@@billythedog-309recording albums is almost always a lengthy endeavor. It can take weeks, months, even years. Practicing every song and making sure the performances are tight and everything used to record is properly placed is time-consuming and requires patience. So recording an entire album in less than one day and have the performances be great, not to mention the fact that this was recorded during a time when there were no computers or digital technology, having to record it all on analogue tape, where editing anything was damn near impossible, is pretty insane.

That's John singing on Anna. And Chains is actually a cover of a black quartet as you suspected. There's a lot of covers in these first albums. Actually Anna is a cover of Arthur Alexander. Half of the tracks here are covers. First George composition is on the next album. And I don't know if you are aware of this fact, but this was recorded live (live in the studio)in one day session, then George Martin came back other day and added the little Misery piano and a little celesta on Baby its you and that was it.

Just for info, John sang on “Anna Go to Him” and George sang “Chains”. You were right, though, about the early Beatles sounding a bit like a black R&B group in their early days. They were very influenced by the music of the 1950s, including rock ‘n roll and Tamla Motown, though delivered with their own unique style right from the beginning 👍

Anna is actually a cover and it was sung by John. John had a cold during the recording so his voice sounds a bit unusual. Their early albums included more covers as it was common back then. Baby it’s you is also sung by John and also a cover :D

This album was recorded in 1962-1963, so it reflects the late 50's & early 60's vibes. "Anna" was sung by John with backup vocals from George. "Chains" was sung by George. John sang the main part of "Baby It's You", the "Sha La Lal" part was sung by George. "Do You Want to Know a Secret" is sung by George and written by John. "There's a Place" is sung by John with backing from Paul. Songs were generally 2 1/2 to 3 minutes back then because radio would not play anything more than 3 minutes. They do all genres of music; you can't stick them to just one thing. The Beatles grew leaps and bounds from this album to their last album, all done in 7 1/2 years.

i’ve been a beatles fan my whole life and this reaction made me appreciate this album way way more! a few things: the fellas writing so many relatively simple love songs at this time was a marketing tactic. singing so many songs addressed directly to their audience played a HUUUUGE role in their popularity early on bc their fans felt like they were being serenaded by these four charming good looking guys. i saw her standing there is mind blowing when you study the bass line and realize paul is playing it AND SINGING LEAD at the same time. same with ringo playing drums on boys. highly recommend watching the live performance of ISHST that they do at their 1964 washington dc show, ringo goes ballistic on the drums and it’s incredible. these reactions have been so fun to watch!! i’m 26 and seeing someone close to me in age listen to a lot of the beatles for the first time reaffirms my belief that my all time favorite band transcends all eras. can’t wait for the rest of the discography! much love

Your reaction to the line : 'She was just seventeen / if you know what I mean' .... well, that probably means something different to everyone. I know what it means to me, by golly. When John and Paul were writing it, Paul had the line 'she'd never been a beauty queen'. John said no and it was replaced. 'Anna (Go To Him)' was John. He had a cold. Written by Arthur Alexander. 'Chains' was George. Written by Goffin/King. 'Please Please Me' was a song John brought in. It was suggested by producer George Martin to speed it up. 'Baby It's You' is John. Written by Burt Bacharach and others, I believe. A Taste Of Honey' was not written by the band. Only eight of the tracks were written by the band. It was obligatory to do cover tracks then so people were familiar with the songs and more apt to buy it. They are older tracks. Basically this album is their stage act. It would only be about a year before they were writing entire albums. What is fascinating is that as busy as they were touring they still managed to put out well-written album after album year after year.

For these earlier albums it's a good thing to note that many of the songs are covers, given that a lot of artists did that at the time. Lots of pop songs were written by industry songwriters to be performed by anyone, or artists just took other somewhat popular or lesser known tracks to use on their albums either for exposure or just because they like the song. If you look at the track list on Wikipedia or Genius, you'll see that Anna, Chains, Boys, Baby It's You, Taste of Honey, and Twist and Shout are all cover songs. This is another reason why some tracks have more of an old school 50's R&B type feel than others, because that's what they were lol.

Darius, glad to hear you're feeling better. Great idea to listen to the Beatles chronologically (aside from the couple later albums you already did). They were great at every stage and evolved so quickly, it's amazing to see it unfold. One thing astounding about their growth is how the 3 writers evolved together and kept up with each other. None of them got stuck in early Sixties mode, which could have easily happened with lesser talents. Simply amazing!

Emperor Darius, a powerful greeting from Australia. I was extremely sceptical at first as it is very difficult to run one past me at any given time. I looked and looked, but after seven of your videos , I was completely floored. You are the only one that has ever picked up on the fact that the song, There's a Place, is an empirical song on that album. There isn't a band on earth today that could do it justice. It is just too difficult. You are nothing short of a genius, an like I say, it is very hard for someone like me to be fooled. We need people like you to set the RECORD straight. Love your work.

For a long time their manager, Brian Epstein, had been desperately touting a demo around every record company in London with zero success. It was only the producer George Martin, at the EMI studios, who saw some raw potential and finally gave them a break, and even he was more struck by their engaging personalities than their music at that point. It was very unusual for any band to write all it's own music in this era, and it was standard to cover Rock'n'Roll and R & B numbers learnt and imitated off American imports, the fact The Beatles wrote so many of their own songs was pretty unique. This album was essentially a selection straight from the sets they had performed live over the previous 3 years of club gigs. A mixture of covers and as many originals as they, and George Martin, thought had a enough quality. 6 of the 14 songs were covers: 'Anna', 'Chains', 'Boys', 'Baby it's you', 'A taste of honey' and 'Twist and shout'. They had one day for the whole album, and they rehearsed through their lunch break, recording started at 10am and finished at 10:30pm when they got to listen back to the full session. Everything had been recorded as live studio performances onto just 2 tracks. John was suffering a bad cold for the whole session, and after finishing with his lead vocal for 'Twist and shout' his throat was totally wrecked.

The whole thing about them was that they took "black" music that wasn't allowed on "white" radio in the 50's and early 60's, Fats Domino, Little Richard, (who's keyboard player Bill Preston kinda' joined the band later,) Chuck Berry etc. got some cute hair cuts, manager put them in suits (they wore leather before they got signed) and re-sold it to white America. Ha! (Cultural Appropration was fire back then. LOL). Then of course they twisted it up into their own thing later.

We didn't have "black" and "white" radio in the UK, music wasn't segregated that way here

something important to remember! as far as i’m aware, the fourth track on all or most beatle records are george’s songs! chains is also a cover so don’t worry about that being george’s song lol, it’s not. his first song is the fourth song on their next record “with the beatles”! anna (go to him) is john’s song :) great video, cannot wait to watch the rest of the album reactions! (cool banner in the back btw, i live right next to the u of m!)

The Beatles basically recorded parts of their stage program at the time on a single day of recording. It includes 8 originals and 6 covers. The work is now 61 years old. It wins, when one compare it to the stuff else, that was released during that time period. This freshness and joy of playing is rarely found on these albums at a time, when an album was not yet the norm and was usually just a compilation of previous singles and a few fillers. Someone probably already wrote it, but the "Anna" cover is sung by Lennon. Harrison sings "Chains" and "Do you to know a secret"....

Most of the Please Please Me songs were actually recorded live, their debut album is basically a bunch of singles in an album. bang on reaction though, it's always a blast seeing your honest reactions

Great reaction. It's up to your usual thoughtful, discerning standard. Keep it up! I love that you're exploring the evolution of the Beatles' discography. Their early stuff was all about love, it was their take on the conventional love songs that dominated the pop scene at the time. And while romantic love continued to occupy their lyrics for the next few albums, with each passing one, you can clearly see how quickly they were maturing musically and lyrically. When you check out their next album, released in the U.S., "Meet the Beatles", you'll see what I mean. I'll be joining you on this Bealtes retrospective for sure!

I particularly like how they developed the concept of love in their songs from this romantic teen ideal to a universal cosmic force - I think love was their central message (no matter their failings as individual humans) - a welcome antidote to the hate pumped out by politicians earlier in the twentieth century

A lot of these songs are remakes: Anna (That's John's lead vocal), Chains, Boys, Baby It's You (John's Lead vocal there too), A Taste of Honey, and Twist & Shout. When they were playing in Liverpool and Hamburg, they mostly played covers. Keep in mind, this was their FIRST studio album.

The individual Beatles tracks are more of a later album thing (starts around Rubber Soul / Revolver) in most of the early songs John and Paul used to sing together.
