I am looking at a very similar setup and wanted to know what the noise is like with this Nas, would it work beside my desk it what I am asking?

Its mostly silent, but its not completely discreet. I have it directly on my desk for review purposes and the infrequent purr is notable if not slightly distracting at random intervals. Its not unbearable or overly distracting but I would definitely recommend keeping it at a respectable distance if you require silence for recording / sanctity.

I see that the internal PSU has a fan. Does it produce a high-pitched noise? By the way, I have the same SoundBlaster!

The fan is discreet or otherwise undetectable in a typical environment. You have to be right up to the rear of the unit to hear anything. And I love my X5. Did you have any occasional noise corruption on your speaker/headphone outputs? I've had to reboot my unit from time to time to clear some occasional pops / jitters.

​@@ArcheagusYes, during my first few days, I noticed some clicking and noise artifacts at certain bitrates. I set it to direct mode at 32-bit/384 (and maybe something else), and I haven't heard any problems since (I use it with headphones only and rarely turn off my PC). Thanks!
