This album is the third of eight albums which are, in my opinion, the greatest compositional output of any band in the history of rock. From "Fly By Night" through "Signals" Rush's musical innovations have never been equaled (even, to some degree, by them). I have loved all of their music over the more than four decades they performed and recorded together, but for me, the earliest eight albums after Neil joined the band were the best of what they created.

I can't see anyone else in the comments mention this but at the end it goes "Attention all planets of the solar federation" the line is sung/spoken 3 times. There are 7 words in the sentence, said 3 times makes of course 21. He then goes "We have assumed control" 3 times. 4 words said 3 times is 12. The ending is 2112! They were utter masters of their art! Amazing band.

Also, Alex Lifeson plays the most recognizable chord sequence from Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (set 300 years before the time of Rush's album) four times right at the end of the Overture in 2112, just before the *BOOM*, which is très slick 'cause I bet if you search your ear's memory, a smile will come to your face when you suddenly remember the cannon shots, REAL cannon shots, associated with said chords in Tchaikovsky's masterpiece. Cool, eh? 🤗 🇨🇦

The reason for all the changes at the start is that this an Overture. In classical music, the Overture introduces all of the themes that are going to be used in the rest of the piece. So that's what they are doing here. Rush is one of Canada's greatest exports.

It's great to see young people listening to Rush I remember listening to this album back in 1980 and it blew my mind, I had never heard anything like them before, not sure there has ever been a better three piece band in the whole of rock history, I genuinely believe that people will still be listening to Rush a century from now and still feel what millions before have felt. If Canada hadn't given the world anything except for Rush they would still be massively in credit.

I hope you continue to enjoy Rush, and I highly recommend you check out the video of them playing "YYZ" live in Rio. He gave it to me and also 2112. He said this was the album I really needed to hear. I played it. Then I played it again. I played it a third time, this time remembering to make a copy. I knew I needed to find everything they had recorded after that.

Firstly - awesome that you'd jump right in the deep end of Rush with this album. There's so much to appreciate from the Rush catalog. Their sound has changed over the years and it's one of the reasons they've been such an enduring band. I suggest a handful of songs - Xanadu, Cygnus X-1, Book 1 and 2, The Spirit of Radio and Natural Science, The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, Subdivisions, and Losing It. They should give you a great foundation from which to explore other aspects of the Rush catalog. I hope this album gives you cause to listen to the band outside of producing reaction videos. They are truly a treasure, and I have felt fortunate to have been along for the ride as a "fan" since the mid-80's. Regarding 2112 - I'd suggest reading the background on how the lyrics were crafted and the meaning of the song. It adds an entirely greater appreciation for how they created the arrangement - particularly the transition from "Temples of Syrinx" to "Discovery". As well, take a look into how the band was being challenged by its label at the time this album was created, as how much integrity the band showed at a time when their very existence was being challenged by their label because of their musical choices. Artistic integrity is a consistent theme in the lyrical content of their albums, particularly in their earlier work. If you watch their documentary "Time Stand Still" it will give you pretty good insight into the band. Well worth the time, IMHO... Lastly, I enjoy watching your reaction videos, along with other younger folks who are adventurous to listen to some of these progressive gems on KZbin. It's great to see younger people appreciate the musicianship and artistry of groups like Rush, Yes and similar progressive bands. It gives us older farts hope. Maybe music will prevail after all...

Respect for starting out with their masterpiece. The musicianship, the composition, the story, everything about 2112 (twenty one twelve) is absolute greatness. Neil Peart rightfully gets a lot of attention as one of the greatest drummers of all time, but all three of them are musical greats. Geddy is one of the finest bass players, plays a pretty mean keyboard/synth too, and back then his voice was fantastic and full of soul. Alex is absolutely one of my guitar heroes. Together they were greater than the sum of their parts. 2112 also has a lot of nostalgia for me. 40 something years ago I had this record, and me and my best friend listened to it over and over, until we knew every word, note, drum beat, nuance, and after a while every scratch and skip of the record by heart. If you're going to do Rush album reactions, A Farewell to Kings (do that one first) and Hemispheres are essential 70s Rush albums. Their self-titled debut is essential for their straight hard rock origins. . In the 80s, I think Permanent Waves is their best album by far. Moving Pictures was very popular and considered by some their pinnacle, but I disagree. It's not bad and has its highlights, but I was personally rather disappointed in that album compared to prior ones (and I was a Rush fanatic back in the day). After that album, I wasn't paying much attention anymore. They became a very different band, which isn't necessarily bad... it just wasn't "my" Rush anymore.

The year was 1980. I was working flipping burgers at Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor, and one of my coworkers sang with the Seattle Opera. We talked about this and that, and of course young people (I was 19) like to talk about music. He said he never listened to rock music, only classical, with one exception: Side 1 of Rush 2112. I knew my friend Mark was a Rush fan (He tried to convert me for years but I was a hard nut to crack.) Growing up a Rush fan and their music being the soundtrack of my teen age years, it's amazing to watch someone hear 2112 for the first time. What an absolute treat to hear it for the first time, remastered, on headphones, with Geddy's voice, arguably, at it's beaconing peak. There is something about seeing someone hearing it 35years later, who immediately gets it, that brings up a lot of emotion for me. Some kind of "macro validation" that transcends the personal and is understood by every person who has been moved by these 3 dudes and their tonal weave. It's timeless. Maybe because it took so long for them to "break through", it makes it all the more joyful to see them being carried on....like we are all related...harmonic relatives. Anyway, I enjoyed watching you enjoy that song.

This album pronounced.21 / 12 is about the world in 2112 after nuclear holocaust and each one of these sections it’s like a play with different acts…… it’s like reading words in a book but it’s music telling the story of this time….. during this period of music nobody was doing this type of concept…. I can’t say enough how when this came out, I was in eighth grade, and it completely blew us all away…… I look forward to part two and I love how you enjoy not only the guitar, but music as a whole

Hi Verdy. You are the best reactor I've found to just kick back, relax and either discover something new or rediscover something familiar. I like how you hear things that I don't necessarily listen for. And I didn't know YOU are Canadien. I imagined you were coming from France. Anyway this Rush album side is new to me too. Of course, I'm familiar with their top airplay hits, which I mostly like. I didn't like this side as much as you. I didn't hate it, but it didn't really grab me.

You are very brave to dive into 2112 as your first Rush reaction - welcome to a very deep rabbit hole! You picked out some good points in the songs so far, so I have high hopes for your future Rush experience!

This was basically their response to record execs who were threatening to drop them after their third album if they didn't come up with more short "radio-friendly" songs; they decided that if they were going to crash and burn, they may as well do it in grand style, so they came out with this album, whose success gave them the freedom to chart their own musical course. And now, for 30 minutes that will completely blow your mind, I recommend Cygnus X-1, Books 1 and 2. 🎤 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

I’m so jealous of the journey you have embarked on. I discovered Rush in 1979 when I was 12.. you have soooo much amazing music to listen to by this Canadian trio. I’m sorry that you can’t experience them live.

Rush's Moving Pictures & Exit Stage Left are the next Rush albums you need to do. Nothing but top tier tracks on both. Rush is one of Canada's national treasures, pretty shocked youve never heard of them if you are up North.

This is the first song I heard from the greatest band on planet earth! It was about 1977 or 78...on 8 track! Found in a stoner friend's case one summer and changed my life and been a lifelong fan since I was 12 years old!

Only found your channel a month or sop ago- when you reacted to Led Zepp ONE. I've been excitedly awaiting you diving into your countrymen and this particular album since then. Such a natural fit for you and your channel. This was GREAT. Can't wait for you to listen to the rest.

The chopping you mention are called chokes. As in choking the cymbal. So great seeing people discover Rush. I hope you do more, there's 40 years of music to discover from 3 musical geniuses. Cheers from Toronto.
