the 20th century, it was EVH. He ignited my passion and love of playing guitar in my teens. As you said in the video, portions of his playing sound like a lullaby. This is ironic considering that the very start of his solo is called “3:16”. It actually became an ode to his son, Wolfgang Van Halen and was on the FUCK album. When his wife was pregnant with their son, Eddie would play that song and it became Wolfie’s. When Eddie died of cancer almost three years ago, I legit, honest to god, cried my eyes out. As if that year wasn’t fucking awful already but to have him die in the same year was the ultimate kick to the balls. Anyways, this was a great reaction and I’m glad you had such a good time with it. I highly recommend doing more EVH and Van Halen videos!! RIP E.V.H
