Such a brilliant comment Syed about the "time machine" analogy. I'm a 70 year old guy, loving the way your are discovering, appreciating and giving your honest opinion about all that you hear.. As you can imagine I was 10 when this album came out so my whole life has been Beatles both together and as solo artists and I KNOW what they did for music and the impact they had on the world and the music business. As you said, it's so difficult for someone like yourself to imagine that phenomenon but I give you all the kudos for having an open mind and recognising the talent that was there from the very beginning even in its basic form. I can't wait for your review of "With the Beatles". Keep on Rocking.

The released version you just heard of Twist and Shout was their *first* take, done LIVE. They attempted a second take, but John's voice was gone by then. It's just amazing to me how tight they were, and how charismatic -- the first true rock band. What legends.
@sourisvoleur4854
@sourisvoleur4854 Жыл бұрын
That tightness (I'm sure I'm not telling you something you don't know) comes from the time they put in in Hamburg and in the Cavern. As Syed said earlier, they were tight because of all the time they spent on stage together. They could walk into the studio and just play the song like breathing.

This album was recorded on a two track recording machine and was mixed for both mono and stereo releases. It’s more like a recording of their stage performance than a real studio album. Given that and the fact they recorded 10 of the songs in one session, the sound quality and musicianship is a harbinger for the brilliance of their future recordings.

There's A Place is, for me, one of the first signs of their unique abilities, distinct from all the other groups which were legion at the time. It was simple but urgent, something profound about that first verse (as you said) even though it was a love song. The slight dissonances in the harmonies, the way Lennon & McCartney's voices blended, still gives me a real frisson, even after all these years. The bridge is just wonderful. All their albums contained at least one track that pointed to something evolving, something more would be happening with their music. I'll Be Back on a Hard Day's Night &, especially, Hey You've Got To Hide Your Love Away from Help! were standouts for me. They really were unique.

There is a little Easter egg at the end of twist and shout John's voice was done at this point. He was drinking milk to try and cool his throat. The lads knew they only had one shot at capturing what was an iconic live song. They were shirtless,sweating and hypinf themselves up John rides his voice right to the edge of break up, you can hear him pushing it right to the edge The band are amazing and they know they capture the sound of Beatlemania. They know they nail it. And as the last symbols crash you can hear McCartney shout 'YEAH!!' in the recording. A wonderful document of an amazing live band

Nice to finish this with the last song on the album. You can hear John's voice is just about to fail. For their Royal Command concert they did this song. It was semi scandalous as they were the first rockers to do that. Just before this song John spoke to the royal audience "For our last number, I'd like to ask your help," Lennon says, as he licks his lips. "The people in the cheaper seats, clap your hands. And the rest of you, if you'd just rattle your jewelry." LOL

Love 'em both. Having pretended to play guitar on a toy earthmover or other substitute since likely before age 3 in front of our house in Crawley, Sussex, still, it was John's delivery of 'Twist and Shout' on Ready Steady Go in the autumn, iirc, of '63 that made me think, "that's what I want to do," at age 7. Leading kids' ensembles late 90s-early 00s, and wrapping up 'Twist and Shout', a young girl looked at me and asked, "How do you DO that?!" Her friend answered sagely, pre-empting my own searching tentative response, "He yells." Nailed it, sweetheart, thank you. 😊 Great reaction, mate. 👍

Love LOVE LOVING your Beatles reactions, Syed.. All My Loving, in fact... Please continue this amazing journey. You can be sure a legion of us lifelong (and other) Beatles fans will accompany you on this adventure. Good to hear you've been listening to some of the pop music that was around contemporaneously with these early Beatles songs, too, for context. Make sure you listen to Bill Haley and the Comets, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard, as well as pop crooners like Frank Ifield. That was the idiom within which they worked at first, before their own unique idiom began to emerge more noticeably. I think it's interesting that when John and Paul first sat down together to write, having both already tried writing songs on their own as young teenagers, they had the idea that maybe they could become as successful and famous as Rogers and Hart, or Rogers and Hammerstein - other great song-writing duos from the past. As it turned out, they could! But, yes, the aim was simply to write hit songs, memorable songs, songs that people would love and want to dance to, that would make them rich, famous, successful, and popular with girls! With those simple goals in mind, they laid the foundations of their song-writing craft. Eventually hitting unimaginable (even for them) fame and success, their individual and collective life experience as a band became something unique. They met hundreds if not thousands of creative and influential people; they met Dylan. They got turned on to various mind expanding substances and meditation techniques. Along with others in that incredibly fecund period, their minds exploded with the creative possibilities. And it all came out in the diversity of music they created together, inspiring either directly or indirectly virtually all future (non-classical) musicians, for generations to come. As Brian May (from Queen) said, "The Beatles opened the doors, and we all just walked through!"

John Lennon's voice on that is just fantastic. And I believe that's the highest I've ever heard him go, yeah it was a scream but it was mostly belting with just a little bit of falsetto maybe mixed in for that resonance and he gets all the way up to an A5 on that first harmony stack. That is amazing. For reference, C4 is a middle C on the piano, so this would be the A six notes above that and then a whole octave up from that again. Truly impressive. It's funny because I was looking at the lyrics for There's A Place before you started the music playing, and I was actually thinking, I know I know this but I cannot remember and the lyrics for once aren't triggering anything. But from about the third note it all popped right back into my head instantly. It's amazing how much that stuff got so deeply into my head when I was exploring the early Beatles catalog in junior high in the mid-1970s. And I absolutely love that bridge; it's so well done vocally and melodically.

Basic and raw, 'Twist and shout' gives us a flavour of what they must have sounded like on those long arduous sets in the nightclubs of Hamburg, prompted by drunken brawling German sailors demanding the band put on a real show for them. The song is still a thrilling sound after all these years.

I remember reading or hearing something about the lyrics of There's A Place, that they reflected the tragedies that had plagued John throughout his life. By 1963, John had lost his mother, his Uncle George (who had helped raise him), his best friend Stu Sutcliffe, and he'd been abandoned by his father. So he already had a list of sucker punches to his life. Later on, he would lose Brian Epstein, Brian Jones (who he was friends with), his band and first marriage would break up, he'd have sporadic contact with his eldest son (partly his own fault, of course) and he'd be murdered at 40. There was a lot of bad luck in his life, and the place he would seek to go (first his mind, then drugs, then meditation and I guess eventually Yoko) gave him some sort of comfort.

"Twist and Shout" was written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns (Russell), recorded by the Top Notes and produced by Phil Spector (1961). Berns thought Spector had made a pig's ear of it so took his song changed it somewhat and recorded it with The Isley Brothers (1962) kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHewaaebab2korM . The Beatles version was a cover of The Isleys (1963). It's a straight copy, really, pared down to fit a four piece band i.e. no brass section. The Beatles version works because the vocals of the lads are spot on and it carries the same excitement as The Isleys' version. It's best seen live. My favourite is the Royal Command Performance 1963 kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6Kvn6dnbp2hi6s I still prefer The Isleys (but I'm a Bert Berns fan 🤩)

George had his day in years to come and Ringo is still touted as being one of the best drummers ever. (try keeping the beat going when the screaming out-volumed the bands music on stage). It's great that you're doing the Beatles chronologically. Please also note that they also had quite a few singles, A and B sides that did not appear on albums until compilations came along. Just to keep the chronology of their development in order, please slot them in in the appropriate places. Cheers ✌

I think this, and other songs were based on their lives as the superstar Rock and Roll idols they ad become, and this song, expresses some desire to escape the non-stop madness they were going through. No more privacy, everyone wants a piece of you, or your clothing, or hair etc. It's sort of a "Leave me alone for a while" song. Remember, they changed the world, and more were coming soon after them. Everything changed when The Beatles came on the scene.

They were very influenced by Buddy Holly and the Crickets in fact they named their band The Beatles Because they want to be named after an insect like Buddy Holly and the Crickets when his plane went down that was The Day the Music Died made popular in the song American Pie by Don McLean it would take you forever to dissect American Pie apart there's so many hidden meanings in the lyrics

I'd give him at least six more months before listening to American Pie or Murder Most Foul... he'd have learned more American references by then. Murder Most Foul is an amazing piece of writing...the way JFKs shooting is interwoven between all the "Americanisms"

Wow! Is this true mono? The vocals are completely on my right. Ringo completely on my left. It sounds great. But cheap. It remind me if you go to a friends garage and watch them rehearse. But he had friends who could naturally harmonize. It really sounds, fundamental. It makes me want you to react to Debaser by the Pixies of all things. This was fun! I like this format you have for this one.

I've had numerous people tell me that The Beatles don't rock. This is the greatest rock vocal performance ever. I don't know what those people are talking about. I'm not sure i want to know what they think rocks if this doesn't qualify.

George Martin went to his grave believing that "Twist And Shout" was the single greatest track ever laid down on a piece of vinyl and who could argue that point. Around 11pm Johns voice was shredded and they knew he only had one take left in him and like he said I just screamed into the mic and we hear the results. Legendary performance by the whole band, these four were so tight. The story goes that yes, John had a cold and before they laid the track down, he sipped on a hot cup of tea, sucked on a cough drop and then let it rip and the rest is music history or lore or whatever you want to call it. I prefer the word magical. Actually they recorded ten of the fourteen tracks that day. "Love Me Do"/ P.S. I Love You" went out as their first single in October, 1962 and "Please Please Me"/Ask Me Why" were released as a single in January, 1963. Either way, ten tracks in one day is remarkable and has never been repeated by anyone since then. We should be thankful that The Beatles ended up as EMI artists which was the best recording studios in the world at that time and ended up with George Martin. These early recordings were laid down on two track stereo, that's all that was available at the time, yet sound so clean. Everything about the band from how John and Paul met at such a young age and then brought in Paul's 14 year old school pal, George Harrison and finally Ringo in 1962 to where they ended up recording and their manager and just their crazy talent in their short career as a band seems almost like this stuff was ordained by the universe or something. Magical or whatever you want to call it. I'd be willing to bet that this stuff is never happening again in music. Ain't gonna happen! Peace ❤

You should do From Me To You and Thank You Girl next, the two songs on the single that came out after the Please Please Me album, and then after that She Loves You (SMASH HITH) and it's B-side I'll Get You. All four songs were released inbetween the first two Beatles albums but NOT included in With The Beatles, their second LP

There's a Place is a much better tune than people think. A folk singer, Gabrielle Aplin, only 20 then, slowed it down and made it beautiful ballad when recording live for the 50 the Anniversary celebration of Please Please Me in 2013. It's all in how you approach the song. the thing to do in 1963 was to make it a fast song for the teen market with the faster heartbeats of wacky hormone city teendom.

That opening harmonica riff transports me back to grade school!! Not a big hit-number 74 for one week. This was a time when all the record labels that have license to their music released all of their music at the same time to cash in on Beatlemania-not only Capitol but Vee Jay, Tollie, MGM, Atco,Swan, Polydor and Decca. Twist & shout made it to number 2-would have been number one but Can't Buy Me Love rocketed to #1 instead after I Want To Hold Your Hand and she Loves You.

Their synthesis of Berry, Richard, Everleys, Holly & Crickets, male and female African american harmony groups was the new thing, as demonstrated here. The African Americans hailed them as the real deal because they went full out like Gospel and Soul instead of being pretty white boys sugar-coating the roots music for US high schools as fronts for session musicians

Indeed it was the times, but Lennon's vocals are timeless on this track. Pretty much sounding like nothing else that was on the radio at the time. Keep an ear on the development/changes/timeline from LP to LP and remember it was all in less than 8 years of recording. I have the feeling that you will find yourself at a party some night and you will slip this into the mix - and that a lot of people will flow right into it.
