Pink Floyd always created soundscapes - places to visit and marvel at, full of meticulously composed music and lyrics, with hundreds of subtle (and often experimental) uses of new tech (ie, more than 16 tracks available to record with, synthesisers, loops and stereo panning). So nice to see that the new, fresh sounds I heard back in the 70's when this album came out are still working their magic on another generation. Or at least on you, who clearly appreciate what you're hearing.'Pigs on the wing' is a great acoustic piece to learn - and I'm sure we'd all love seeing you play it! PS Love that last sound on 'Dogs' - like a power station closing down. Which is what the building on the cover photo was - Battersea power station, London, UK.

Animals is an album that requires paying close attention to the lyrics. The dystopyian nightmare. Probably their most lyrically sophisticated album. Or maybe The Wall. It's also the album where they (Roger Waters) started sounding really angry. Animals is their Heavy Metal album. The dog barking sound effect was made by playing a keyboard through a vocoder. Animals also has David's Gilmour's best guitar playing. He plays multiple EPIC solos all over this album. A++

Peart has said before that he likes Mason as a player and I think he is a good drummer. He might be as good as Peart or Bonham, but he doesn’t really get to show it on that kind of level in Floyd. Your claims might be true, but you wouldn’t know it by listening to Floyd. It’s Gilmour who gets to really shine whereas in Rush and Zeppelin all of their members get to show off their chops on almost every song, especially true with Rush.

Bought this as soon as it came out in the UK. A reflection of where the country was at this time. They flew the pig over Battersea power station in London but it escaped! In the end they had to shoot it down as it was a potential threat to aircraft landing at Gatwick and Heathrow airports. Pigs did appear at other times for example when I saw Floyd live at the old Wembley Stadium in London. It flew the length of the stadium that evening. Great times and memories. Fantastic that you appreciate the music I have been listening to all my life.

The production is so clever on this album. I especially like how they take you all over this spectrum that goes from animal noise to purely abstract synthesizer sound. Sometimes on "Dogs" you hear barking, and other times you hear this note which you can barely tell is a distorted dog bark. They use the actual sound and a synthesized mpression of that sound and go back and forth. They also create the impression of a sheep's "baahhh" on "Sheep," with Waters's voice. In typical Floyd fashion, they explore an idea so fully and from so many different angles without ever being boring.

Outstanding reaction (and thanks for doing the entire side1). When you get to side 2, you'll need to understand the overall concept (a re-imagining of George Orwell's novel "Animal Farm") to portray Roger's version of life in GB during the '70's. Simply put, the dogs represent 'big' business, the pigs are the political factions, and the sheep are the citizens getting screwed over by both. You can draw your own conclusions at the end. Thanks again for the analysis of a sonic masterpiece - absorbing the lyrics will take a little more time. (but ultimately well worth it). Sit back and enjoy - every PF album is a journey somewhere.

I really love that you're listening to these entire albums, the way they were meant to be experienced. Also liking the fact that you're going through them in chronological order, from Dark Side of the Moon, so far. You should keep that up, then maybe work your way backward afterwards to see where and how they developed their sound. After Animals, The Wall. You may need to split that up into four parts as it's a double album. Please don't skip The Final Cut, it's fantastic and there aren't nearly enough reaction videos for it. I, and some others, tend to think of The Final Cut as a Waters album that's backed by Pink Floyd. I also tend to think of Momentary Lapse of Reason as a Gilmour album, before a return to a more of a full band effort put in with The Division Bell. Anyway, love what you're doing here. Keep up the good work. I love to see younger generations discover the music I grew up with. Looking forward to more.

This is one of my favourite PF albums, it is so meaningful and so reflective of our world. Timeless, the desire for power, the use of the dogs as enforcers. The fact that the dogs are expendable tools only occurs to them ( the dogs) when they get old and are no longer of use that the song hits home. It is spiritual on many dimensions. The dogs are ‘used’, the sheep are abused and the pigs don’t care.

Brian Humphries engineered Animals so the separation of channels (left & right on headphones) that you like has a lot to due with him. Just like Alan Parsons engineered Dark Side of the Moon. Engineers are pretty important in regards to recording. Geoff Emerick engineered almost all of the Beatles output and Alan Parsons showed up on Abbey Road. These guys are important to the sound of albums. You don't get that any more.

I think Mason is underrated. He’s definitely the right drummer for Floyd, embellishing and creating the perfect supporting structure for the soundscapes that make this band so great. All the members in Floyd are master textural players, with Gilmour being the one member who could be considered a virtuoso. I don't think Mason has the technical chops of someone like Bonham or Peart, but I don't love him any less, in fact I like him more overall than Peart. Mason is like RIngo Starr. He plays what needs to be played, and it's perfect for the song.

What makes Nick Mason so good is his groove/swing. I would argue his feel and groove is as good as Bill Ward and better than Bonham or Peart. Bonham and Pert were both more technical and power drummers, but neither could play as funky-in-the-pocket as Nick Mason or Bill Ward do (Echoes is maybe the best example, but he really just does it every time). Part of the reason I prefer Sabbath and Floyd to Rush or Zep.

Growing up in the 60s my conception of the 70s was that of a great dropoff, musically. When disco hit I retreated into discovering classical music, with a few excursions into Zappa, Kraftwerk, and the Greateful Dead. I only really discovered the incredible work Pink Floyd was doing during this era much later, and the fact that their output still sounds timeless is a testament to its worth. It's gratifying seeing a member of a younger generation making the exact same discoveries. Animals is one of their tidiest and most insightful works.

At the end of this last encore, while roadies get the equipment out, Nick Mason was HILARIOUS, since at the end, he basically had nothing else but his seat and one of his drums. This concert still holds today the attendance record at the Olympic Stadium, with more than 80,000 spectators.

In fact, it wasn't the first rock concert at the Olympic Stadium following the 1976 games. Emerson, Lake & Palmer recorded their video (Fanfare For The Common Man) there in February 1977. In the middle of winter by -20 celsius and 18 inches of snow on the ground. However, there were no spectators in the stadium.

The whistling signals at around 16'20" to 16'50" are a shepherd commanding his sheepdog, which fits nicely with concepts on one of the other tracks ("Sheep") as well.

I just want to recommend using some type of noise limiter or something. There’s an unfortunate high pitch humming sound on your mic through this reaction.

It's electrical interference. As a guitar player, I can tell you we deal with interference all the time. Single coil pickups always pick up a constant hum from the electricity itself. Then we have to watch out for computers, monitors, tv's, phones, vapes, remote controls, fluorescent lights, sun spots, even power tools being used down the street, they all make audible noise through the amp. But then there's also just bad wiring in your house. That'll create all sorts of audible noise too. When I play guitar, I literally have to turn off everything else, and keep the guitar at a 90 degree angle from the amp to minimize noise. If I face the amp, or have my back to it, loads of unwanted noise.

@@rebeccabailey527 yup I play guitar too. Lol. Hence recommending a noise limiter which btw you can get for your guitar too. They have limiter pedals. They’re called noise gates. 👍

Sadly, Animals sort of marks when Pink Floyd ceased to be a cohesive unit and became Roger Waters' backing band. Dogs and Sheep were based on Gotta Be Crazy and Raving and Drooling which they'd been performing at gigs. Waters split his song Pigs on the Wing into two parts to bookend the album and wrote the rather awful Pigs himself which meant Gilmour, Wright and Mason came away from the project with co-writing credits only for Dogs and Sheep. During sessions for The Wall Waters' megalomania reached its zenith, culminating in him sacking Rick Wright. And this was just the start of their problems. At the time though we knew nothing of this and were just thrilled to have another Floyd album. My god, when Sheep hit that riff at the end I thought my head would explode. Then again shortly afterwards New Wave hit hard and I didn't listen to the Floyd again for at least ten years.

Yes, didn't the 8-track cartridge link back to the beginning on continuous loop, so Snowy White recorded a bridging section so both parts of Pigs on the Wing formed a continuous whole? I think that version is on his Goldtop album.

I really like your reactions to PF a lot! One of the best reactors to the band in my humble opinion. To your early point about the drum patterns in "Dogs," many (I and others) have commented on various reactors' PF reaction videos that Nick Mason is pretty underrated as a drummer. He even thinks of himself as just average (or something to that effect); he doesn't think he's bad--just not great. However, Nick Mason's own view of himself notwithstanding, he is much better than many realize. He's about one of the most solid, consistent drummer/percussionists in rock music. I doubt he'll make a list or be featured in a show about the greatest rock drummers, but the space he allows for the music ("Comfortably Numb" is a good example), the just-right fills ("Dogs" is a great example), the balance in drum-solo-like features (the beginning of "Time" is the best example) all show that he is the most appropriate drummer for this combination: David Gilmour and his guitar, Rick Wright and his keyboard/synthesizer, and Roger Waters and his bass. Sure, drummers like Neil Peart, Max Roach, Bill Bruford, Buddy Rich, Carl Palmer, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, etc. (forgive all the name-dropping) will be at the top of most lists, along with others--and rightly so--but Nick Mason has carved out his own place of greatness not for standing out, but for fitting-in the best. Keep up the great format, and I appreciate your work!

I read Nick putting himself down once for not being trained; though he said he had about 2 weeks' training at some point later on, but didn't take to it. When you listen to him talking about tuning his drums, it's clear he's an absolute expert, self-taught or otherwise!
