It is heart warming to see your open mindedness to music you haven't heard before, and seeing you clearly feel it like we did back then. The first half of the seventies was an extraordinary time for music, with bands coming up with new ideas seemingly every week. I'm guessing I was about your age in 1975. I think that period is why my generation remains open to music of many genres, unlike many people who don't seem to want to stray away from what they already know. Thank you, I really enjoyed listening to that again with you.

There's certainly more Floyd to check out, many albums before Dark Side of the Moon, and many after. Before moving forward with 'Animals' I would suggest going back to their live video called Live at Pompeii. It was filmed right before recording DSotM, and serves as a sort of greatest hits of their beginnings, and you get to see the original band including Roger Waters, who was a huge part of Floyd, creatively, lyrically, and vocally. Pompeii was a city in Italy that was buried by metres of volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. It was left undisturbed for centuries, and when it was finally excavated the city and it's residents were preserved in their final moments before death. Floyd plays to an empty and overgrown amphitheatre. If you don't want to see it all, the song Echoes from the video is a classic.

Legend has it that 1 in every 4 homes in England had a physical copy of the Vinyl Album 'Dark Side of the Moon' at one point in history ... It sold enormous quantities, before streaming was a thing. Wish You Were Here was a personal favourite Pink Floyd Album of mine and it brings back so many memories of times and places whenever I hear it ... I still have Vinyl copies of both of those records and a few other Pink Floyd Albums tucked away (together with a decent quality Turntable to play them on !).

At the end of "Have a Cigar" the sound is disappearing into and being sucked into one speaker and then comes out on another channel playing the end of a radio conversation about astronomy then the user changes channel again where he picks up on the opening riff for "Wish You Were Here" which he likes the sound of so sticks on that channel picks up his guitar then copies the opening riff for "Wish You Were" on his accoustic guitar

Talking of Led Zeppelin...now that's a band I hope you'll get round to listening to some time, although there's also a lot more Floyd to go too! It's great to see your appreciation, awe, wonder and joy when you listen to Floyd. I saw this Concert, Shine on is a lament for their original Leader & Producer Syd Barrett. Who named the band as well. He was the original guitarist & song writer of Pink Floyd's first LP. Piper at the Gates of Dawn. He left the band, due to commercialism, his own drug use, & dissatisfaction of what was happening. He hated the industry. Your, reaction is priceless, the lyrics are about Syd...Alot of Synthesizer. from Rick Wright. MEDDLE is another outstanding LP. Very emotional show.
@AD270479
@AD270479 2 жыл бұрын
You clearly know a bit about Floyd, but Syd never left the band because of commercialism, his own drug use, & dissatisfaction of anything. In fact Syd never left the band at all, he was just left out & never even noticed due to his severe mental illness. The band were all heading to the recording studio one day, someone asked 'Should we go & pick up Syd' to which someone responded 'let's not' and that was that. Syd never played with them again. Syd hadn't a clue what was going on with the band for a good while before he was ousted... It's accidentally down to Syd's mental illness that Floyd became known for their very long solos & intros. He would often just go in to a trance while playing and keep repeating the same chords over & over for ages, and to disguise it the band had to play along & kinda copy him, and the crowd loved it, thinking it was intentional, so they continued to play that way after he was gone. There was other times where they wouldn't even plug his mic or amp in at gigs because he got that bad, and Syd was to spaced out to even notice.

I used to feel like Led Zeppelin was overrated because it was played way too much in my era, but for someone that has never heard them, they're top tier. Considering my lingering "it's overplayed" feel towards LZ, I'd recommend Yes, The Moody Blues, Genesis, or some easier flowing King Crimson and then once she's on the Prog train, Rush.

Also, if you don't know, the cover of WYWH represents an artist being "burned" by the music industry. The back cover represents the invisible record executives who profit from the artists creation. There was a post- card insert with a diver making no splash, suggesting the theme of absence. Great symbolism by the graphic designers Hipgnosis. Regards from Illinois 🇺🇸!!! PS: What is your accent? This was the era of concept albums by numerous artists who possessed enormous musical skills ... I first bought the CD in the mid 90's, one of my first Floyd CDs, and all these years later it still holds up, never gets stale, and it has never been dethroned from that top spot. I'd check out their older stuff like More or The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, there was just a different sound to them back then, yet they still had a good diverse sound even early on.

Very happy to see your first reaction to this. I saw them play this live for the first time in 1977. The part at the end of "Have a Cigar" when the sound seems to get sucked into a radio...the band were in full flight playing the song and suddenly all the lights went out, except for one, which was a spotlight pointed at an old radio hanging on a microphone stand. You could hear the band playing through the radio into the microphone. Then the bass player walked up and started retuning the radio through the local radio stations before it went back to the band, playing the beginning of Wish You Were Here. It was very cool. The part at the end of Shine on You Crazy Diamond, when you said "I love that instrument", that was Rick Wright playing a synthesizer. As it went to the final calm piece of music the only lights were on him and on the big movie screen behind him were waves crashing on a beach. It was an amazing magical moment. Watching you listening for the first time brought all those memories flooding back to me. Shine On...

Now before I start the video I predict you will have a very strong emotional reaction to Wish you were here.... that bass on have a cigar makes this tune special. I forget sometimes how special pink floyd is, so seeing a fresh reaction from a new generation is absolutely fantastic...... ha yes a tear in your eye at the end! I saw that.🤣 again classic Moog... also some of the best slide guitar ever. No not a flut but can you guess what it is now?😬 that instrument you love so much, I also love, its you got it a MOOG SYNTHESIZER. And you have not missed out because you are now officially a super fan well done to you. I think I was your age when I first got into Pink Floyd. So you have a long time, believe me to listen to such great bands. People my age think music is dead, but I think we are in a golden age of music discovery. And I avidly listen to some great musicians and bands that your generation has produced. Well done and keep digging for the best music. You deserve a sub and deep respect for not listening to the mainstream. Not everyone even likes great music, and that's ok. But those that dig will always find beauty. The unusual end on Have A Cigar is a fade to an old style mono transistor radio (only in one ear) and is a sound effect to join with Wish You Were Here. I remember listening to a preview (pre-release) of the whole album on BBC Radio 2 (UK) (no breaks or adverts) and we all thought the stereo system had blown one speaker 😂

I am enjoying your reactions because you are truly listening to the music, picking out individual instruments, the way the songs are arranged and produced and not getting hung up simply on lyric's as a lot of other reaction channels do.

You have no idea how much joy it brings me to see how much you are enjoying the music right now! :D I've spend weeks running loops around these songs and eventually you get tired of them for a bit but I always come back to them again :) The feeling is just that good! :D

This was really fun to watch, you obviously have a very visceral reaction to music, and I'm sure if you keep pursuing it you can do something worthwhile in the field as a career.

When they played at Wembley it was so hot and they arranged for the door staff to open all the doors when the sound of the wind started and the cool air blew over the audience.

It's really great to see you experiencing the 70 music. This album has a great background story behind it and it is worth learning about. There's a good documentary on KZbin about the Wish you were here. Just subed cheers

It is totally heart-warming to see someone of your age appreciating this wonderful music, you have great taste! I was a teenager when this first came out and it was much underrated at the time, but Shine on ... has become an absolute classic! I wish I could hear it for the first time again and be as happy as you seem to be. However, it only gets better each time you hear it. Good luck with you musical journey.

IMO - At the end of 'Have A Cigar' the music goes from a full-blown wide open stereo sound down to a cheap radio with one speaker (or maybe a "transistor radio" with a single earpiece - yeah, some of us still had those in 1975 lol) ... Who can resist air guitar when Gilmore plays?!? lol

It's so intriguing to see the difference in how people experience music for the first time, where someone like me really tunes into the lyrics and others tune into the instrumentals more heavily. Both valid in every way. That's why I like listening several times. Discovering new things to love in my favorite music every time.

Hey Arianne, When the jam at the end of "Have a Cigar" changed most dramatically, what caused it was the use of something called a 'flanger'. It's a production device that alters the sound frequency during the studio recording. It's used to create a distinctive "swooshing" or "jet plane" sound.

Hello I just found you and your channel, your very endearing. I wish you all best. As far as your curiosity about the instrument I'm pretty sure it's a synthesizer adjusted to sound somewhat like a French Horn. Cheers!

@21:00 the instrument you've just heard is a slide guitar played by David Gilmour, just like he did on so many other tracks, for instance, Breathe in the Air and The Great Gig in the Sky (from Dark Side of the Moon) and One of These Days (from Meddle). Check out the live versions here on KZbin.

That's Roy Harper on that first Track Have a Cigar. And thing you said it's "noise cancelling" it's really like somebody is listening to the song on the radio and them playing the guitar along with it.

Merci beaucoup, c'était très agréable de vous voir réagir. I have been a Pink Floyd fan since the mid 80's and Wish you were here is my favourite album. My daughter is about your age and she has started to show interest in 70's music now. I've always wondered if it would be better to explain the story about this album before she listen to it or wait until she has heard it. Knowing that the entire album is a tribute to Syd Barrett might explain the composition and how all songs flow together. I've seen so many "reaction videos" on YT where people have only listen to the song Wish you were here or just the first 5 parts of Shine on You crazy Diamond (see how I capitalized S, Y and D...) and they just don't get it. I mean, they are all great songs but if you understand what the band wanted to portray it must be easier for the first time listener. Btw, I took French classes in school (year 7 to 12) and my first French teacher was a young French woman... Your French accent makes me think of her. :) I haven't used my French much though...
